Correct! I know that this does nothing that a regular razor knife can't do, but I thought it was kinda cool and cheap to boot!

I worried that this just cuts the sticker at the box seam and doesn't remove the sticker itself.

Those things are dangerous! I have one for a CD and it took the sticker thing off and cut right down the side of the case. So now there is a huge gash in one of my CD cases!

Goo Gone to get rid of the excess sticky left on the case. Not so good on paper, but takes the tape residue off plastic no problem.

I had to return 50 first dates to BestBuy because the security strips tore some of the artwork when I removed them. The girl in returns tried to tell me that was not a defect as long as the dvd played fine. I finally got a new one but she said she had to open it since the one I returned was open. While she was removing the security strips she stretched the clear plastic cover and I told her that I wanted another one that was not stretched. She asked if I was joking and when I said NO shegave me a eat-sh*t look and sighed. I then asked to see her manager.

What crap!!!

I say just wrap the entire case in a clear plastic sticker and watch people try to get that off!

universal has at least made an attempt to remedy this problem -

my "reality bites" se came in a keep case with two flip locks (on the long side) to prevent opening...no stickers...a really cool case and it completely eliminates the problem...

i hope this catches on with other releases

they dont bother me that much. the only time they do get to me, is when the artwork is titled or outside the plastic sleeve, so the you have the security sticker sticking to the artwork itself. it happened to me once with Mallrats and it ripped part of the artwork.

I think the flip locks are a good idea, I have a couple like that. I don't know why they need all those stickers though. Alot of gamecube games don't even have any stickers on them.

I don't like them but they are still easier then CD stickers. If you have finger nails all you need to do is to carefully pick at one end of the sticker ON THE HARD PLASTIC not the clear cover as that can damage it. I can usually remove them whole.

I do not like the stupid flip locks. It's just two extra steps and annoys the heck out of me when I try to open the case and those darn things are there.

Also, the first thing I do after opening a new DVD is remove, bend in half, and throw away the security device, itself; I know some evil conglomorate is tracking all of them...

edit: in an ironic twist, aren't the stickers on snappers so much easier to remove? too bad the cases themselves suck
I do that same thing too! I get a certain weird satisfaction about it and am rather OC about it. Heh, my GF even hands me DVD cases she just opened to remove that thing. But I have had to learn (the hard way) that you CANNOT touch the security devices that are on a paper case behind those clear plastic holders. I learned the hard way when I tried to carefully peel back the cardboard on Close Encounters and carefully remove the device only to have it tear the box.

I work in a video store and I can tell you, bar none, that using a knife down the middle on all three sides works far better than any other approach. Only problem is that often times, some adhesive will be left behind, but this problem can be corrected by some Goo Gone or lighter fluid.

And for those who hate the security stickers on CD cases, here's the approach I use. First, take off the shrink wrap (duh). Then, take the front cover of the CD case off (this can be done by sticking your fingernail into the hinge at the bottom). The case should now only be connected to the cover by the security sticker, which is more easily peeled off in one piece, but must be done slowly. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, it's harder to explain than I thought it would be.

That's really anal. I get pissed when the artwork tears a bit, but I would never return it. I think anybody in her position would have given you a look.

yeah, they suck.

I've been having more trouble with them lately than in the past . Some just are stuck on there super tight and you end up messing up the plastic on the keepcase getting them off.

I don't think it's anal to expect something you pay money for not to be torn up before you buy it. If it happens later (due to your own ignorance) it's one thing, but when it happens right in the store its another.

I wouldn't return a disc to a store because the sticker ripped the insert (although I do now CHECK to see if I can get one with the cover seated properly).

However, if you return a disc to a store for exchange the clerk should NOT give you shit about it. You're right to expect a fast and problem-free exchange.

I know they want to stop the buy-to-rental conversion (i.e. buy a disc, watch it, don't like it, exchange for a new one, return the sealed disc for your money back) so they won't let you leave the store until the disc is opened - but I always insist on opening the disc myself. "Oh here, I'll get it." "I have to do it." "I don't want anyone else touching my product." "Okay, here."

When I shell out my hard earnes $$ I expect what I buy to be in good shape.

I grabbed a copy of Mystic River at Hollywood Vide previously viewed. Before I even got out to the car I noticed that the back of the dvd art was all torn up. I went right back in and asked for a replacement. The girl gave me a funny look and asked the guy next to her if I could have a replacement. He just looked at her and said "I don't blame the guy for wanting a copy in good shpe! Of course he can switch."

So what are you saying, having nice cover art is a "guy thing"?

Yeah - the 'pull' ones (that contain the Title) are definitely worse than the other one. The other ones you can pull off in one clean motion. The 'pull' ones never come off easily.
