The One and Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (Version 6.0)

http://www.gallifreyone.com/graphics...nner090904.jpg
NOTE: To make this Thread more friendly and less daunting, all past Who releases are now thumbnail jpgs while the newer releases are regular sized. All title links go to the Restoration Forum so you can gander at the work they put into each release (when available).

I've had to create seperate Posts on this thread because it became harder to manage all the Images in one Post (plus, I wasn't allowed to).

First Post is the LATEST NEWS and UPCOMING RELEASES. Second Post is PREVIOUS RELEASES (in the smaller jpg images). Third Post is the BBC Releases for Region 2 (not yet available for Region 1) and the Spin-Off DVDs (such as the BBV DVDs of The Stranger and The Airzone Solution and the latest Reeltime DVDs such as Mindgame. Each is Who-related in someway). Third Post also has the Who Links that's usually at the very end of my Posts.

Hopefully everyone can stick ALL Doctor Who-related queries to this Thread instead of backing away from it in fear because of the size. Thanks to everyone who suggested the upgrade/downgrade.

OK, here's my problem.

Every time we get a new OFFICIAL DOCTOR WHO thread, I don't get notified of it via e-mail. I'm subscribed to the official thread, so I get notified any time there are any updates, then suddenly, there's a new thread, and I don't know about it unless I happen to come strolling in here looking for the ****ing thing. What would be perfect is if, before starting the new thread, you just add a post to the old thread letting everyone know about the new thread. But for all I know, you've done that, and I've accidentally deleted the e-mail. I don't know, I can't find the old thread! It looks like you've just deleted it. Is there anyway to automatically transfer the subscribers from one thread to the next?

Probably not but in future (or past), I'll leave a big ass Post leading everyone to the new thread.

We'll see where it goes from there.

Whola!

suggestion... for people kind of new to Doctor Who, why don't you put the Doctor and year next to the story title?

for example...
The Aztecs (1st Doctor, 1964)

otherwise looks great. :)

Can't wait to get Seeds of Death!

The Exister 02-18-04 08:47 AM

Love the new thread.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

How's that? Updated and the Misc Section now features the Region 2 releases not yet available for Region 1.

Service direct to you.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Looks great! awesome!

Only two more weeks until we get Seeds of Death! I can't wait, the 2nd Doctor is one of my favorite Doctors and I LOVE the Ice Warriors, plus Ive only seen this story once way back in the 80's and remember nothing about it. It will be like watching a new story for me. I'm thrilled to see this soon!

Chew 02-24-04 10:36 AM

Is there a site with reviews of the newest releases? (Seeds/Three)

I have a huge backlog of DVDs and finally started watching my Dr. Who discs (in order). :)

For a change of pace, I thought you might be intrested in looking at www.oh-mummy.com. The behind-the-scenes of the Pyramids of Mars easter egg-turned full blown extra.

Give http://www.androzani.com/dvd.shtml a try. It focuses on the story more than the DVD, but it might serve your purposes. That or try http://www.gallifreyone.com for more indepth reviews.

A question to those of you who have The Sontaran Experiment / The Genesis of the Daleks VHS tapes: How good is the transfer? At the risk of sounding like a Noob, if this is already commercially available on VHS, can't a port to DVD not be too far off? Just curious, because the Who restoration team is doing a stellar job on the DVDs but if it's already out there and looks decent enough, why wait to release arguably the most popular Doctor Who episode ever?

(I'm new to the Who DVD realm. After watching it as a kid decades ago, I've finally picked up my "starter" Doctor Who DVD, The Robots of Death. Needless to say, there will be more Who DVDs to come.)

turborobb 02-26-04 11:42 PM

I agree Genesis of the Daleks is just about the best Who story, I'm sure it will be on DVD sooner than later. the Key to Time stories got a basic release like you were talking about, but Im sure with Genesis the Resturation Team will want to do a full super edition.

glad you liked Robots of Death! next I would go for Talons, because it's the story that follows right after Robots, or try one of the 60's stories like Tomb of the Cybermen or Dalek Invasion of Earth!

