I don't have an answer for that...
BUT I was going to just get the EE but opted to get both and then wait for the mega box set on super-duper-uber-XDTV that comes out in 2020.
Do you have the specs for that uber set?

New Line is also beginning work on a trilogy box set, which the studio hopes to release in two to three years for those who prefer to buy all the films at once; however, it is unlikely the set will include any new material.
"What we're going to do with both theatrical and extended versions when we come out with Return of the King is provide a sleeve that will fit all three versions in there to be able to bind it altogether…but there won't be any added-value material [in the trilogy box set]," says Lasorsa. "We don't want to create any buyer's remorse."

If that's right, I'm very excited. My only question is whether the special sleeve will be included with the gift set version of the EE (Though I really don't need a box for the EEs, but I'll still buy it if it's available).

You understand it correctly. When the Theatrical and Extended DVDs are released this year, each will come with a sleeve (box), allowing owners of the previous movies to create their own box set.
And, in two to three years, there will be another "trilogy box set" released that may or may not contain additional material, but will most likely be packaged differently than anything we have today.
Oh, and I will be buying both this year, AND the trilogy box set when it comes out. I'm such an LOTR geek...

March 02, 2004 - Lots of happenings surrounding The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King since its Oscar sweep. For starters, it will be returning (sorry) to more than 2,000 theaters next weekend for one last attempt to boost the box office take, which already stands at $364.1 million domestically.
Now for the bigger news. There was a party thrown by TheOneRing.net and the man of the hour Peter Jackson was there. The Digital Bits was the first to carry this blurb regarding the extended edition and a high-definition transfer of the movies.
"I'm sure most of you have heard me blabbing off in the past few weeks but we've just finished the extended cut of the DVD. I finished the edit before I came over here - these poor bastards at Weta have got another 350 effects shots to do! They're well on the way. Elijah's seen the extended cut. New Line have announced some box set that's supposed to be coming out which I didn't know anything about. When I've done King Kong I'd like to do a proper box set and we've got a whole bunch of material - not of the movie but we've got a whole lot of bloopers out there! When King Kong's out the way I'd like to do a really high definition version with the best possible picture quality."
Now, this is interesting because New Line hasn't announced any box set. Last week we had a story that first ran on DVDAnswers, a U.K.-based site, of an upcoming toy faire in Europe where New Line made mention of a LotR box set for 2005. But at this point we haven't heard any word. New Line has an announcement planned for Monday regarding RotK, and who knows, we may get more information on a box set.
His timing on a high definition transfer for the films would be perfect. King Kong isn't due until 2005, so figure with post-filming work, such as DVD prep, by the time he can turn his sights on a high-def LotR release it would be 2006, which is when HD-DVD should be hitting the market. Now that would be the tail wagging the dog for HD-DVD.
Now for the not so good news. The rumor mill regarding the RotK DVD releases has been the two-disc release in May and the extended edition around August. Well, scratch that. Here's a Jackson comment from the OneRing party regarding a prank played on Elijah Wood.
"…It's just something that we are going to put on the DVD in November for the extended Return of the King…"
So it looks like no early release for RotK.

That's a very old quote. That story mentions that the theatrical won't be released in May, too, even though there's been an official press release saying that it's coming out earlier.
Both Video Business and Video Store magazine quote Weta as saying that the Theatrical release is coming out in May, and the EE in September - both pushed up.
From the Digital Bits' rumor mill (which correctly predicted the May 25th release date a full month in advance):
They cite the Video Business article as well.

This falls in the category of rumor, because New Line has yet to officially announce the title. But we've heard from a number of retailers, indicating that they've been told by the studio to expect the theatrical version of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on May 25th. This confirms what we've been hearing as well.
This is also supported by a recent Video Business article (in the Feb. 2 issue), in which both director Peter Jackson and various retail sources are said to have confirmed that the theatrical version of the film will be released in May, and that the extended edition would follow in September. According to recent interviews by Jackson, the longer version reportedly clocks in at 4 hours and 10 minutes. New Line also reportedly says they won't announce the title until after the Oscars at the end of this month.

Actually, the quote was from an after-Oscar party, so it's not an old quote. Also, here is a direct quote from the Digital Bits story that was mentioned in the DVD.IGN article, "The extended DVD is obviously for Return of the King (due in November), while the box set he's talking about would feature the entire Rings trilogy".
Don't get me wrong, I'm dying for the EE to come in August, I just have to assume the director knows when his own movie is coming out on dvd. Besides, for some reason, studios seem to think that by holding on to big releases like this until November, it will sell better, due to the holidays.

Yeah, I guess that's why Star Wars is coming out in November.
And Aladdin.

There has been some scuttlebutt that the EE may not arrive until next year. I hope it's not true! Reasons given were WETA and Jackson's big focus now being on King Kong. However the editing of the EE is done and all that remains is some more VFX and post work, at least for the feature, so again, hoping this info is baseless.

Yeah, I know, I'm quoting myself, but I wanted to post an image I found through another site of the DVD Trilogy Box. If the information we have been given is correct, this is what you will be able to get with your Theatrical ROTK DVD, to make your trilogy box set.

It might not be the ultimate "überset" mentioned in yesterday's post, but you WILL be able to buy the complete theatrical edition of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy as a 6-disc DVD set from New Line on May 25th (SRP $89.98).

A copy of the actual DVD has somehow leaked to the internet I guess. Its got the opening menus, Chapter selection, 5.1 EX and 2.0. It looks really good.
It should tide me over until the EE comes out.
I've made some menu captures of the DVD, but I don't have anywhere to upload them to.
