I just picked up Ken Burns "The Civil War" for a little over $50 at DVD SOON (I have their fidelity card). Best price I've ever seen for this.

Now that DDD's 20% sale is on, I was eyeing the Ric Burns' documentary on New York. Does anyone know how you can determine whether the copies they have on hand are the ones that have been repackaged in the ultra thin cases, vs. the huge box of regular-sized keep cases? Many thanks in advance.

I don't think you can (the UPC didn't change). But, I would be surprised if you got the huge box. They made the switch to thinpaks quite a while ago and I suspect that most of the larger online retailers have already exhausted their old stock. But, it is definitely a (small) gamble.

FWIW, I bought the set in the last DDD sale (6 mos. ago) and got the regular size case version. Maybe six months has depleted their stock... but it sadly hadn't at that time.

Good luck!

I got the civil war series for about 50 bucks at Best Buy but that was employee cost.

I asked this question last June during a DDD 20% off sale, so I thought I'd ask it again: has anyone recently bought the Ric Burns' documentary on New York from DDD, and can you confirm whether it is the smaller packaging? It appears like it might be, but thought I'd check with all of you first. That really is a deciding factor in my decision. Thanks!

The packaging change occurred over 2 years ago. I think the odds of getting the larger (keepcase) set from DDD is pretty much zero. It'll be the smaller thinpak packaging, with the bonus disc.

I'm finally going to get the New York set -- for $67.20 via the DDD sale, which I think is a bargain. (Especially considering Amazon is selling it for $120.99 and their marketplace prices for used/new begin at $94.99.)

Me too. I've been wanting that for a few years now, but can never justify the high price tag.

I've only seen the Jazz one, but based on that he should stick to subjects he knows something about. It was pretty embarrassing. The worst part is people who don't know much about the subject themselves actually think that it's a good and authoritative look at the subject.

Really? I myself know very little about jazz, but I did enjoy the "Jazz" series.

FWIW, both "Jazz" and "Baseball" can now be had for $86.xx each during the DDD sale.

86 bucks is still to steep for me...

its good, but even for as many disc as it is, its been out forever (and never had a price break) It also airs on tv at least every other year, so i let that tide me over.

I've never seen "Jazz" so I can't weigh in on that, but both "The Civil War" and "Baseball" are excellent.

It would be nice if they remastered Civil War. The whole set suffers from a jittery picture.