The Valeyard 02-27-04 12:52 AM

I, for one, will be the first person in line to pick up a Genesis of the Daleks DVD.

And I second the Talons recommendation. Those 6 episodes whiz by.

Im watching every episode in order from the beginning for the 40th anniv. right now I'm listening to the audio for the lost Dalek's Masterplan Episode 4, I promised myself I won't cheat and watch them out of order, but I might have to cheat when Seeds comes out on DVD.

has anyone ever done the whole series in order? I find I like the character of Vicki alot more now and it was really sad when Ian and Barbara left.

During the 30th Anniversary, I watched every Who video that had been released at that time (No Big Finish back then and very few "Missing" Audios). I have fond memories of staying up until 3am watching The War Games in it's entirety.

I really enjoyed the team of The Doctor, Jamie & Zoe (in fact, my youngest daughter is named Zoe) and felt a swell of sadness when The War Games was finished.

Things were never really the same after Ian and Barbara left. The ever-evolving aspect of the show began at that moment.

As a teenager, I always thought it was weird that
Spoiler:
the three original companions left at the end of a Dalek story (Susan in The Dalek Invasion of Earth & Ian and Barbara in The Chase).

But then...I was pretty geeky back then.

El-Kabong 02-28-04 01:27 AM

I keep meaning to start the "26 year plan" someday - an episode a week where possible, with the novels filling in for the missing episodes. Of course I need to get cracking on this right away - if I keep putting it off, I'l;l be 70 by the time the Classic series is done!

But yeah, I have done the series in order once or twice. There were a couple of episodes I missed (didnt have them on tape), but was more or less right.

turborobb 02-28-04 02:45 AM

agghhh... I could never do one episode a week, it would take forever! I'm doing about one episode (sometimes two) a day and it's still taking a long time. In the 80's my local station played one episode every day at 6pm, so one a day seems right to me.

I know have every episode on either DVD, VHS or audio (for the lost episodes)

Scot1458 02-28-04 10:59 AM

question:

My favs are #2 and #3. I enjoy both of these Doctors the most.

How many complete (or almost complete) series will we see on DVD?

I know #2 didn't fair to well.

thanks.

If memory serves me correctly, there are only 6 complete second Doctor stories in the archives.

The third Doctor fares much better - all of his episodes exist in some kind of format (some only as black and white episodes, but at least they exist). The problem with some of those episodes are that they only exist as NTSC masters - when converting from PAL to NTSC and back to PAL again, the end result looks like crap. The Restoration Team has the technology to do the conversion, but at the moment it's too expensive to use.

All the 3rd Doctor episodes exists, but only about half of them are the original master copies many only exist as black and white film prints or poor quality copies of prints from Stations in Canada.

The 2nd Doctor, sadly, only 6 of his stories exist in full and 2 stories almost exist, but are missing 2 episodes out of 6 and 8, those are Ice Warriors and The Invasion, both have been released on video.

here's the 2nd Doctors stories...
SEASON 4
Power of the Daleks - 6 episodes, all missing
Highlanders - 4 episodes, all missing
Underwater Menace - 4 episodes, only episode 3 exists
Moonbase - 4 episodes, only episodes 2 and 4 exist
Marca Terror - 4 episodes, all missing
Faceless Ones - 6 episodes, only 1 and 3 exist
Evil of the Daleks - 7 episodes, only episode 2 exists
SEASON 5
Tomb of the Cybermen - 4 episodes, all complete (on DVD)
Abominable Snowmen - 6 episodes, only episode 2 exists
Ice Warriors - 6 episodes, episodes 1, 4, 5 and 6 exist (on VHS)
Enemy of the World - 6 episodes, only episode 3 exists
Web of Fear - 6 episodes, only episode 1 exists
Fury from the Deep - 6 episodes, all missing
Wheel in Space - 6 episodes, only episodes 3 and 6 exist
SEASON 6
Dominators - 5 episodes, all complete (on VHS)
Mind Robber - 5 episodes, all complete (on VHS)
Invasion - 8 episodes, episodes 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 exist (on VHS)
Krotons - 4 episodes, all complete (on VHS)
Seeds of Death - 6 episodes, all complete (on DVD)
Space Pirates - 6 episodes, only episode 2 exists
War Games - 10 episodes, all complete (on VHS)

