ok, one week to go! Who got them early? I can't wait, a couple times in the past Best Buy has put out Doctor Who DVD's a week early, so I might stop by to check tommorrow.

HEADS UP!! - Doctor Who VHS Sale!!

Amazon.com is selling a bunch of thier Doctor Who VHS videos for $4.95 each!! Including some double tape sets like War Games and Visitation/Black Orchid, and alot of single tape classics like Time Meddler, War Machines, Frontier in Space, Planet of the Daleks, Colony in Space and many more. lots of Pertwee and Davison!

Remember they are only releasing about 8 Doctor Who DVD's a year and with over 150 stories to release, if you want to see some of these stories, you should pick these up before they sell out because it might be a long time before they come out on DVD.

Wow. $4.95 for some double tape sets. I remember shelling out close to 30 for some of them before I found my friends at Suncoast way back.

Earlier this year, I sold off nearly all my Who videos on the Gallifrey Forums ($5 for single tapes, $10 for doubles). I sold a chunk of them before some guys in Chicago (it was Chicago, right? Can't remember now) pooled their money together and bought out everything I had left. I ended up with a little over 220 bucks in my pocket after that venture.

I kept some of the stuff I thought wouldn't creep up on DVD (Shada, the original version of the Five Doctors, etc). I also kept the Early Years videos (Daleks & Cybermen) and the Hartnell & Troughton Years tapes thinking all those missing episodes would never show up on DVD.

Whoops!

I also have all my BBV videos too. For some reason, I just couldn't part with my Stranger vids. Weird.

the original version of the Five Doctors, etc
Sorry if I sound like a newbie, but what is different about The Five Doctors on DVD?

El-Kabong 08-31-04 01:54 PM

The Special Edition includes some small scenes here and there that were cut for time, some new special effects (to the Time Scool effect, mostly), and footage from Shada of the 4th Doctor going back that matches up with when he was Time Scooped. That's about it, if I remember correctly.

Cool, but not that earth-shattering. Still, I'm keeping my Laserdisc of the non-SE version, too.

turborobb 08-31-04 06:21 PM

the original Five Doctors isn't THAT much different, the "special Edition" has some "improved" special effects and some extended scenes... mostly extra scenes of people walking around in hallways. To tell the truth, when I first saw the Five Doctors Special Edition, I didn't notice anything different, I had to look up online what was changed.

oh and to correct myself above... Planet of the Daleks and Frontier in Space are double tape sets too!

Do you think they'll ever release all the work by any one doctor as a set?

That would be really great!

Those would be some pretty big sets.....well, at least Tom's would be huge.

Colin and Sylvester's could be a decent set with all their stories. Troughton would be a small set only because most of his stories don't exist (tho The War Games would add a lot episode-wise).

McGann's would be an itsy-bitsy set. In fact, it's already out!

Yeah, I know they'd be huge. And it's Tom's set that I want the most!

Still, I wish it would happen. I'd love to have every episode Tom ever did on DVD. I just can't afford them as single episodes unfortunately...

El-Kabong 08-31-04 09:55 PM

Well they do come out slow enough that getting the single releases isnt that big of a strain on the pocket book. That or wait for DDD's %20 off Christmas sale.

What are DDDs?

Thanks for the info.

El-Kabong 08-31-04 11:48 PM

Deep Discount DVD - an online store with probably the lowest price around. About twice a year they have a series of coupons that knock 20% off their price. And the folks on the forum go apeshit and spend thousands of dollars.

Last year they had a sale in early december. They had one just a little while ago around May. There's no confirmation one way or another, but forum folks speculate that there will be one sometime towards the end of the year.

The Valeyard 09-01-04 01:16 AM

DDD is a great source for affordable Who DVDs. Another route is Amazon's Share the Love (which is how I pre-ordered Pyramids & Earthshock next week). Each title rounds out around 17 bucks.

If I have the money, I'll buy the titles as soon as they come out. If I'm short, I'll wait a bit.

Come to think of it, I still haven't finished Seeds of Death yet. I need to finish that one up before next week.

Welcome aboard, Whoster69!!

OK, thanks for the info everyone. I've bought stuff from Deep Discount DvD but didn't realize this was DDD (too tired I guess to think straight).

Glad to be here and get info about Doctor Who!

smokedragon 09-02-04 02:53 AM

I'm confused. I ordered this from Digital Eyes.

http://www.digitaleyes.net/Details.c...info=BBC020230

It states Doctor Who - Pyramids of Mars/Earthshock. Are these on the same DVD? Is it a mistake? Maybe they are seperate DVD's?

