More reasonable would be to not be a smart-ass and just say "I don't get it. To what is this in reference?"

Jough: thank you for the explantion and for backing me up. And I am sorry if I have confused the member that expressed dissatisfaction with the tiny joke. I thought the reference was self-indicative, esp on this forum.

Right now, it's safe to say no one know what's going on. The only thing we can do is wait and hope the DVDProfiler guys can get it back up soon.

If any DVD profiler employee is reading, please be back soon. I love your software. I usually use your program at work to choose what to watch that night after driving home from work. Not having to connect to the internet to browse my collection ... priceless.

I'm on the skokie/chicago border - the village crossing mall: best buy, circuit city, costco, and walmart. I'm thinking of moving closer to deepdiscountdvd

I live in Munster now, but raised in Lake Forest and raised my young family on Ballard just behind Golf Mill, before the renovation. Check out Old Orchard you won't beleive it.

Randy,
I know the Old Orchard Mall all too well (so does my wallet
)
Looks like a lot of people from the Chicago area are hanging around here...In fact I met a DVDtalker in the Starbucks at Old Orchard(on the corner) back in 2000.
Now before we (I
) get accused that we are hijacking the thread.... I was just over at the Danish DVDforum...and there is a lot of disccusion going on there as well. People really are missing DVDPROFILER.
I am going to check what the French have to say about it in a few min...

Just found this posting at HTF. Take if FWIW.
"Hello all, I imagine this post may be deleted, but I cannot bear to keep my silence any longer. Let me just say for the record that I do not work for Intervocative Software nor do they have any knowledge or control of my actions here.
The IDSA has issued them a demand for all copyrighted images to be taken offline. Since this is a major part of their program, and the major reason individuals have been paying money for the "premium" version of their program, they have hired legal representation and are currently trying to figure out a way to bring their site and program back, and keep the value there for "premium" customers. If and when it does come back however, it will likely be without the "cover scans."
They have been keeping this under wraps but at this point it looks grim for users of the program who like to download the cover images. They will probably make this public very shortly anyway.
I apologize to Intervocative Software about my posting, but I do believe you have been doing your loyal customers an injustice with the misleading message that you currently have posted on your site, and they deserve to know what is happening."

This is more belieaveable, though not more desireable, than the hardware issue story. I don't know how credible this information is, so i'll wait and see.
I wonder if dvdaf and guzzle will be asked to do the same, but I hope not since the thumbnail pictures there are too small for anything else than simple identifications.
If intervocative is going to take out the cover serving, at least they should keep the feature in the client so we can always scan and store our own covers.

While I'm suspicious of their "official" reason for being down (just because it's so unlikely that they could possibly be this incompetent) the cover image thing isn't really an issue - the cover images are considered "promotional" material and isn't *as* protected as other intellectual property.
You can use cover images, heck, even a few stills from a film, in support of posting a movie review or writing about a film. It's protected under "fair use."
What's next? They ask Amazon.com to remove the cover images?

I guess the other differences between profiler and dvdaf/guzzle is exactly what the original htf pointed out: that the biggest value of paying $25 to intervocative is the cover scans. IDSA may be only going after them since in their minds, intervocative is making a profit from their copyrighted materials and does not pay the "protection money" to the movie industry. This is different than Amazon, who is making money for them.