it's such a shame, some of those stories like Abominable Snowmen, Fury from the Deep and many others are all time Doctor Who classics. Many of them have been released on audio CD however. all the lost episodes exist as audio recordings. I have a few of the missing episode audio CD's, they are great to listen to. I think you can get them on amazon.

Scot1458 02-29-04 01:10 PM

So basically 8 series survive for the most part for Doctor #2? That is too bad. My first one I saw of him was TOMB OF THE CYBERMEN, and I could'nt believe how good it was.

He did appear in 3 other shows though right? The two doctors, the three doctors, and the five doctors if my memory serves me right.

Here's my question: I'm likely to buy the NTSC R1 edition of these episodes, when they're released on DVD. Will they be PAL converted to NTSC converted to PAL converted to NTSC?

yes, the second Doctors era is the best. If you liked Tomb of the Cybermen and don't mind getting VHS, I really suggest the Ice Warriors Video & CD set, it's a fantastic story and comes with an bonus audio CD of the missing episodes 2 & 3. There's also a VHS called The Troughton Years which has 3 odd surviving episodes from lost stories and many rare clips from Doctor #2. It might be out of print now, but if you can find it, it's worth getting, I know some people are against buying VHS now days but this stuff won't be on DVD anytime soon, so if you want to see it, buy the VHS before it goes out of print.

He did appear in 3 other shows though right? The two doctors, the three doctors, and the five doctors if my memory serves me right.
yes, he was in all the multi-doctor stories.

thats a good question. I think thats why all the Doctor #3 stuff thats been released on DVD so far are ones from the original masters. I understand they are working on a technology that will convert it back with no picture lose.

Wow, June seems so far away, but I guess it isn't.

The new DVDs from march should be arriving to me shortly.

I think they need to step up production on these DVDs though... we need to catch up with the UK.

We're not that far off from the UK. There are only 4 releases that we don't have so far.

Pyramids of Mars
The Visitation
Earthshock
The TV Movie

And since it's VERY unlikely that the TV Movie will ever see a Region 1 release (from Producer Phillip Segal's own mouth), that leaves only 3.

With The Green Death scheduled for later this year in the UK, we'll probably have 2 releases in October and the other 2 either later in the year or early next year.

I'd hate to rush the releases and end up with something sub-par. The Restoration Team is doing a BEAUTIFUL job with each release and if I have to wait a little longer for each episode, so be it. I love the time and effort they put into the episodes and extras.

They are most likely to be "B&W Film" -> B&W D3 PAL Video Master + Colour overlayed and matched from crusty 30 year old PAL->NTSC Analogue conversion -> Colour D3 PAL Video Master -> Color NTSC Video Master.

The results should have high definition luma and lowish resolution chroma. As chroma is half the resoltion of luma on DVD anyway It shouldn't look all that bad.

I bought the new DVD's today, Three Doctors and Seeds of Death. I got Three Doctors at Best Buy, they had 5 copies of it, but they didn't have Seeds of Death, I checked two different Best Buy and for some reason they have it in thier computers that Seeds comes out March 30th. wierd. but Borders had Seeds, so I got it there.

I haven't watched the stories yet, but I looked at some of the extras and they are fantastic. I love the vintage interviews on the Three Doctors DVD. wonderful. the extras are worth the price of the disks alone.

Scot1458 03-03-04 07:37 PM

So I finally saw my first 1st doctor movie, Invasion of the Daleks.

I know they are old and vintage, but he has as much charcter as a 2 dollar bill. All he does is walk around being crabby and insulting and going "hhmmmmmm".

think that no more #1 doctors on my list.

