Since this is a conversation about lasor disc, I was wondering if any of you laser disc owners could answer a few questions.

How is the quality of Laser Dics' compared to DVDs or even VHS?

Are most movies flippers?

Do Laser disc movies become worn out?

Thanks

Do youself a favor and stick with the Pioneer LD players! They are the standard in which all LD players are judged!

Players do play both sides (but not all of them so be sure it does) and are capable of DD 5.1 and DTS but for DD 5.1 (AC-3) you need a RF Demodulator which can cost as much as the LD player! For DTS output you need a digital audio output( either Coaxial or Optical). I knew I had to have DD 5.1 and DTS ability for LD's like The Phantom Manace which still today is the best sounding DVD or LD I have ever heard (and if you check my DVD'LD list you will see I have heard quite a few)!

thecrazydude
1.Some LD's can be as good as some non-anamorphic DVD's but if a DVD is done correctly there is no comparison with the DVD which is head and shoulders better! If you do not have a 16x9 TV (or one that does the "squeeze trick") then LD's can look as good as some Ananmorphic and Non-Anamorphic DVD's. VHS tapes can only look as good as LD's if the LD was done poorly by a studio who didn't give a damn (and that was rare with LD's).

2.All LD's are flippers and a lot of them are 3 or 4 sided which leads to 2 or 3 flips.

3. LD's will not wear out like tapes because the LD's are read with a laser so there is no physical contact with the LD when reading it. There are some cases of LD's getting "ROT" which is caused by a defective manufacturing process that caused moisture to get in between the layers of the LD.

Man I am jealous! I hope this comes out in DVD soon. I love the previous two!!

I would say Pioneer would be the best choice, but I ended up getting an RCA. Only wanted to spend $100 and the used RCA had everything I wanted. Auto flip, optical audio out, S-video out, jog dial on remote, LCD display and almost every button also on the player, and good picture quality (though not as good as the top of the line Pioneers). The only thing I'm missing is digital memory, but I'm happy and I didn't spend a lot of money on it.

I was being a bit sarcastic. I see alot of posts where people want to know if they should buy this movie or that. I just wanted information of LD players and discs and from this I will make my own decision.

Thanks all for input. I would like a site with a bit more technical info on LD's (CAV vs. CLV, player options, etc.).

If you are a DTS fan then its still worth it if you can get one cheap. I haven't seen release dates for the Alien series, Die Hard series, Armageddon, True Lies etc. in DTS yet.

does this player output decoded AC3 or do you need a RF demodulator with it?

I am pretty sure this player does not demodulate itself. I think you need a demodulator in the receiver or a separate unit. I have not seen a laser disc player that will do that for you . Of course I could be wrong.

I thought some of the later Elites had built in demodulators.

This is the one player they still make, not sure on the other ones. I think this one still requires the demodulator.

Here's a list of LDs that surpass the DVD versions (IMHO)
  • Halloween Criterion Collection
    Carpenter commentary track
  • Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Uncut version will likely never be seen again
  • JAWS
DVD cut documentary in half and is missing supplements from the LD boxed set
  • The Star Wars Trilogy
The DVD is...wait a minute, there is no DVD. If there ever is, they will likely be the 'new' versions, which would make the Definitive Collection boxed set (and the single verions, of course) the last representation of the original films.
  • ET: The Extra Terrestrial
Spielberg has already said he would like the film to be digitally altered to edit out the guns. The LD is uncut.
  • dts Digital Surround
Many DVDs that have been released as special editions were missing the dts tracks from the LDs. A few titles: Armageddon, Blade, Toy Story, Boogie Nights, The Scream Trilogy and more. The titles I mentioned have all been released as SE's of some sort on DVD already. Let's not forget the Jurrasic Park fiasco, and how the dts LD stomps all over both the dts and DD DVD versions.[/list]The above mention discs are but a fraction of the superior LDs available and the only reason I mention these are because they are in my collection, simply because they may or may not see the light of day on DVD

I have the Boogie Nights DTS LD and the sound is pretty amazing. The coolest thing about LD is that movies like Star Wars that are just in regular Dolby Surround sound nearly as good as DD 5.1 in some cases. I know when Han shots the gun in the garbage disposal and the laser beam starts bouncing around it makes you want to duck for cover. Dolby Surround on DVD sounds terrible in most cases. Guess the fact its uncompressed on LD helps it sound better. Another good thing about LD is that THX actually means something on a LD.

What I think is funny are all the people who spend $350-$400 on a DVD of Salo on E-bay. For $200 they could buy a Laserdisc player, and for $20 they could buy the Criterion Laserdisc of Salo (I see it on E-bay all the time) and save a lot of money.

Might want to check local Half Price Books in your area if you are looking for LDs. I found my Tombstone Director's Edition there recently and when I walked in today I picked up the Alien and Aliens Collector's Edition Box sets for $15 each. Not sure if these are exactly the same as the DVD versions, but $15 is a steal either way.

Most of the later Pioneer LD players had the demodulators built in, not just the Elites.

No, no, the later Pioneers all had RF MODULATORS built in. No LD players I know of had a demodulator built-in. You still need a demodulator at the receiver end to demodulate the RF signal into an AC-3 bitstream. Early DD receivers had RF demodulators built-in, but now none of them do, since people only use DVD Players which only need a digital (coax or optical) connection to pass the bitstream, not an RF connection. So you have to buy an external RF demodulator which costs like $200.

Most flagship receivers have RF inputs for laserdisc players and even a few under each flagship have the same inputs. Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer and Yamaha come to mind. Laserdiscs aren't dead yet in the minds of the collectors.

I still love my LD player. I have 125 LD's and even though I don't buy them anymore I won't be selling the player or movies anytime soon.

The Star Wars Definitive CAV THX discs along with the Dances with Wolves 4 hour version are wonderful on LD.

Sorry, I don't know all the technical aspects of it. I do know that I could not output Dolby Digital from the LD player I bought in 1991 (obviously), but could from a nonElite Pioneer I bought in 1998 and, coupled with my Yamaha DSP A-1 receiver, I could enjoy both DD and DTS.

My technical bad.

I've noticed that every time someone asks this question, Laserdisc player prices Skyrocket on Ebay. I guess a lot of people get convinced when this topic shows up.

Anyway - I started LD long before I got into the whole DVD thing. I still pick up the occasional silver platter when I find them cheap enough.

The BEST reason to get an LD player? I doubt that the Vanilla Ice masterpiece "Cool as Ice" will be showing up on DVD any time soon.

(Joke! It was a joke, people! Ok, I've got the movie - but I got it for a buck! Ok, that's 50 cents more than it was worth - but come on. Now all I need is Brian Bozworth's "Stone Cold" and I'll be living large).

I've been buying lasers for over 12 years and I currently have over 700 titles that are not out on DVD yet. Many of these wil not see the light of day on DVD anytime soon.

If you are a collector of mainstream movies and feel that Star Wars is the oldest movie you can own, then laser is not for you. A lot of the people who respond to this thread with negative comments are people who I feel might fall into this category.

If you enjoy classic & more obscure films, then I definitely think you should look into buying a laserdisc player.
