Hmm, I was going to wait for the EE, but this seems like it will be loaded. I don't usually double dip, so the EE will have to be just freaking SPECTACULAR for me to consider.

I'm also wondering what else they could add to this. This set is definitely loaded, and I don't think I'd be too interested in an extended version that just has more character development.

I think I'll wait and see another region (Japan or Korea most likely will) give this flick DTS.

I enjoyed the movie in the theatres and I'll gladly buy the DVD even with an Extended Edition coming in the foreseeable future.

The movie is good, the cover is sweet and the two commentaries with all of the principal people is the icing in the cake.

You know, I'm starting to wonder about an extended release. We heard the same talk about Daredevil and Resident Evil and neither have happened yet. Pure speculation here, but if the new editions of Underworld and Pitch Black sell poorly, I wonder how long the studios will allow redone versions of SE discs to be made as it costs at least some amount of money to produce and probably hurts sales of the initial versions. It's one thing if you're talking about LOTR, it's quite another when you're dealing with minimally successful comic book movie adaptations.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Nowadays, the word "Special Edition" and "Limited Edition" are meaningless since every studio seems to use it for their new releases.

This could be one of this year's best DVDs.

well Daredevil it seems was pushed back. The new pitch black unrated DVD is the same as the old onw, just new packaging and extras to promote the chronicles of Riddick.

Id put my money on some form of Resident Evil DVD before the sequal as well.

And yeah, if Columbia/screen gems/whatever deemed Underworld worthy of an extended DVD, I wouldnt worry about Hellboy.....hopefully....

Del Toro posted an update on the HB board. He's finished the ADR work on the extended cut to be released in November.

You can now read our fully detailed review of Hellboy Special Edition here.

Snippet:
Columbia TriStar's Special Edition DVD is a must for all fans of film and students of the filmmaking process. The documentary alone is worth the purchase price, and gets the set a well-deserved A+ for extras. Some of the other extras seem a little unnecessary, but none should be missed, as when combined, they will tell you just about everything you need to know about the making of this film.

Hellboy's technical presentation is also superb. While the video transfer doesn't quite match Columbia's recent track record, it's still better than most; and the soundtrack will blast the wax from your ears. All in all, this is a highly recommended purchase.

I have a feeling that I would be double dipping on this one.

Anyway, to the upcoming 2-disc SE

Looks good so far. I'm sure we won't be disappointed as Guillermo del Toro is as big a proponent of the dvd format as Peter Jackson is. Now I'm just dying to get my hands on the extended cut later this year!

Both Hellboy and Devil's Backbone discs were excellent. The picture quality on the SE of Devil's Backbone is much improved.

I have heard that the specs for the Extended Edition is barebones - it is a single disc edition housing just the extended cut of the film. That is why the original edition is so packed.

We finally have official confirmation that Guillermo Del Torro's HellBoy will be released with additional footage, this year, and quite a bit before November 30th.

We know for certain that the HellBoy Director's Cut DVD set will contain an all-new cut of the movie, a new audio commentary and an exclusive Excerpt From The Diary Of Grigori Rasputin.

A HellBoy DVD Gift Set will be released on the same day and will include the Director's Cut DVD and an exclusive limited edition HellBoy figurine.
More details, including the cover art, here.

The DigitalBits has this quote from Del Toro about the Director's Cut set:

"DVD (Director's cut): Comes out in November (3 discs) all the same extras (minus commentary track original) but with an extra disc full of features. The special box edition will have a Sideshow Hellboy mini-bust. This disc has my preferred cut (15 extra minutes but they go a long way in terms of story and character) and a new commentary track that I feel very happy with."

It would seem that there is no need to double dip unless you simply must have the theatrical cut.