Same at my Best Buy. 5 copies of Three Doctors and no Seeds. I was hoping to pick up Seeds but I'll wait until the 30th. I just got a $10 GC thanks to the Rewards Program and I still haven't watched The Aztecs!

William Hartnell doesn't really stand out as a memorable Doctor in this day and age. His biggest claim to fame seems to be the fact that he was the very first Doctor and that's pretty much it. He was at the end of his career when Doctor Who entered his life and towards the end of his run, it really showed.

However, there are a few Who stories that I thought Hartnell excelled beyond his usual performance. "The Romans" and "The War Machines" stand out as my favorite Hartnell stories. "The Time Meddler" is also good. I'm sure others will mention more.

I'd recommend "An Unearthly Child" and "The Daleks" only for historical viewing.

New Series Update:

Both Doctor Who Magazine #341 and an internal BBC magazine, Ariel, have announced the writers signed for the first season of the new Doctor Who series. Joining producer Russell T. Davies, who will pen 8 episodes himself, are:

* Mark Gatiss, best known as the writer and co-creator of "The League of Gentlemen" and the author of several Doctor Who stories including the novels "Last of the Gaderene," "St. Anthony's Fire," "The Roundheads" and "Nightshade" and the Big Finish audios "Phantasmagoria" and "Invaders from Mars," and who penned several of the P.R.o.B.e. videos for BBV

* Steven Moffat, the creator of BBC2's popular comedy series "Coupling" which won "Sitcom of the Year" at the British Comedy Awards, and whose previous Doctor Who credit was the teleplay for the Comic Relief special "The Curse of Fatal Death" with Rowan Atkinson, Julia Sawalha and Jonathan Pryce

* Paul Cornell, the popular writer whose work includes episodes of "Casualty," "Wavelength," "Doctors," "Children's Ward" and "Springhill," and whose Doctor Who works include such novels as "Happy Endings," "Love and War," "The Shadows of Avalon" and both the screenplay for and novelisation of BBCi's "The Scream of the Shalka"

* Rob Shearman, an acclaimed playwright and stage writer who has written Big Finish's most popular Doctor Who audio teleplays including "The Holy Terror," "The Chimes of Midnight," "Jubilee," "Scherzo" and "Deadline," and who was awarded Writer of the Year at 2003's Doctor Who Magazine awards in London in November

Producer Mal Young told Ariel, "I've never received so many requests from writers and actors to be involved in a drama series, as I have had for Doctor Who." Added producer Julie Gardner, "Finding writers for the new series of Doctor Who has been one of the best jobs I've ever had. The talent available was exceptional."

Davies himself noted that he believes that he has "the best people in the business now working on the best show. They'll be writing stories ranging across the whole of time and space. The Doctor and Rose already have the best allies on their journey - brilliant writers with brilliant scripts. It's an honour to work with these people who are so talented; they shouldn't be allowed to travel together!" Outpost Gallifrey has learned that one of these newly confirmed writers will pen two scripts for Davies; another unnamed participant decided to withdraw at an earlier time (solely due to schedule complications). All are said to be working off of "very basic" ideas - rather than full outlines, as has been reported elsewhere - from Davies, who will generate the major framework of the first series and is leaving the actual details to these experienced TV writers. Filming on the new series begins "in the spring."

If (and when) the new series is released on DVD, do you think they'll go the single story route or a full Season Set.

With the new series, I'd go with the later. But that's just me.

Andrew

Scorpio 03-03-04 09:22 PM

I can't wait to see a Hartnell episode, or even Troughton for that matter (outside of The Two, Three, Five Doctors episodes). Back in the day, my PBS started with Pertwee so I've never seen much of those two. I have not started getting these on DVD yet, but I shall. I've been getting in the mood again as I came across two boxes of VHS tapes that I have in the basement. When my PBS ran them, I taped each story in SP mode, one per tape. I saw them not in episodic format, but all edited together like the FOX VHS releases were done.

So last night, I opened one of the boxes and picked a random tape and started to watch. I actually didn't remember what happened in Delta and the Bannermen, so it was almost like it seeing it for the first time. :)

Are they continuing on with Paul McGann then? Why do I feel great trepidation for this?

