>>......any fan of the label will have to admit that MY BRILLIANT CAREER is a pretty huge step away from anything else they have ever released and is a pretty big step away from the image they created of themselves...

No different than say, CRITERION selling schlock like ARMAGEDDON to help pay the bills once in a while...in this case the inverse is true.

You really can't blame Blue for trying to make some money with a more mainstream release. I personally think they chose the wrong director to focus on. Gillian Armstrong's earlier films were well recieved and had some cred when they came out 20+ years ago, but they've since been largely forgotten and ultimately aren't that interesting. Fire & Ice should be a big hit for them.

Hopefully the smaller cult & horror films we all know and love will be-a-coming.
I suggested some titles to Lustig & co. I am hoping one day they'll see the light of day on dvd.

Unlike some people,I don't buy every single title a favorite label releases

So I'm not upset with Blue Underground for working on all types of genres, instead of only cult/horror/exploitation.

But I'm sure some will cry 'sell out' for them expanding there horizons so to speak.

Just like how some Criterion snobs were angry at them for releasing a couple Micheal Bay movies.

Crying is a waste of energy....let them expand...big fucking deal. They are still an above average label and they offer ME...I repeat, me....good titles. I don't really care about the next guy and what he wants and likes. Mr. Selfish here. It's all about me.

If Mondo Macabro realesed a Mary Poppins dvd tomorrow, I won't squirt tears and bitch. We have the power to buy what we want...and hopefully avoid what we don't support.

I've bought all but two and they will be added later anyhow...so I still don't give a shit what they release, as long as I have an urge to have that title in my library, regardless of what label it's on.

Long time, no bump.

I haven't seen this posted so, hopefully it's not a repost. Blue Underground has released 6 of The Mondo Cane Collection films in 2 separate releases. Each is about $14 and is a good way to pick some of these up if you didn't want to pay the high price of the LE release. They are the exact same slimpacks and it still says "The Mondo Cane Collection" on the covers.

Shockumentaries Vol. 1 - Mondo Kane, Mondo Kane 2 and Women of the World

Shockumentaries Vol. 2 - Africa Addio, Goodbye Uncle Tom and The Godfathers of Mondo

So is Adio Zio Tom too political to get a re-release?

Not sure why just these 6. These releases aren't even on BU's website so maybe they're quietly trying to get them out there.

Hmmm, no new post since June, yet they released some interesting things like NEWSFRONT, STARSTRUCK, BAD BOB BUBBLY, do I assume NO ONE bought these?

I assume ADIO ZIO TOM isnt in the release is they need to justify to still sell the box set which is still available everywhere.

Well, Addio Zio Tom is the Italian title for Goodbye Uncle Tom. The director's cut of it (which carries the Italian title, but I don't believe was ever actually released before, IIRC) is going to remain exclusive to the boxset. The US version, which is now re-released in the Shockumentary pack, is still very political. The director's cut of Africa Addio is remaining exclusive to the box, as well.

Since no one posted this, street dates have been announced and covers posted for LA SCORTA and HOW TO KILL A JUDGE, each coming February 28th: http://www.blue-underground.com/coming_soon.php

Both look good, though according to IMDb, no one seems to have seen HOW TO KILL A JUDGE, so I'll probably wait on that.

why does every movie that is so violent and so disturbing, deemed the "most controversial" movie ever made? i can't keep buying these only to be disappointed (Cannibal Holocaust, I Spit on Your Grave).

Repetitive, lack of creativity, bad marketing. The same as when a film comes out to theaters and some quote whore labels it as the best movie ever or best movie of the year.

Yeah, agreed. Maybe I'm jaded but I've seen the two films you've mentioned and enjoyed them, but was far from disturbed. I've yet to see ANY exploitation film that lives up to any of its hype, and I've seen quite a few.

I have it on good authority that BU is planning a release of Maniac Cop this summer, maybe even a box set.

This is one of the most controversial movies ever made and will probably be the dvd release of the year.*

Yeah, your good authority is full of it. Don May of Synapse posted on his blog that they are releasing the first one.

Also agreed. CH and ISOYG were both reasonably entertaining and well made films (surprisingly, given their reputations as bottom of the barrel trash), but neither really were that disturbing or even as gratuitous as one would be led to believe. Not that such qualities are necessary or even desirable in an exploitation film, although they have come to essentially define the genre.

I just find it interesting how mainstream critical sensibilities, especially here in the US, create such absurdly overblown reputations of the objectionability of any non-mainstream film that has sex or violence, or otherwise doesn't conform to some middle class/middle brow ideal of "decency." It seems that every film that exists outside the mainstream critical boundaries created by the likes of Siskel, Ebert, Maltin, Shalit, Medved, and the like, somehow becomes the next closest thing to snuff porn.

Granted, both of the movies mentioned were a product of another time with another set of mainstream societal sensibilities than we have now. But it was also a time when narrative art in general was much edgier and took more risks than it does now, too. So go figure...

I wish these guys would get their shit together and update their site more often. They've always been good about problem and replacement discs (in terms of information and fast turnaround), but nine times out of ten, upcoming releases are announced somewhere else weeks before they turn up on the BU site... Scum, for instance, has been posted at DavisDVD for a few days. It might be nice to hear a little bit about upcoming stuff in the News section, which as it stands seems to plug Lustig's screenings and not much else.

Mondo Macabro is worse. Faaaaar worse. They still don't even have a release date on their site for Virgins From Hell, even though we all know it's out on the 31st of this month. I've even seen advance reviews for Satan's Blood (which is out Feb. 28) which hasn't even goddamn appeared on the MM website. So my question is...

What the hell is up with these companies? Don't they realize that the internet is their lifeblood? That most people, even loyal fans like myself who eat this stuff up, will have never seen or heard of many of the films they acquire without reading about them online? You'd think there would be a bit of effort put into getting the word out about this stuff... These companies have great releases, but how the hell is anyone supposed to know without combing the release lists every week?

Laziness. fuck 'em.

I've given up on some of my fave sites for these reasons....and I'm now used to just moving several weeks into the future through dvdaf's release list, which I find very reliable, and scope for certian studio releases. At least that way I know something is coming. You can go pretty far into the future at dvdaf and the list is usually complete and often lists titles not found elsewhere.

I didn't see it posted anywhere, so for anyone unaware, BU will release 4 gialli on March 28th: Black Belly of the Tarantula, Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion, The Fifth Cord and The Pyjama Girl Case.

Let's hope they don't get delayed....
