I don't care how much data they have - it wouldn't take 5 days to transfer it to a new hard drive unless they were moving it over a floppy at a time.

Obviously they are having money problems - there's no technical reason they should be down for this long - unless they're using a cut-rate ISP. But even then, that signals money problems.
No, this is not obvious. My personal view is that Intervocative is using this as a reason to do a major server and ISP upgrade. They will probably be back better than ever. After all, if they have to be down, why not make the most of it?

I know nothing about Intervocative's business - but I do know the web hosting business - and if I couldn't get one of my customers back online within a few hours - 24 at MOST if there was a fire in the datacenter or something - I'd be out of business.

Since I can't imagine them hiring an ISP/hosting provider that incompetent, the only explanation is that they can't afford hosting and got shut off - or something *did* fail, and they can't afford to pay for another box to be set up elsewhere in the meantime.

Or worse, that they had all of their eggs in one basket (i.e. couldn't afford a reliable backup) and now are struggling to get the data off of the failed hardware.

My point wasn't that DVD Profiler is the company's primary business - my point is that they're in serious trouble if they can't get a web server back up in a day. This IS a problem that you can throw money at to fix.

And if DVD Profiler isn't their primary source of revenue, why does their Intervocative.com company web site only mention that DVD Profiler is unavailable? Why no mention of their other business/products?

It is my understanding that the company has only one product.

If not, feel free to fill us in.

How are you reading anything on Intervocative's website? I can't pull it up. Do you have a URL?

By the way, it is self-evident that DVD Profiler is not their only product. It is a FREE product. Where do you think their money comes from? It certainly isn't from a free product.

That is not what comes up if one is using Netscape 7.1 as a browser. I tried it using Internet Explorer 6 and saw that message.

Still waiting... by the way how many of you have paid the $25 to use the DVDProfiler upgrade w/out advertisement and improved images?

I did quite a while ago and I never regretted doing so. I hope they either put up a notice as to what the problem is, or email paid members.
They should do something, maybe put a note up on DVDTalk.

I paid $25 to use DVDProfiler without the ads about 6 months ago. I really like DVD Profiler. I hope they don't go out of business and their server can come back up so I can use it again.

I paid for the program as well. By the way, don't forget that the Premium version also allows downloads of Betas and unlimited uploads.

I also paid my $25 dues about 4 months ago after trying the free version out. I felt it was worth it, but would like to see more enhancements like the "favorite director, favorite actor," etc. which shows how many DVDs you have by each movie artist. I think Guzzelfish does that, right?

Wow, self-evident, huh? You can determine how many products a company makes through your own divining?

Okay, I own a company called Plagiarist Publications. How many products does it offer? It should be self-evident, no?

Let's see, why would I think that Intervocative sells no other products than DVD Profiler... Oh yeah, it's the only product listed on their company website, Intervocative.com.

Silly me.

And DVD Profiler isn't free. Maybe you're thinking of a different product. Registering the product costs $25 - otherwise it's advertising supported (meaning it's not you, but the advertiser is paying for it).

So by your reckoning, NBC must be bankrupt because they broadcast "Friends" for "free." Surely you can't be this naïve about how business works, so you must be playing the fool.

Don't come here looking for an argument, especially if you're just going to take ridiculous stances in order to try to start one.

I believe the topic of the thread is that DVD Profiler is down. Some of us were speculating about the reason for it being down for six days now, which is a very long time on the web.

Someone screwed the pooch and is still cuddling with it.

I love that "We're temporarily down for maintenance. Please check back in a few minutes."

It's as if they aren't aware that they have had a massive problem. "Oh, don't worry gents - it's just a glitch. Be back in a quick!"

Unbelievable. If they're not back up soon I'm going to issue a chargeback for my $25.

Is that not a bit too quick to get pissed off? I know you must be angry that it's 4 days now and no dvdprofiler, I know I am, but come on - give it a few days more.
I'd say that they have multiple problems (incompetent and unhelpfull ISPs, hardware issues etc) and even though I do not know the amount of servers required for a site such as dvdprofiler but I think they have either troubles sourcing replacement hardware (crappy support contract or no contract at all?) or it's home-build stuff where no enterprise level support is applicable, definitely not 24/7. They could be also the target of a DDOS attack and are denying it, but that's unlikely.

However it would be nice if either they would mail at least the registered version owners or put up a super simple page stating their troubles and update every 12 hours or so. It's times like these where it pays off to go that extra mile and let know your customers what is happening.
Oh, and I paid my 25$ a week after I initially found dvdprofiler

I think it's time to post a new 'You know you're obsessed with DVDs when...' over on that thread.

Another Intervocative Product?

Seems that Intervocative DOES have another product called Media Sorter. I know nothing about it but it shows up in one of the results of a Google search of 'dvd profiler' as such - "InterVocative Software, LLC is the proud publisher of such software titles as DVD Profiler and Media Sorter."

sheesh you guys are such whiners, would you all like a little cheese to go with it. In 5 years I have seen the IVS website go down exactly twice, that's not a bad record. In fact the first time was when their IP moved from Baltimore to S Florida. Be patient they are working on it. BTW just how many of you people are active on the IVS forums or do you just come here to cry because the site went down.

Yes, self-evident is correct. DVD Profiler is free. No business survives on charity. The fact that Premium registration costs $25.00 is not a guarantee of funding. No business would operate on such a model. Further, no business could continue product improvements without funding. People don't work for free or because they hope to receive charity. You can be as sarcastic as you like while attempting to cover the fact that you are wrong. However, it remains self-evident that Intervocative could not continue to function without steady revenue from a marketed product.

The company issued an official statement on another web forum. Apparantly you are calling their spokesman a liar. That seems to be quite a leap of logic. The fact is that you don't know what happened other than a hardware failure. You have no idea how long that takes to fix because the specific nature of the failure was not mentioned. So, you are assuming that it is a problem with which you are familiar.
You are also assuming that fixing the problem is all that is being done.

That is just so silly. Being a sunshine soldier is hardly going to help. But then, I suppose that raging against a company which has provided a superior DVD database for free for five years and very good Premium service for just as long, makes sense to you. How exactly is kicking this company going to benefit you?

It's not Free (Freeware).

It's adware, software supported by ads, thus not free.

It's also shareware; software that is not free, softwre that is not supported by ads, has funtionality to remove ads and offer more fiunctionality to registered users.

Why do you keep insisting that it is free? It is obvious to everyone else that it is not. Ads are there to generate money. The allow you to remove ads that generate them money if you give them money by regestering the program.
