Last I checked, this is a capitalist society. If you don't want to pay for something, then don't. However, don't whine and complain (not that you were the only one) when you don't get certain perks that come with the paying subscription.

i paid $40 for it. very worth it in my opinion. as far as advertising, i don't see any. that's one of the perks of being a member. you people should just relax otherwise you're going to die much earlier.

If I'm not a big enough fan to pay?! for advertising? It shouldn't matter to me?
First of all, Lucas does not get the money you pay for Hyperspace. The official Star Wars site runs itself and pays for itself. It's not run by Lucas. The money goes to the website to pay for expenses and keep itself running. It's hardly the first website to charge for privileged material. There are millions of websites that charge for certain aspects of content, and the vast majority charge a lot more than the $20/year Hyperspace costs. It's been well worth the money I've paid.
Last time I checked it was also a country that allows discussion. Its fair to criticisize.
For what it's worth, most of the stuff on Hyperspace was not available for Episode I and II. Most of the HS material is newly created material, just for the service. About the only thing that was available for the first two films was webdocs. HS members get to see it first, but they still become available to non-HS members eventually.

EDIT: You'd think that the DVD release of the most popular sci-fi movie series would be accessible to the general freakin' PUBLIC and not just to the paying members. Boggles the mind sometimes.

Edited: I also think it is crazy how many senior and platinum members are coming out on the attack. The OP was just relaying some information. Talk about shooting the messenger!
For $40 you get access to the exclusive HS content and a sub to the magazine. You'll also get breaks on conventions and collectibles. It is for the die-hard fan and collector. I'm not saying you aren't a die hard fan if you don't have it, just that casual fans would definitely have no reason to get it.
The trailer shows some classic lines, mentions that the films have been restored frame by frame, and they make a big deal out of the DD5.1 EX remastering. They also plug the 4th disc's doc, showing clips of Harrison and others. There is even a bit with Peter Jackson talking about the OT. They plug the XBox demo, trailers, tv spots stills galleries and the EPK E3 stuff, showing some blue screen Ewan and Hayden fighting, and a glimpse of the DV helmet. None of the hotly debated scenes were shown and I saw nothing new. The explosions of both Death Stars were shown and it was the SE versions.
Would I pay the $40 for this? No. I paid for my membership for the other perks.

Must non-hyperspace members bitch about not having hyperspace in every single thread relevant to starwars.com? If you want to see the stuff on hyperspace that badly, then pay for the service. If you don't care that much about seeing it, then don't pay for it. But please stop bitching at those of us who have i
Are we coming out on attack? No, I was just making a fun little zinger that you have to pay to see advertising. So that inevitably led to the "we are getting more for than advertising" defense from ya'll.

This DVD release is the defining moment in DVD for me and other Star Wars fans.
To me, the release of these movies legitimizes the DVD format, in the same way that the first release of The Beatles albums to CD legitimized that format.
DVD HAS FINALLY ARRIVED!!
I purchased my first DVD player in November 1998, and I've been waiting for the release of these films to this format ever since. I remember when I purchased the player, there were three main franchises that I was interested in:
Star Wars - No DVD's were available of *any* of the Star Wars movies in November '98. TPM was finally made available to the format in November 2001; over a year and a half after the infamous 04/04/2000 release of the movie to VHS, VHS Widescreen, and overseas LD and VCD. In April 2000 (almost three years into the format) DVD didn't exist as far as LucasFilms was concerned.
Star Trek - In November, 1998 the only Star Trek movie you could purchase was the bare bones release of Star Trek: First Contact. Of course, now there's quite literally more Star Trek being pumped out than we can afford!
Disney Animateds - In November 1998 only the Beauty and the Beast:Christmas Special was available on DVD. It would be October 1999 before any of the Classic Disney Animateds would appear on the format. We're still waiting for Bambi, Cinderella, and Aladdin.
So ... It's been a long journey ... but the light is at the end of the tunnel!!
Of course, it's still a *big blow* to the format that the original, unaltered, 1977 Star Wars film remains available only on VHS, VHS Widescreen, and LD. If we don't get this movie in 2007 (for the 30th Anniversary) then DVD will never have fulfilled its potential.
And for those that scoff at this notion: Remember that with a format like this it's all about the software. The best DVD player in the world is worthless if the software that you want and need is not available to be played on it.

And since when does being a Platinum Member mean I can't get a little miffed at something I consider more or less rude?
I'm not writing angry emails to Lucasfilm telling him he's "teh suxor!1!" or anything like that, I'm just expressing an opinion. Last I heard, that's what this board is for.
And maybe PJ being on there will help heal some of the rift between the fans.

As far as I know there's rules of etiquette here on these forums and bashing Hyperspace or the Star Wars website is not the topic of this particular thread.
Thanks to packaok for the heads up on the trailer. I will go and see it.

Anyone notice the Vader prototype had the upper-chest /shoulders of the suit from Empire? Didn't the ANH suit have cloth going down the sides, instead of the chest/shoulders being one piece? Hmmm...

they don't show a single altered scene, not even ones we've already seen from the SE's

The trailer says nothing about new scenes or newly changed scenes...if there are any, Lucasfilm wants to keep it as a surprise.
Peter Jackson gets a good 5 seconds of this trailer...it's almost as if Lucas wants to say to LOTR fans, "you see...Peter likes my movies, why don't you?!"
The main documentary is called "Empire of Dreams", which for some reason I found funny and a little immodest.
The Harrison Ford comments in the documentary are definitely brand-new...you can tell from the amount of gray in Harrison's hair.
BTW, I only paid $5 for my Hyperspace membership a year ago...it runs out in a month, so I won't be renewing - but I know there are a lot of other fans who got a year's access for $5.

Why do so many people seem to feel like you have to either like "Lord of the Rings" OR "Star Wars"? I happen to LOVE them both immensely. By the way, not only is Peter Jackson a Star Wars fan, but Lucas is a LOTR fan. Lucasfilm helped Jackson out a great deal when he was working on the movies. So I will be buying both the Star Wars Trilogy AND the LOTR Extended Edition.'
Also, I appreciate the original poster for the information so that those who ARE interested can check it out, and so that those are who ARE NOT interested can have something new to bitch about.

Seriously though, lay off the guy, if you think Hyperspace is a rip I agree with you, but he's just trying to relay some info.
