White Jazz is hardly a sequel. Ed Exley is only a very minor supporting character in the book by James Ellroy, and none of the other characters in L.A. Confidential exist in the new story.

And in plot terms, White Jazz is about a cop who gets caught up in the feud between Exley and Smith.

There was also an episode of "Page to Screen" that used to air on Bravo that focused on L.A. Confidential.

I think Kiefer Sutherland as Vincennes was a crucial mistake. Sutherland is no suave Dean Martin-wannabe.
Sutherland would have made a passable Bud White, only because Sutherland plays the tough villain very well. He may not be a muscle guy, but he can still sell "danger."

All I've seen of the pilot are still photos and it does look strangely miscast. When I first heard of Kiefer playing Jack Vincennes, my reaction was "Wha??!" But I'm a fan of the film and the book, so the pilot remains a curiosity of mine so I'd like to see it included as a bonus.
