T2: Extreme vs Ultimate?

Could someone explain the differences between the "Extreme" and the "Ultimate" versions of Terminator 2?

I just picked up the "Extreme" version tonight. I was enticed by the price at Best Buy - $14.99. Only after I got home did I realize the yellow sticker was covering up the original price of $13.99. Damn them! ;)

I went to read the reviews, but it looks like they refer to the "Ultimate" edition, not this one.

Any info appreciated.

I guess you would be bummed to find out it has been only $10 at many places lately.

It has a different transfer and totally different extras. I have read many picked up both, but I'm cool with Ultimate only.

Darkfriend 04-13-04 07:26 PM

I'm fine with the Ultimate edition. I also knew the "Extreme" edition wouldn't feature Ahnold doing crazy stunts on a skateboard...

bboisvert 04-13-04 07:35 PM

Yeah, you got ripped on that price. ;) You can get it for $10.63 shipped, with no tax from DDD.

The Extreme edition that you have contains the best picture quality of the 2 sets. And it also has some cool extras.

The advantage of the Ultimate edition is that all of the extras (and there are a TON of them) are unique to that edition.

Personally, I have both...

Altimus --

You do know that T2 Extreme is apart of the 2 for $20 sale this week at BB?

Also it's geared for "HD" if you play it on a PC.

MasterCXtreme 04-13-04 07:41 PM

I started a thread about this awhile ago, what I found was.....

For extras... get Ultimate
For transfer... get Extreme
Can't make up your mind... get both.

I haven't gotten either of them yet, but if I had to choose, I'd take Ultimate.

Altimus Prime 04-13-04 07:42 PM

Yup, just saw on Deep Discount it's $10.63. Total.

Now I gotta wonder - do I be cheap and return this to Best Buy and buy it from DD? I haven't opened it yet.

According to the DD description, theirs is in the metal case. Best Buy only had it in cardboard cases. But I read that the metal case often damages the keepcase inside.

AND the 2 for $20 deal?!?? Now I gotta do something. I even asked about the price - because of the signage, I thought $14.99 was some special markdown - and NO ONE mentioned the 2 for $20 deal.

But of the ones they offer, I don't really want any of the others. Already got Breakfast Club. Maybe Dead Poets. Maybe Ice Age. No other "must haves" for me in there.

Damn them!

I noticed my Best Buy had both metal and cardboard cases. I was going to pick it up today, but all the metal cases looked rewrapped and they all had scratches and dents.

For $10, you can't go wrong with Road to Perdition.

do you know if the Extreme version Best Buy is offering in their "2 for 20" ad this week is the metal cover version?

Cornelius1047 04-13-04 09:23 PM

Interesting. I haven't noticed a non-metal version cover. I commented on the "Limited Edition" sticker recently while stocking them at my Best Buy cuz of this. I'll have to look again tomorrow.

^^^No, I noticed my Wal Mart is now selling a cardboard cover version of the Extreme Edition.

However, I got the metal cover, and fortunately, I got my off without very much damage at all, maybe just a little tear or "pinch" of the cover-art cover plastic.

Do either of them have the Guns N' Roses video for "You Could Be Mine" on the dvd...

chipmac 04-13-04 10:09 PM

Which cut is on the Extreme version? The Ultimate has three different versions through seamless branching and of the three I prefer the longest hidden version. If the Extreme version has that one on it I might just get it for $10.

UAIOE 04-13-04 10:16 PM

The "Extreme" edition has the theatrical version and the "Director's Cut" version...it doesnt include the hidden version from the Ultimate collection.

Personally, I own both. Ultimate for the extras, "Extreme" for the commentary (which i thought was pretty good).

I recently picked this up from DDD for $10.63. Disk 1 has the director's cut as well as the theatrical cut, which is accessible via an easter egg. Disk 2 has a High Definition Windows Media version of the theatrical cut. Speaking of the WMP version, has anyone been able to play it on their PC at a watchable frame rate? I have a 1.4 Ghz with 512 MB RAM and it stutters along....

Michael Corvin 04-13-04 10:19 PM

I own both, but I would stick with the Extreme for picture quality. I haven't watched a lick of extras on the Ultimate. What are you going to watch more often, the movie? or the features?

The Ultimate Edition does not. I don't know about the Extreme Edition...

I have a 3 GHz w/512 MB RAM, haven't tried it, but I haven't installed the DVD software that comes with the discs, what's the name? Can't think of it right now. And will it run on WM XP edition or does it require WM v9?

Nope, it doesn't either :grunt:

Is there any place that still sells the Ultimate edition?

Mountain Biker 04-13-04 11:36 PM

The UE also features a nice DTS track, not sure about the Extreme.

Another reason to own both of them is the DTS track on the Ultimate Edition. The DD 5.1 EX track on the Extreme DVD is nice, but I prefer the DTS audio.

I picked up my UE used at Saturday Matinee. The first disc had a few scratches on it. But the extras disc was mint.

I have both versions, but haven't really watched the UE version (since its scratched)

Living Dead 04-14-04 01:12 AM

I had to hunt through about 2 dozen Extreme DVD's when they first came out to find one that wasn't scratched to hell. They damage VERY easily.

But the main differnece is extras. Extreme edition has virtually nothing, I bought it for the commentary track. I think of it more as a companion to the Ultimate Edition.
