Is it just me, or are the majority of people who have a lot ( I consider 200+ a lot) of DVDs big horror buffs?

Many from my family think I'm a little too obsessed with my collection. It's all I ask for come Christmas and my birthday and any little biot of extra cash I might have, goes for purchasing more of the discs I want. A good portion of my collection is made up of classic sci-fi and horror, but there's overall, a very eclectic mix of films, I think.
My friends like to look at the collection and laugh at the various titles. My collcetion is sitting at just under 800 titles and I can say that all titles/discs are wanted and loved.

I know that I spend too much money on my collection, which is about in the 1,000 range. As most of you have said, I get the usual shock and awe and "What the hell are these movie?" because I don't have all the usual fare. I also get the "Wow, you have your own Blockbuster." To which I am quick to point out that you couldn't find at Blockbuster many of the titles I have.
I don't think I could ever downsize my collection, but I just recently moved and that is the point that you truly get a glimpse of how many DVDs you have. It took me longer to pack and unpack my DVDs than anything else. In fact, if you pointed at a box when I first moved, the chances were very good that it would be filled with DVDs. That was the first moment that I began to think that maybe I had gone a little too far. But as another poster said, I just love film.
As for the lending question, I only lend on rare occassions to very close friends and family (and even then it sometimes depends on the title). I don't like having my collection too spread out.

Can I borrow a movie, then keep it so long you have to call and ask for it back, and we're not quite sure where it is, are you sure we didn't already return it?

Don't get many visitors this far out in the boondocks but my occasional houseguests seem to appreciate the chance to watch movies on my HT setup when they come visit (some have DVD players but none have anything resembling a home theater). Don't recall ever getting a comment about my collection though. All my friends and family know that DVDs are a hobby of mine and accept it as harmless, I suppose.

Over 700, and probably half are horrors.
I do not get anyone saying anything other than it is Tuesday. He probably has already picked up so and so movie. Which is true 9 times out of 10.

I would say some are curious as to why I would have so many movies, others envious to a certain degree, some excited that there're possibilities for free rentals and others are quite concerned that I would have some many movies (would I ever have the time to watch them all).
My response to all the different looks and voiced opinions, I love movies! I truly don't care what opinion there is out there on my collection, I'm just thrilled that I've been able to indulge in such a hobby.

I'm approaching 700 and about half are horrors.
People see and say "You've got a lot of stuff I've never heard of." "I wouldn't be spending my money on those sort of movies." "You could open a rental store." "How much did all of these cost you?" "Jeez, do you have enough DVDs yet?" "Have you watched all of these?" "That's quite a DVD collection you've got."

no new people come over to my place so I dont get the jaw drops much anymore.
but when a new face does show up, my collection does not usually impress them as I have them stuffed in 4 400 disk sony players. ITs very descreet. All I have that is visable are 5 binders listed Anime, TV, Action/Drama, SciFi/Comedy, and Other.
People always say what are the binders for.
I have to explain it is a list of the movies I have avaiable to watch. You pick what you want to watch and type in the # and the disk plays. That does impress people still.

FWIW, I think that movies sitting on a shelf unviewed are useless and a big waste of money. That said, I have more movies sitting on shelves than anyone I know except one other person, to whom I am slowly but surely catching up to. He turned me on to sharing and now we both bring recent acquisitions in to work and loan them out to anyone working in the same office as well as taking special requests from the "stacks" at home.
After over a year of lending like this, between the two of us, we've probably made over 1500+ loans and so far only had 2 discs get permanently lost and the borrowers were both quite apologetic and paid up right away. There have been a couple of discs that also got noticeably scratched at some point, but since the most popular titles are all ones I've picked up used from rental stores it hasn't bothered me very much.
I do have to say that it is a little bit depressing that very few people are interested in foreign titles or anything too far out of the mainstream. I'll work real hard to "sell" something only mildly off the beaten track, like "So Close" only to have them decide to stick with, "Charlie's Angels 2" or something clearly inferior. I figure, it's free, what do they have to lose? 15-30 minutes of their time to decide if they really can't stand it. Oh well...

Nobody sees my collection.
Nobody comes to my place.
I don't have any friends.
My cat walks by and sniffs at them occasionally, on her way to go poop.

My dvd collection consists of 275 movies and 29 tv shows sets. the few people who see my collection are impressed and sometimes want to borrow. Most of my things are mainstream movies.
I either upgrade to from vhs such as disney titles or recent movies I have seen at the theatres. I usually work at a movie theatre so I go there for free.
On the horror issue I have maybe 5 depending. the 3 Scream movies i consider comedy since i laugh at them. I have final dedistation and signs. Its not a genre am into, I also not into sci-fi.
My cousin just started wanting dvds so I gave her some I had doubles of like doubledipped titles. She says she has 20 so I brag about my collection to her. She claims not to care.

Ive got about 250. Im pretty picky about the movies I buy, and im ultra cheap, unless i get a deal, i dont buy. I wont pay more than $10 a disc, and I think outside of some criterions, and a few anime I have done that. Ive managed to get some real good stuff and still hold to my $10 limit, ive cleaned out CH, got in on the early overstock runs etc.
I figure my collection will top our somewhere around 350, the number or movies i want and actively seek is low now.
Most people think I have too many and spent too much money. I have probably 50 unopened and peeps shake their head like im wasting money. I watch movies while I do my excersizing, i watch all the special features, commentaries etc. I probabaly go through 2 or 3 a week. People just dont understand a love of film.
I rarely lend, and even then, it better be a close friend, and they get the lecture that i better get it back. Casual friends never. Casual friends treat low cost items borrowed casually.
When i have people over to watch a movie, it funny, i usually have to pick something out. 250 isnt a lot compared to people here, but its a lot sitting on a wall, peoples eyes just tend to gloss over and they cant focus on picking a movie.
I also get a lot of laughs that I have my movies in alphabetical order, like its anal or something. I just dont get it.

I have over 250 and only a handful are horror. I sold off over 100 discs. Most of the time people say "it is a cool collection" and "wow you have alot of movies". Most are surprised they are alphabetized.

I have about 650 titles now and most people are shocked to see the collection. I keep them separated in three categories in alphabetical order (television, films, and music/sports/misc.)

My film collection isn't that large (about 120 releases), but my TV collection is huge (about 60 releases)... add that to my DVD-R's people usually ask how I have time to go to school.

And like everyone else, I get the combo of "Why do you waste your money on that?" and "Can I borrow some?"
