When I had my entire collection at my disposal (350ish), I always had this problem. It drove me nuts because I tried to have something on hand for just about any mood. Dopey, interesting, intelligent, exciting, visually interesting, whatever. But I never had anything that would fit the "I just want to watch something" mood.
However, I moved to LA last fall and now only have about a third of my collection with me. I had to pick what I absolutely loved and kind of do a mini-selection. Now I can find something all of the time (I think TV season sets work great for this sort of mood).
When I go back to visit family, I will be able to get to the rest of my collection and I know there are a bunch of movies I'm dying to see.
So you could always lock up a few discs and put them out of easy access for a while and when you stumble across them again, it's new and exciting.
(Plus it saves space and looks cleaner -- that's an easy sell for a girlfriend/wife!)

My name is Paul, and I'm an indecisive DVD watcher.
Netflix is my saving grace. I stopped purchasing DVD's when I got to around 150 and found that I wasn't watching them more than once. Now I am on the 5 movie plan/$30 and couldn't be happier.

I have the same problem as well.Sometimes I even have a movie picked out in my head but i go to the shelf to grab it and end up second guessing myself and end up watching nothing.

I usually ask myself first if I feel like French, Korean, American, Mexican, etc.
Frankly, I HAVE had those occasions I took so long to decide that I decided it was too late to start watching and ending up reading instead.

With watching movies I also have a very hard time choosing which one to watch.
With TV show DVD's, I do have the problem choosing which show to watch. But once I've choosen which show to watch, I always watch them in broadcast order. So if I watched episode four last week, I'll watch episode five next, and so on, and so on...

I wish I had that problem to be caught up and have to decide what to watch again. I have the opposite problem. I'm forced to watch my new stuff that has not been watched yet. It's been about 3 - 4 months since I got to pick something old. I was on my last disc today and then the mail comes. Because of the DDD 20% off sale and no willpower 3 more DVD's in the mail and about 5 more on the way. The TV season sets always take me a week or 2 to watch. Not enough time and too damn many DVD's.

i have just over 600 DVDs now, so sometimes it is a problem deciding what to watch. I have gone so far as to put a chair next to my collection, so I can sit down and browse in comfort! I usually end up watching the Big Lebowski again.

I was sane up until the beginning of this year. I had about 150 DVDs accumulated over 2 years, nearly all of which I had watched. Then I discovered super-cheap DVDs - the $5.50 bin at Walmart, $5-6 at pawn shops, 4 for $30 sale at CH, several great deals on TV box sets. I have bought about 200 more DVDs since the beginning of this year, (and 6 TV sets) and have only watched maybe 30-40 of them.
I also find that the more I have, the harder it is to choose one. Especially when I want to pop one in while on the Nordic track - I prefer an actioner that I have seen so it doesn't require my full attention, but even given that limitation I have a ton to choose from.

Been there. I purposely don't put my dvd's in any order so it takes LESS time to pick one out. It sounds backwards but it works.

I decided to combat this disorder with a good, old-fashoned viewing system! Most people think I'm nuts when I explain it, but it really helps me keep possibilities to a minimum, which is good for a 600 film collection.
I, like others, have dozens and dozens of unwatched DVD's. Most of these are films I've seen before but not on DVD. About a third are unviewed blind buys.
I wanted to devise a system that allows me to get through all of my unviewed DVD's quickly, but with out neglecting the films I love. Currently this is how it works:
5 disc rotation
Disc 1: Unviewed previously seen movie
Disc 2: Unviewed DVD alphabetically from the front of the collection (I'm on G now)
Disc 3: Previously viewed DVD
Disc 4: Unviewed blind buy
Disc 5: Unviewed DVD alphabetically from the back of the collection (I'm on S now)
Also, I've been throwing a Bond film in a 6th slot until I get through the whole Bond collection. Next up is Goldeneye.
This way when I sit down to pick a film, I generally only wind up with a few "possibles", and it's pretty easy to decide from there.
Of course there are exceptions to this system. For instance, viewing with the girlfriend is outside of the system. I just pull possibles randomly until she says she wants to see one. Also, films like Star Wars, LOTR, Matrix, and other top favorites are viewed at will.
I supposed I could have just started alphabetically and kept going that way, but to me this is a little more fun.
So what do they call this sickness that I have?

I also have this problem. I usually pick 3-5 movies I'm interested in watching and just let my wife sort through them. Then we randomly pick from the pile that has been approved by both of us.
There are also a large number of movies that I simply haven't gotten to because of their running time: Cleopatra, Once Upon a Time in the West, Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-hur, etc. If I know I have a quiet weekend coming up, I can sort through my 'haven't watched' list by running time. Helps to narrow down a list that is currently over 100 titles.

This is the funniest damn thread. I'm giggling reading this because I thought I was the only damned freak in the world who does this.
Maybe we should start a support group, meet in a chat room once a week, or drop by on those occasions when we really want to watch a movie but can't damn decide which one to watch.

chsidwel,
That's funny, I've got OUATITW and LoA on my "to watch" list as well, and never seem to get to them because of length.
I finally got to Das Boot which was 3.5 hours. Another long one I have yet to watch is JFK Director's Cut.
Funny how running time never keeps me from watching LOTR...
