Pfft. Heretic. What else is there to talk about on a DVD TALK FORUM?

No. I'm saying that I'm not going to talk about my other interests or personal life in a DVD TALK forum. The operative word in that sentence was DVD. Why would you join a DVD forum, which is targeted towards a certain subject, and then complain when people talk about *gasp* DVDs?

But since you've posted over three-thousand messages here in less than four years, maybe it did not seem excessive to you.

I never posted about asking a receptionist at the Criterion Collection/Company for a date.
My only comment in this thread was directed to you because you seemed to imply that just because someone talks about DVDs in a DVD TALK forum that he has no other interests and nothing else going on in his life.
That argument is specious - it is after all a DVD forum - what else would you expect people to talk about here?
In any case, no, I didn't think any of the posts here were excessive other than yours. If you aren't interested in a topic you should probably not read it. There's no compulsion to post - posting is optional. If you can't contribute to a discussion that other people are enjoying, hey, why not take a step back, check out some other threads, and enjoy yourself.
It's not worth getting worked-up over.
I happen to find the first page of this thread to be very funny, but I can see how someone new to the boards may find it a bit creepy. I think the original post as well as the follow-ups have all been in good fun.
It reminds me of those posts where DVD fans - who are fans of the format as well as the content - will discuss minute details of a release, and then some idiot will pop their head in and call everyone else a geek/nerd/obsessive weirdo/whatever because after all, "It's all about the movies."
But most of the people who post here regularly enjoy both film AND DVD as a home video format. We're generally both movie AND DVD enthusiasts.
If it's only about the movie, why not rent the VHS tape, or go see it as it was meant to be seen, in a movie theatre. Heck, you could always wait until it's on cable if you just want to see the film.
In any case, trying to convince someone who enjoys something that they shouldn't enjoy it is a futile effort.
And ProfessorEcho - quite frankly, I think you're better than that.

ProfessorEcho . . . this group is definately one that takes DVD's and films in general, fairly seriously. For many people here, there is a true appreciation for film and its proper presentation. Criterion has offered a more-than-impressive collection of films on DVD, highlighting excellence in various aspects of film and, therefore, has gained a high level of respect from a majority of the people in this forum. This is easily comparable to other hobbies and interests (e.g., architects appreciating Frank Lloyd Wright and being excited about visiting on of his works, "space buffs" getting excited about going to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum , etc.)
At the same time, we all tend to 1) have a pretty decent sense of humor in general and 2) have a pretty good sense of humor regarding our interest in films and DVD's. We are sarcastic and, frankly, somewhat nerdy (don't try to deny it, guys
), but we all like to have fun and joke around. That is, for the most part, what has gone on in his thread.
If you go into the threads with that mindset, not only will you understand the threads and this group better, but you'll also probably have a better time.

Your endless argument about my apparent aversion to reading or writing about DVDs on a DVD Message Board is the one that's specious. I said that I felt that the posts on this thread were excessive and went beyond fanaticism over a hobby, something you wouldn't and perhaps SHOULDN'T encounter even on a DVD message board. I NEVER said I didn't think people shouldn't talk about DVDs! To me this thread went over the line of just talking DVDs, but that's my opinion and was stated as such. I was commenting on the lengths some people take it to and that I think they should have more in their lives besides DVDs, not that they should post about other things. It was a generalization, I grant you that, but to me there was truth to it.
I would also be very interested to learn just how many people on this thread were, in fact, just kidding and having fun. I admit I may have missed the joke, but I've known too many "hobbyists" who make such rabid comments without a smile on their face.
Tamelyn, your message was the first one to deal with this in an adult way, including even my own juvenile retorts scattered throughout. I appreciate your input very much. However, as an architecture buff in general and FLW fan in particular, I have to say that there is no way to compare visiting a Wright designed structure to that of an office for a DVD company. The more correct comparison would be with the DVD or film itself. Just because Criterion makes good DVDs is no reason to get excited by seeing their BUSINESS OFFICES, for God's sakes!
Since we all do indeed CHOOSE what to post and where to post and what to read on a post, I am done with this particular thread and won't return, having learned enough positive and negative things from it to last me until the next one that piques my scorn.

Yeah, my post count would be a lot higher if I visited the Other forum more - those people just post gibberish and stuff about each others' mothers.

It's my goal in life to marry a woman who works for Criterion. I would get all the pre-release promos...not to mention the possibility of sneaking into the office after hours and having sex surrounded by piles of Criterions!

Echo, I agree with you entirely honey. But these folks are so deep into DVD collecting that you must never ever touch the official Third Rail of the DVDTalk forum: CRITERION.
I've had a lot of fun since joining this forum — and been told by various members to "just leave," and "God forbid you would contribute something useful," and "you're a thief" among other nasty replies — and the one conclusion I have arrived at is that there are some people on this forum who suffer a tragic absence of humor. Whether or not DVD collecting is their substitute for having a life is something I'll let powers greater than myself be a judge of; but criticize DVD collecting in any way on this forum — which exists in large part for the glorification of DVD products and technology — will probably be hurtful to some, and doubtless summon the High Dudgeon of the forum at large.

Lying and stealing isn't really a grey issue when it comes to tangible things - you either have received your order or you haven't. If you have and you say that you haven't you're a liar. If you then get your money back without sending back the merchandise you're a thief.

This is a forum for DVD collectors - for people who generally ENJOY collecting DVDs.
As I've said many times on these fora, trying to convince someone that they don't or shouldn't enjoy something that they already enjoy is futile. Everyone who posts on here is either a DVD collector or a DVD enthusiast (except for those few insane members that don't buy DVDs but still enjoy conversing with people who do).
So from anyone who posts here a lot, complaining about the "other" DVD collectors is a little silly. "You collect more than me, so there must be something wrong with you!"
