Should I get a LD player?? I really don't care whay you think, that's my decision.

After checking out out DVDTalk for about a year though and accumulating around 400 DVDs, I've decided to expand my movie collecting habits and perhaps get a LD player. I've noticed there are a ton of LD Criterions and less popular movies that will probably never be released on DVD. I was wondering if someone could direct me to a website where I could get the low-down on LD's. I took a chance and bought the Criterion edition of How to Succeed in Business LD ... for 9.99 along with a bunch of other DVD's & cheap LD's at www.LVD.com and have been scanning LD'on EBAY. (Hopefully, I will get that OOP Devil's Advocate) I can get some LD's less than I would rent a VHS for at Blockbuster and then just unload it on EBAY if I don't like it. Anyway, help is appreciated.

There are plenty of LD players for sale on Ebay to be had for fairly little money. Of course, with the ever-increasing amount of DVDs being released it won't take long before you'll be replacing all those bargain bin lasers, so you might as well save that dough for more DVDs. I've collected laserdiscs for over a decade and only recently stopped after realizing how much money I was wasting. A year ago, I figured that 90% of the stuff I had on laser would never come out on DVD. I was wrong. I'm one of the last holdouts and even I realize now that laser is dead. The only reasons to buy an ld player now are (a) if you've got money to burn and just can't seem to find enough DVDs to buy, or (b) to watch the handful lasers that actually beat out their DVD counterparts. It just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

I think you should get an 8-track tape player.

There's some really neat stuff on 8-track that will probably never come out on cassette or CD...

I would not buy one for the simple reason that most movies you may be thinking about purchasing on laser that are not on dvd yet will most likely be released on dvd in the near future.....I have to admit that it is nice having copies of Forrest Gump, ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future Trilogy, Grease, Footloose, Pretty In Pink etc....in widescreen splendor!!! I also have movies which may never make it to dvd such as Late For Dinner and others which is why I have held on to my laserdisc capabilities!!!

As you stated....there are movies on laser which may never make it to dvd....at least not for some time anyway!!! I just would not invest alot of money into buying these laserdiscs!!! If you can find a player for under $100 and spend no more than $10-$15 per laser, you will be doing okay.....

This is a question I have asked myself. I have decided that I will not. There are a lot of LD (like Criterions) that will never be on DVD. However, it is not worth it to me.

Pioneer makes a LD/DVD/CD system. You should sell your existing DVD player and buy this one. Now one unit plays all your discs.

about a year ago I bought a LD player from someone on this very forum. I have about 25 LDs some of which I KNOW will never be on DVD. I do not regret my decision and I can give you 30 LDs that have something the DVDs dont. I am compiling a list right now. DVDs are my first love but I have no problem with some bargain lasers. My copy of With Honors LD (WS) should be coming soon

Out of curiousity, what are the LDs that you "KNOW" will never come out on DVD?

I think I'm going to get one too. I picked up the Star Wars THX discs cheap and even when they do come to DVD it will probably be the SE's, so laser is probably my best bet. You can also pick up a lot of good movies for a few bucks.

I just got a LD player and have picked up the movies everyone is waiting for on DVD. Sheesh, copies of the LD's on DVD from China are bringing big bucks. Why not just invest those $$$ in a legal LD version? As a secondary hobby, it's a whole lot cheaper than DVDs and I get instant gratification. Can't beat that

Let's not forget alot of concerts and music videos that werent even released in the STATES. only on Japanese LD

Don't forget the 1977 and 1980 versions of Close Encounters. And, perhaps, Blade Runner with the voice over narration.

Just get one. Its only a hundred or two bucks. Thats the price or a few nice dinners or a weekend of partying. Well worth the price if you enjoy collecting movies. Since you have over 400 movies, I suspect you ain't poor. Its probably will be fun hunting down the hard to get titles than knowing that you can drop a twenty at a local walmart to buy xyz title. Bring back memories of the old fansub anime days... This is sorta like the dreamcast vs ps2 debate. The hardware is cheap compare to what you may be spending on the software.

I bought a LD player at Ebay for $50, and it was well worth it. I picked up a few titles fairly cheap that may one day make it to DVD, but not in the immediate future:

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (deleted scenes and extras)
Clash of the Titans (Letterboxed)
CB4 (Letterboxed - yes I do like this movie!)
Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (Pan and Scan, but couldn't pass up the $6.99 price for this sealed disc)

Now I'm setting my sights on the Jason and the Argonauts Criterion disc set!

You should.. Think of the criterion collection of titles such as PULP FICTION... one which disney is not touching for a long time.. and i doubt it will have the amount of stuff the LD has. think of all the disney movies that are box sets! Beauty and the beast in-complete version.


here. i highly suggest getting a player. they are low in cost, and the quality sometime surpases dvd. the only downfall, the size.. but as a record collector... I sure as hell don't mind them. they are really low cost aswell. so why not?

I bought a LD player after my DVD player as well. You just can't have a complete movie collection without getting some laserdiscs.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Criterion with Gilliam and Jones Commentary.
Blade Runner: Criterion (international cut)
Dances with Wolves 4 hour version
Close Encounters: Criterion 1977 and 1980 versions
Jaws LE with complete documentary
E.T. LE with great documentary and the movie will be changed by the time its on DVD.
Schindler's List
A Night at the Opera: Criterion with Maltin commentary and nice scrapbook of Marx photos.
Beatles Anthology
Midnight Cowboy with commentary from director.
Showboat complete box set with all versions
That Entertainment complete box set
Who Framed Roger Rabbit Uncut version
Supercop: Criterion with deleted scenes
Tombstone with deleted scenes
Producers: Criterion this is still one of Mel Brooks best films

Ok, so does someone want to educate the rest of us on which laser disc player to consider? I remember vaguely from the last discussion that there are players that can play both sides of the disc and support 5.1 sound. Anything else to look for and models to suggest?
