hehe, I'll never forget my brother's and my reactions when we first popped the original Elite disc in my player (after the big build-up of how great the transfer was)...
.. after the first second, my brother said, "dang dude... you got ripped off!" while at the same time I exclaimed, "WTF"!

Me too! I remember when I first played the original Elite disc... I had been talking my brother's ear off about how great this disc was supposed to look. We sit back, I hit "PLAY" and a fuzzy, jittery hodge-podge of the intro starts playing. Immediately my brother laughs out, "you got hosed!" while I simultaneously yell, "WTF!" only to have the image shatter and replaced by the pristine image. We stop mid-sentence, look at each other, and simply say, "whoa".

Do you have a chance to read the responses on page 2 of this thread?

Is "Speak to the Dead" a new interview? I was going to pick this up anyway, but more new stuff sweetens the deal. More than anything I am grabbing this for the doc, because I already own a few copies of it, but if the picture quality is good and there are other new extras, I'll be stoked.

language:english dolby 5.1.
No original mono?! That would blow. It would blow even harder if it's in widescreen, too.
Oh well, I'm still perfectly happy with my Elite disc if they do screw this new one up. I would just rent it to see that new documentary, I suppose.

This (the Dimension Extreme/Genius edition) has the original mono (in DD 2.0), no 5.1. Great transfer with some beautiful grain, not way overly DVNRed like the Elite Millennium. It's not cropped or widescreen, either -- lots of typos and/or confusing text on the back of the case. Standard 4:3.

Yes, the typos are present on both the slipcover and the actual DVD case itself.
When I first read the back of the case ("Widescreen Version: Presented in a Format Preserving the 1.33:1 Aspect Ratio of Its Original Theatrical Exhibition") I was confused and wondered if it was a 1.33:1 picture in a widescreen frame or what. No such thing -- standard 4:3 picture.
This is the best I've personally seen the movie look on home video. For all the praise the Elite Millennium edition received, I always felt that it had way too much DVNR. It was like looking at a photograph with moving objects placed over it.
This is a much better picture in my opinion because it's far more filmlike. There's some slight dancing grain while still presenting a clean, clear picture. Exactly what I was hoping this release would be.
The blurb about the 5.1 mix concerned me but my copy is 2.0 mono. No 5.1 tracks to speak of.

The annoying freeze-frame problem the Elite version suffered from (because of splice-damage on some edits) is not on this new Weinstein transfer. The action flows perfectly. And I agree, the image looks more film-like on this new transfer. Definitely worth the upgrade.

I should also let you guys know it comes with a shiny slipcover (with Romero's autograph photoshopped on) to match Diary of the Deads slipcover.

If you're looking to replace you're old versions of Night...hold off. While this version sports a new transfer, its missing many of the features from past editions. The red case 'Elite' version still appears to best in terms of special features. The PQ is nice though, a slight upgrade over the 'Elite'.
