I have a 27" 1998 tv and heard using the rca's on the LD player will be better as the tv is newer and will have better quality translating the picture(hence my complaint of the softness of the faces discs)

as you said the 704 would be a better bet to improve this.

well for giggles I tried the s-video( and let the LD player do the work) and the picture is much sharper, much better and much more crisp. this doesnt make sense to what people say about using rca if you have a newer tv or s-video if older. anyway it works for me. maybe i got it wrong and its the other way around but it definitley made a difference.
If you use the S-video output, you are defaulting to the comb filter in the LD player. If using the composite RCA cable, you're defaulting to the comb filter in your TV.

Generally speaking a newer TV will have a better comb filter than the D505. Specific cases may vary and it's always a good idea to try both out and see which works better.

You say the picture is sharper, but how are the colors? I think the 505 is supposed to have pretty noisy colors.

Josh: the colors were real bad on RCA hook up, much better through s-video. on RCA I could have the color setting 1/4 set to get correct colors on faces. s-vides set it correctly. strange I know. anyway I have had a hard time getting a CLD-704 but found a guy locally to sell me his Mitsubishi M-V7057 which is a 704 clone and got better reviews even. only 15 discs have been played on it since new and original owner in perfect condition with remote. sold it to me for $250.00 which I thought was fair. will pick it up next monday so cant wait to put it through its paces. now to sell the D505 or should I keep it for a spare ?

anyway thanks for your great input, advice and knowledge!!!!!!!!

will let you know next week how the new purchase turned out.

Interesting. Well, as I said individual cases may vary so it's always best to try it both ways.

anyway I have had a hard time getting a CLD-704 but found a guy locally to sell me his Mitsubishi M-V7057 which is a 704 clone and got better reviews even. only 15 discs have been played on it since new and original owner in perfect condition with remote. sold it to me for $250.00 which I thought was fair. will pick it up next monday so cant wait to put it through its paces.
Performance-wise the M-V7057 is identical to the D704. $250 is a very good price for one assuming it's in good condition. One thing to be aware of is that the Mitsubishi's build quality isn't as sturdy as the original Pioneer, so be sure to treat it well. You are fortunate in finding a local seller. I had a 7057 shipped to me once and after Fed Ex was done with it the thing was in pieces.

Can someone please update the list of movies that would be good to have on LD because either the LD version is unedited or the movie still isn’t being released on DVD?

We upgraded to a 65” 16x9 TV and had to upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player because the DVDs on the DVL-909 player looked horrible on the big screen TV. However I am trying to convince my husband we should still keep the Laserdisc player hooked up for those rare to find laserdiscs. I do have a few rare goodies, and would like to add some more to my collection.

I find it rather funny as to how old this thread is.

I love seeing the old ET comments in this thread, claiming that any DVD release will only be the PC, updated version. And George Lucas should be thrilled that he's probably single-handedly keeping half of the used LD market going for obvious reasons.

Josh: on the back of my pioneer cld-d505 there is and attenuator switch that goes on or off. the only thing I can see it does is make the sound lower when on. you or anyone have info on what this switch is actually for ? thanks.

If you got extra money to spent, why not? You made a good argument that there are some OOP LD discs you can't get on DVDs. So you need to ask yourself if getting those OOPs are worth the money.

My guess is that if the OOP LD titles that are not currently on DVD, they will be eventually on DVD. DVDs are in the mainstream now and it's to the companys' benefit to take advantage of this while DVDs is hot. But if you just can't wait for those titles to get to DVDs, getting a LD player is the way to go.

In a nutshell, I believe it lowers the bass tones. While playing a disc, you notice the speakers are distorting... you can turn the switch on and your speakers should sound better.

That really depends on your taste in movies, doesn't it? There are thousands of laserdisc titles out there and a good chunk of them (especially older movies) are nowhere in sight on DVD.

I'll echo what Josh said and just add that even if a movie comes out on DVD, it may differ from the LD either in content (Roger Rabbit, Song of the South, etc) or extras (Criterions, JAWS, The Frighteners, etc). With a film like JAWS, I see no reason for Universal to go back and do another release anytime soon, (or ever) so the boxed set LD may be the best bet to ever see those extras.

And the list goes on and on...
