I tried to guilt Best Buy into giving me the Extreme DVD for $10, since I asked about the price and no one mentioned the 2 for $20 deal. That didn't work, so I just returned it for a refund.
As I left I saw one of those aisle islands and saw T2 there, too - in the metal case! All the ones on the DVD shelves were cardboard, but they DID have the metal cased ones, too. Again, I had asked, and no one mentioned it.
I might get it off DD-DVD. Not sure if I'm that interested.

Which cut is on the Extreme version? The Ultimate has three different versions through seamless branching and of the three I prefer the longest hidden version.

The "Extreme" edition has the theatrical version and the "Director's Cut" version...it doesnt include the hidden version from the Ultimate collection.
I forget, off-hand, what the disc's equivalent of "Find the White Rabbit" is, but there's something that pops on screen, while watching, and if you click that during the final scene, you'll see the alternate ending. It's not seamless, though, there's a definite delay.
Many of the features which were on the old Ultimate edition are available in this way on the Extreme, it's just not good for navigation.
Personally, I think you need both. The Ultimate has amazing extras, including a commentary track which includes Arnold (it's cobbled together from interviews, though, not scene specific); the Extreme is great, though, because Cameron gives a great commentary and because the movie looks amazing. The extras are kinda crap, although I, for one, dug seeing Peter Jackson gush about 'T2'.

The EE is one of the better upgrades you can make. The video quality is far above the UE; the transfer is just about reference quality. I too am in the camp that thinks the DD 5.1 tracks sounds better than the DTS track. It seems to have better bass; clarity/highs are about equal.
As far extras, the UE's are better. However, that is never a deciding factor for me.
