Futher update from Outpost Gallifrey:
Update 17 Sep, 2045 GMT: Outpost Gallifrey has learned that The Claws of Axos will not be out in March, but is rather the third release of 2005, likely due in May. Of course it's unlikely that the purported April release in Australia would be out earlier than the UK version so that will likely be pushed back to later in the year. We'll keep you posted on what the March release will be when we have more information.

If any of you can recommend a Dalek storyline like The Dalek Invasion of Earth, which I'm unsure of if it's available on DVD, that'd be much appreciated.
there are only 2 other Dalek stories out on DVD at this point, Ressurection of the Daleks (5th Doctor, Peter Davison) and Rememberance of the Daleks (7th Doctor, Sylvester McCoy) out of those two Rememberance is the best, it's earthbound and kind of Pertwee-ish with the british soldiers fighting the Daleks but both are good average Doctor Who stories IMO.

Any recommendations of some top-notch stories with Tom will be most thankful.
Pyramids of Mars is excellent, the best Tom out on DVD for sure. Talons of Wang Chiang and Robots of Death are excellent as well. Anything from Tom's first 3 seasons is all-time classic Doctor Who, while his later stuff is a rather mixed bag of bad and silly stories with the few good stories... all my opinion, of course.

Until I get more used to the Tom Baker Doctor and since he feels awkward at the moment since I've seen so few storylines with him in it,
I envy you. Growing up my PBS station only aired the Tom Baker episodes, with 2 Davison eps thrown in. To me Tom Baker is the Sean Connery of 'Who', to use your James Bond reference.

yeah, my PBS station ran the Tom Baker stories so many times they got boring because I knew them so well. they showed Pertwee and the 80's Doctors once or twice each and never showed the black and white stuff. I think Tom Baker is the most popular Doctor in the states just because he was the one that was shown the most.

I wonder if new fans, when they look back at all the old Doctors on DVD, will they like Tom Baker as much as the old fans do? I believe the "favorite" doctor of new fans will be more spread out due to all the different Doctors being equally available on DVD.

As a fan of five months, I'd say Tom Baker still stands out, particularly if you like your Who with a bit of comic relief. I've seen every R1 DVD for Doctors 4-7 and 8's movie in R2, and Tom Baker is by far my favorite, though I'll gladly watch Davison, C. Baker or McGann. (The verdict's still out on McCoy.) Currently what I've seen of Doctors 1-3 has been restricted to DVD extras and "The Two/Three/Five Doctors" stories (though I do plan on seeing their other DVDs), but I doubt any of them will ultimately surpass Tom Baker in my estimation.

It wasn't just in the states. Tom continues to be the most popular doctor worldwide.

As to my own perspective on this, I've seen all the doctors except the movie one (and only a little of McCoy). Of the remaining doctors I probably saw 80 - 95% of their episodes. Tom is my favorite by a wide margin though I do like the others as well. Davison is probably my least favorite (though I'd have to think about this some more to be sure). What I liked about Tom was his playful curiosity and how he enjoyed paradox and absurdity.

I think Baker was the best Doctor - partly because he was (is) a genuine eccentric, and partly because of the high quality of the writing/production staff during his tenure.

The only Doctor I never really cared for was Colin Baker - not his fault, really - he just jumped on board when the show started free-falling.

My favorite used to be Pertwee, but I've grown to love them all, especially Troughton (my current favorite).

I'd forgotten about Coin Baker. I'd agree with your assessment of him...

Colin was hamstrung by bad scripts, bad directing and a bad costume. Go listen to his Big Finish audios, to see (um, hear) exactly how his Doctor would have been out from under the JNT regime. He is absolutely marvelous!

Go listen to The One Doctor, Doctor Who and the Pirates or Jubilee - your opinion of his Doctor will completely turn around.

1. Wasn't Colin Baker in that whole Doctor Who Trial story arc as well... I remember it having some twists, but it certainly didn't follow the flow of the previous doctors...

2. Daleks: Invasion 2150 A.D. - I think there were some episodes I far preferred from the Doctor Who television series featuring these guys - but in all honesty I'd seen this as a kid and couldn't put a finger on some of the images that stayed with me for years, that is until the DVDs were put out a couple of years ago... yay DVD? ...anyways, I liked Cushing as the Doctor, I just had a harder time swallowing the difference in the character and the background story is all - it was a little like Never Say Never Again to me, it was a good flick, but kinda like "Never Say Never Again" with the unofficiality to it and all...

Without a doubt, I would LOVE a Trial Box Set!

Colin Baker - he's my favorite Doctor! too bad he didn't get a chance to do more stories. I thought Season 22 with Colin was on average much better than Peter Davisons time on the show.

