I have physical space for 700 DVDs. When I hit that magic number, I go through my list and gather up 50 to sell/donate. I just did this for the third time last week. Sold 48 titles for $355 at Wherehouse.

What's wherehouse? Oh and is it unanimous that the best place to get rid of dvds online is eBay or half?

Spun seems to just pay a fraction, any help would be nice, coz I'm about to weed out my collection to a much leaner size.

Wherehouse.com will tell you exactly how much they will pay for a DVD based on UPC code or title. This is the amount you would make by sending them in or walking them into a store should you still have one in your neighborhood. Average is about $6 for more mainstream titles.

They certainly pay more than SPUN.

Since I have become a new christian, I have been selling a lot of my horror DVDs, and many others titles, which I think would be inappropriate for me to view now, according to my new growing relationship with God. Especially the movies that deals with the occult, or demonic themes.

Well, this is one way to reduce the size of your collection. Might not be for everyone, of course...

Are you getting the full amount of cash for your DVDs that the Wherehouse website is showing? The one I go to pays about 75% of the listed price in cash. If you want store credit they'll give you 100% of what the website says. So for me, the Wherehouse pays way too low. I usually take them to SecondSpin or another local place.

I almost never get rid of anything (except for upgrades, and even the original ones are still in the closet). Many years ago when I was rabidly buying records and CDs, I kept selling the CDs I felt I didn't want any more and could use some trade-in cash for, and NOW I find myself re-buying some of those CDs because I missed having them. I'd rather just hold on to the things in the first place.

I sold about 600 of my discs...becaue I realized that I just didnt need that many discs...I sold it off in small doses over the course of a few months...about 30 at a time and a couple of times sold 60...Im much happier now...

Yeah, I pretty much run a cycle of buying, trading or selling off what I didn't love and/or feel the need to ever see again... I haven't rented a DVD in three years, I prefer to buy em' and move em'. Thankfully, I've been able to keep my DVD count under 300-ish, which is pretty much all the space that I have to store em'. I figure that I've sold or traded at least 1/2 of all the DVDs that I've owned.

Once I buy a disc, it's there for posterity. I only get rid of discs when I upgrade to a newer version, in which case my brother gets them.

I, personally, would rather have TV sets then single movies. And I make sure those movies are in my words, awesome enough to warrant many watches. Its a size issue with me. With about 300 dvds and like 12 TV sets and numerous box sets I need space. I'll mostly likely go through them soon again.
Some movies I do really like, but it pisses me off that cable, or HBO, or whatever always shows most of them, so I'll keep my horror and exploitation titles and watch the others on TV.
I mean why have Austin Powers or Matrix when TNT shows them like a million times?

I need to rid myself of some...any suggestions?

I'm starting college in the fall and am desperate to make some extra cash...at this point, I'm ready to sell up to 250 of my 350 or so DVDs, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't want to ship that many to an online trade-in store, and Newbury Comics and FYE don't seem to want to give me anything but store credit (or 80% of the $3 they tell me the movie's worth). Should I just throw them all on e-bay? Do you have any other methods that you'd recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ebay is good, but timely. I just unloaded 31 titles to dvdempire.com's site. Yes, you can get store credit or even better for you, they have direct deposit to your checking or whatnot. Recommended and easy (sorry to sound like a spokesperson, I'm not, I just think they are good).

I have 118 movies in my collection right now. I've sold off 27 DVDs. Out of the 27, I've upgraded two movies: Casablanca and Unforgiven. Warner Brothers does a great job with those 2-disc special editions.

I get rid of stuff that I won't ever watch again. No point cluttering yourself with things you'll never use - that's just hoarding junk.

Several They were films that I just wouldn't watch again.

i have well over 900 now.
i have a box of about 40 or so that i have been planning on selling for awhile now.
including all the first release star trek movies,
just never get around to it.

my collection is only a little over 200, but I haven't much yet. I've only sold 1 thing to date, sold the full screen Red Dragon DVD I bought on accident at one of Circuit City's sales, that's about it.

Have a going to school sale in the trade forum. I have seen people sell things off individually or those really hurting, sell entire collections. Priced right and with a little story asking for help, the trade forum will sell fast. I have been on both ends, buying and selling. In general I would prefer to sell all mine this way, but sometimes there are titles too many dvdtalkers are trying to get rid of.

I keep all the movies I have. I have sold a couple of movies before and then regretted it later on. I just try and make sure I buy movies I want to keep. Its working so far.

Because they're edited, full of commercials and not in widescreen.

I may try get rid of Predator and Goodfellas since the SE's are coming out. Ive never double dipped before but am tempted with these titles.

A couple of times a year, I put together "film school collections" on eBay.

There are usually 6-7 titles in the package, and I list them with descriptions about the movies, and how you can learn more from watching them than you would "from an entire semester at my alma-mater NYU"

Granted, I don't mention that I went to the business school (although I did take quite a few film classes as electives.)

I include pictures and hype up the quality of the films a little bit (after all, it's based solely on opinion) and they typically sell for what I expect, if not a little bit more.