I want Earthshock. Pyramids I am ho-hum about, but my favorite Doctor Who villians are Cybermen. Can anyone sort this out because I received a shipping notice and I would like to know if Digital Eyes has the DVD listed correctly.

Thanks.

From the description, it looks like it is supposed to be a two-pack, and the two titles are supposedly being sold separately as well. But I don't see either title listed separately on their site. So if you ordered this, you might end up receiving both -- at a discount of almost 64% off!

But given that this same description appears on the individual titles at DDD, my guess is that you would only receive Earthshock (the title pictured).

this is how Earthshock is listed on Overstock.com, too. Can't find "Pyramids" listed separately as a DVD. They have "Earthshock/Pyramids" VHS also listed, which I know is a mis-print. That's probably really the Pyramids DVD by itself.

I pre-ordered the "Earthshock/Pyramids" from them. If I only get Earthshock, I won't be too disappointed, as I'm positive it's just a typo, but if they do decide to honor their mistake and send me both, I'll be pleasantly surprised (worth a gamble. Who knows, maybe they'll honor their mistake like Tower Records did when they listed Talons and Dalek Invasion of Earth for what appeared to be wholesale price).

All of that list can be found in stock at whona.com except

1st Doctor
The Crusade / The Space Museum (video / CD set)
3rd Doctor
The Monster of Peladon
5th Doctor
Planet of Fire
6th Doctor
The Mark of the Rani
Timelash

The Crusade/The Space Museum is still in stock at bbcamericashop.com , and Planet of Fire might still be available at tampoo.com.

Timelash and The Monster of Peladon have been gone for a while, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're up to $50 on eBay. Because of the low opinion of these two particular stories, it might be a long while before they come to DVD.

Just picked up my copies of Earthshock and Pyramids!!

Can't wait to get home to watch Earthshock!!

woohoo!!

El-Kabong 09-07-04 02:58 AM

A tidbit for you all - Outpost Gallifrey has some information about the DVD line in america. I wont post the whole thing here, I will include this snippit for you:

What does the future look like for Doctor Who releases on DVD in North America? Are there plans to continue into 2005 and beyond?

We plan to continue to roll out the classic series at a rate of two stories per quarter, and we hope to release the new series as soon as possible.

Keen.

turborobb 09-08-04 02:39 AM

my local Best Buy store had 4 copies each of both Earthshock and Pyramids of Mars at $20.99 each.

I've looked over the extras and they are excellent as always, the quality of the extras on these discs make the long wait completely worth it. I loved "Putting the Shock in Earthshock" and the "Did You See" TV show from 1982, those old vintage footage shows are so great to see. The easter egg on Earthshock is too funny. I watched the first episode of Mars... I had forgotten how good it was.

El-Kabong 09-08-04 03:13 AM

The commentary for Earthshock is pure gold. I loved the cast ripping on each other like that.

I thought the extras for Pyramids was pretty damn cool too - the one about the horror overtones that the series had was really well done. (and of course "I bring Sutek's gift of . . . milk" - great stuff!)

smokedragon 09-08-04 03:37 AM

Well, received my package from Digital Eyes. Pyramids of Mars was within. ARRRRRGGGGHHHHH! I was hoping to get Earthshock.Am I going to exchange Pyramids of Mars for Earthshock? Well, no. After all, it is Doctor Who, man.It is Doctor Who :D

Ordered Earthshock from Amazon. Hopefully will get it by the end of next week.

Anyway, can anyone tell me if there are any differences between the boxed set of the LOST IN TIME DVD's and the individual DVD's themselves. I mean it seems to be a helluva lot cheaper to get the boxed set.

Thanks.

El-Kabong 09-08-04 04:03 AM

Ah, thats easy.

The first set is a single disc with all of 1st Doctor's missing episodes (The Crusade 1&3, Dalek Master Plan 2, 5 and 10 and
The Celestial Toymaker, plus various clips)

Set two is a two disc set with all of the 2nd Doctor's missing episodes (The Underwater Menace, The Moonbase 2 and 4, The Faceless Ones 1 and 3 and Evil of the Daleks, plus clips).

Take all three discs, mush them together in one big box, knock off a couple of bucks from the MSRP and - Ta-dah: You have the entire Lost in Time collection!