Daleks: Invasion 2150 A.D. - Peter Cushing wasn't an offical Doctor. Daleks: Invasion 2150 A.D. was a movie remake of the TV story The Dalek Invasion of Earth with William Hartnell as the first Doctor. I've seen both versions and I think the original TV version is much better. Peter Cushings version was way too silly.

When the Lost in Time set comes out I think we should start about 10 different threads on it like the Star Wars DVD's have this week

Count me in!

Wait - does that mean we have to have anti-BBC trolls threadcrapping everywhere? Hmmm, this is gonna require more thought.

As for the Dalek movies, while I certainly prefer the Real Version, I don't think that the movies are all THAT bad. One big point: Peter Cushing is always a pleasure to watch.

The downer is of course that although having to compress the story from 7 and 6 episodes respectively, they managed to have the story drag in places just as much as the originals.

(Not that the originals are bad, just that the Daleks *NEEDS* to be watched in small half hour chunks. A marathon 3-hour blitz really points out the flaws of the story that would get missed in the episodic format)

I just wish that the R1 Invasion Earth 2150 wasnt the messed up print, or that they sold DEoE by itself in R2. Oh well, whachay gonna do?

Well, my copy of Ghostlight showed up yesterday. I worked late, so I didnt get a chance to watch much beyond some of the extras and a bit of an episode - so I cant give you the full report, but here are my initial impressions.

Of all the discs out thusfar, this is one with the worst looking video (strange, considering this was the last - and thus the newest - episode). Not that it's BAD, but with the low lighting levels, there was just only so much they could do with the footage. In the end, it just doesnt look as 'grand' as like Seeds of Death or Tomb of the Cybermen.

The extras were excellent as usual - perhaps a bit light considering how much room they had on the disc. Being the last episode filmed, I would have hoped for some kind of wrap party footage, or the Who legacy - something like that.

I guess all in all, since Ghostlight wasnt my favorite story, with a restoration that doesnt quite meet my high expectations - I'd say that its a solid disc, but I'm looking foward to the LiT set or Horror of Fang Rock way more.

Just curious - How many of you are selective about which Doctor Who DVDs you buy? Up until now I've been buying all of the DVDs as they come out in the U.S. I'm a big fan of Doctors 3-5, I like Doctors 1 & 2 and I'm enough of a fanatic to buy the better stories for Doctors 6 & 7.

But looking ahead to next year's UK titles, Claws of Axos and Horror of Fang Rock are apparently confirmed according to Outpost Gallifrey. OG also mentioned DVD rumors concerning The Web Planet, The Mind Robber and Attack of the Cyberman. Aside from The Mind Robber, I'm not a big fan of this handful of episodes. I think I'll be tempted to skip some of these stories once these title come to the U.S.

But, odds are, I will buy them all. The special features alone are generally worth the price of the DVD. And even the weaker stories can be entertaining to watch once in a blue moon. And my old video recordings of TV broadcasts from the 80s & 90s have seen better days.

Whenever I'm trying to rationalize buying DVDs for weaker Dr Who stories, I ask myself if I'd buy my least favorite story, The Twin Dilemma. So long as there are interesting special features, I probably would.

I'm in for the whole thing. Being a completeist aside, I figure that even the Bad Who will have some good points about it - extras and what have you. 'Sides, after a hundred and 147 episodes, whats another 2 or 3, huh?

as long as they have the quality and extra features that the DVD's now do, I will buy them all... even my least favorite stories like "Kinda" and "Delta and the Bannermen", which, Delta, I understand has lots of extra material from it.

However, if the BBC change thier minds and start releasing extra-less DVD's I doubt I would buy them all if it was something I already had on VHS Video.

Is Twin Dilemma really your worst favorite stiory? I was so surprised how disliked that story is when I found online Doctor Who fans, I always thought it was one of the best 80's stories.

I'm in for the long haul. I plan on picking up every single DVD they plan to release. The extras alone are worth it.

Yeah. I'm a Who whore!

Just a note of curiosity.. when will the new tv series come out on DVD? Any word on that or is that too far ahead to think about already?

I presume it'll take a long time before we see the new series on TV here in North America so it may be better for us to get them on DVD to watch sooner.

I saw a note from the BBC worldwide saying that they anticipated having the new series out in the US as quickly as possible. So we might have a little bit of lag, but not as much as you might think.

(Of course, I know folks in the UK who will be recording for me and sending the tapes right away. I expect a weeks lag between premere and my seeing the episode. )

I buy every DVD that comes out.

I haven't seen very many of the older B&W episodes, but will glady buy any unseen episodes.

BTW, how many people listen to the Big Finish audios?

I have the majority of them and have put them into DVD cases to match the DVDs! I've got about almost 2 shelves worth!