They haven't announced Who the latest Doctor will be. Richard E. Grant was recently named the 9th Doctor in the BBCi Webcast of "The Scream of the Shalka."

Here's what's known thus far:

Doctor Who
Produced by BBC Wales for BBC1
Thirteen 45-minute episodes, broadcasting on Saturday evenings on BBC1 beginning in early 2005

Cast unknown; characters will consist of the Doctor and companion Rose Tyler, traveling in the TARDIS. Stories will be a mixture of Earth-based adventures and outer space/alien worlds.

Series writers:
Russell T. Davies
Paul Cornell
Robert Shearman
Steven Moffatt
Mark Gatiss

Confirmed production team includes Russell T. Davies, Mal Young, Julie Gardner; commissioned by Lorraine Heggessey, Controller of BBC1

Contenders for the role of the Doctor mentioned in the popular press include:

Bill Nighy (Underworld, Blow Dry, Still Crazy, FairyTale: A True Story, The Maitlands; film and theatre actor)

Eddie Izzard (Velvet Goldmine, Shadow of the Vampire; internationally known stand-up comic)

Alan Davies (Jonathan Creek, A Many Splintered Thing, Bob & Rose; television actor, comedian)

Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon, The 51st State, Dog Soldiers, Cold Feet; son of Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee)

Paul McGann (Doctor Who, Withnail and I, Hornblower, Alien3; played the Eighth Doctor in 1996 film, Big Finish audios)

Richard E. Grant (Withnail and I, Gosford Park, Posh Nosh, Bram Stoker's Dracula; played future Doctor in "Curse of Fatal Death" and Ninth Doctor in BBCi "Scream of the Shalka")

That's all so far! Since they begin production "in the spring," it's only a matter of time before the new Doctor is announced. Personally, I hope they stick with McGann but that's looking doubtful.

Thanks for the info. I'm way out of touch with what has been happening in the Who world for some time. I didn't even get to see the last four McCoy's as my PBS finally caught up with the BBC and there was nothing new to show at the time, and then Who disappeared from the station. I seriously hope they keep continuity with the show and pick up where they left off with McGann. If they don't, they better have a damn good explanation as to what happened. I'd hate to see a regeneration wasted for one story! He'll end up having to steal another cycle like the Master at this rate.

If (and when) the new series is released on DVD, do you think they'll go the single story route or a full Season Set.
I think it will depend on the format of the new series. If it's a bunch of single 45 minute episode stories, then a "season box set" will do. If it's a series of multi episode 90 minute plus stories (Like the old series was shown) then I would say single story DVD's are the way to go.... or they could release it like Farscape is on DVD with Volumes of 4 or 5 episodes on each release.

I can't wait to see a Hartnell episode, or even Troughton for that matter
like you I only saw Pertwee and up on my local PBS station, and a couple years ago I started getting back into Doctor Who after 10 years and watching the first two Doctors for the first time. I know they aren't for everyone being all old, slow and black and white, but I LOVED them. The 60's era of the show is now my favorite, I love the b-movie sci fi feel to them and the scary monsters, overall much better than Tom Bakers era IMO.

So last night, I opened one of the boxes and picked a random tape and started to watch. I actually didn't remember what happened in Delta and the Bannermen, so it was almost like it seeing it for the first time.
yikes! thats a strange one to pick at random, I know most fans think of Delta was one of Doctor Who's worse episodes.

Yeah, I'm like you. If McGann doesn't take on the job, then I feel the producers should just go get Sylvester again to do another regeneration scene and just pretend the TV movie doesn't exist, placing it in an "alternate universe" (like the two Peter Cushing films). It would be stupid to waste an entire regeneration on a single adventure (the Fox TVM).

Since the movie cannot be aired in syndicated reruns with the old series anyway, any potential new viewers of the old material wouldn't miss McGann anyway.

Personally, though, I do hope he sticks with it. He made a decent Doctor, even if the TV movie wasn't particularly great.
