Clearing out your old titles... thoughts?

I got rid of about a half dozen, but kind of regretted it afterwards (mostly due to not getting what they were worth).
Most of the ones I want to get rid of now are pretty worthless (example: a Full Screen, Blockbuster previously viewed (with sticker on disk) American Pie 2) so unless there's some kind of good trade-in offer, I'll just keep them. Right now, I still have room for another 100 or so DVDs--when I get to that point (probably 2 years at current purchase rates), I may start weeding out.

I am in the process of weeding my collection, but unforunately a computer hard drive crash destroyed the list. I should be getting it done in a few weeks. Around 350 titles to begin with and more later.
I mainly selecting doubles and titles that I got by mistake. After that I will be selecting a few things that I dislike.

I sell regularly on half.com
Within the last year, I've moved about 250 discs for over $2300.
My collection, which at one time was over 1000 discs, is now down to a much more manageable 450.
Whereas I would routinely buy 4-5 DVDs per week, I now buy only 2-3 DVDs per month.

Man, this post was made for me!
I’m all about a constantly fluxing DVD collection. Most of the time I buy DVDs knowing they’ll stay in my collection forever. Still, sometimes they aren’t as good as I remember, other times I test films out, and if they aren’t that good for me or my wife, I’ll sell them later. I also sell DVDs that have been or will be re-released in improved editions (hence I have even sold Criterions—The Silence of the Lambs [at a nice profit, mind you]). DVD Aficionado is the best place for me to keep things organized.
When I buy them, and I’m not sure I’ll keep them, I’ll place them in a “limbo” folder. These titles are DVDs that I might sell. I have to either still watch them or watch them again to make a final decision. You can see it here:
http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...o&id=slowcloud (man, there are a lot here now, as I have been doing much more buying than viewing)
Then I have my “For Sale” folder of titles I have for sale (I use eBay, Half and Amazon):
http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...m&id=slowcloud (not many here right now, as I have some catching up on viewing to do, and when I sell DVDs they normally do sell fast)
I even make good use of DVD Aficionado’s “Have Seen” folder, keeping track of the films I once owned but have sold, which is a sub folder in “Have Seen” titled “Have Seen/Sold.” I think there are many great films out there, but they aren’t all worth keeping and re-watching for me, like super heavy movies such as Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark, so I like to think of lots of these as an extension of my collection, which I do hold dear in some way (but space and economy overrule sentiment). Check out my “have seen” folder here:
http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...d&id=slowcloud
Finally, I make careful decisions on what films are worth buying at all. Hence, I never seem to loose money on the DVDs I sell. Popular titles are the worst investments (especially most previously viewed items at DVD rental shops). If I didn’t see them in the theater, I’ll borrow those from a friend, who seems to buy almost every new release on those infamous Tuesdays. If I want to watch a rare title he doesn’t have, I’ll rent those, or, for the most part, skip them all together. I even keep a DVD “To Rent” wishlist on DVD Aficionado:

I have sold dvds usually on ebay since I'll put a bunch of things up at the same time like a set of books so I get more exposure by telling people to check out my other auctions for comebined shipping. Gave some duplicate movies I had upgraded versions off to a cousin trying to build a collection. Other then upgrades or dupilcates I have'd parted with anything yet of my collection of about 300 movies and 30 tv sets.

I've just joined netflix (and I mean I just joined tonight) to resolve this problem.
There's two sides to my issue:
1. I hate renting from stores, therefore I buy which of cousre leads to a lot of blind purchases that end up horrible.
2. I always tell myself that I want the biggest library of DVD's ever but I never stick to it - never
So, Netflix is the answer for me - plain and simple, I'll rent and if I like I'll buy.

Ive slowly get rid of some of my titles.
Mainly, they are ones that I double dipped, but some are older titles from before Blockbuster rented DVDs. Back then, if you wanted to watch a movie on DVD, you had to buy it!
I usually use ebay, half price books or just give them away to family or friends.

Unless it's something that I bought blind and then considered absolutely horrible (read: "feardotcom"), I'll hang on to it. I like having a large amount of DVD's to pick from at any given time. Even if a movie is mostly weak, I'll often find myself wanting to see it again either for nostalgia or one specific scene.

Wherehouse.com will tell you exactly how much they will pay for a DVD based on UPC code or title. This is the amount you would make by sending them in or walking them into a store should you still have one in your neighborhood. Average is about $6 for more mainstream titles.
I walked in with my big bag of DVDs and walked out 20 minutes later with cash in hand.

Interesting topic, sorry if I keep rambling, lol. I cant remember what year I got into dvd but it was pretty early. (the players were offered w/ like 5 movies, and the only $10 movies you could get were like 'Frantic', etc) Anyway, because of this I picked up some crappy movies just because they were cheaper, I got a lot of titles through Columbia House, Bigstar.com, dvdexpress.com, and was it reel.com? (w/ coupons) This site has been a big part of getting great deals (some on titles I wouldn't have gotten otherwise as well) Anyway, I had had a large vhs collection which I quickly sold and phased out. I just love movies, as most of us here do.
I never sold any dvds for a very long time....my collection grew and grew, and I loved 'em, lol. (I'm extremely anal in keeping them organized, having a series, spines lined up, etc...its pretty O.C.D.) Then I started selling through half and to secondspin.com and just realized I have been hovering between 600-615 for about the past year. So obviously I have been circulating through titles alot. I wish I would have kept a list of the movies that I had and sold just out of curiosity. I'm looking at my collection differently lately in that after adding so many shelves to my room I evaluate them differently.
I do alot of blind buys, but am cutting down. I think my problem is that I like almost any movie- I can always find something I like about a movie and a reason to keep it. So I dont really get burnt on blind buys very often. So lately I've been more particular, trying to not just buy movies new releases & wal-mart bin- because they're cheap. I've been keeping a list of the new movies I want and keep it updated and wait for sales like the movie gallery buy 2 get 2 sale. I rushed out and bought the Passion, and then saw it PV 2 weeks later at movie gallery and I hadnt watched it yet.....(coulda saved some $ & kinda need cash to pay on credit card as well So it was a big step for me lately (i know this is bad) but I had bought the Mangler 2 to go w/ my Stephen King collection (please dont yell at me - and I just sold it, lol. I wasn't that impressed w/ hellboy-so I sold it. I'm trying to be more strict in what I keep in my sacred collection. I think if I say that I wont make any more shelves that might help me. I've gotten into gaming so that kinda helps, but I can see myself loading up on games and not getting rid of them as well. I think another thing to help me might be that I'll be graduating college here this year, and need to realize the reality of things....
Also, I NEVER rent. I figure why pay BB like $5 when I can buy it for 7-15 usually? (CH, rebates, etc) I realize this isnt the best thinking and as sono as I get through my blind buy 'to watch' pile I think it will do me good to join Netflix which recieves good comments from most of you.
Yeah there should be a Dvdaholics or something.
I'll get around to posting pics of my collection sometime soon.
Thanks for listening to my rant!, lol

I was buying just about every DVD I thought I wanted. After filling up my DVD shelf I knew if was the wrong thing to do. The DVD shelf was more quantity than quality. I recently sold a bunch of DVDs I didn't like and I'm working on improving the quality of my DVD shelf.
