Does anyone here Buy DVD's at the mall?

Went to the mall the other day, went in to both FYE and Sam Goody. I couldnt believe it, virtually all their movies were $29.99!!!! I looked at some CD's, $19.99!!!

Ummmm Hello, how exactly do they sell these things for full price with a BB right across the street?

Are some people just unaware of DVD's and CD's being much lower at other stores, or are they just too lazy to go there?

And now you see why Sam Goody filed for bankruptcy this week.

Also note why Tower Records is on the brinks of Bankruptcy aswell.

The reason why some stores are around with such high prices (well really, the suggested retail price) is because they offer something else.. convience. People go to the mall and up intill recent years, a best buy or store like such weren't nearly as widespread as they once were. So you would kill all your "to do.." list off in one stop.

Best Buy and other big name low price dvd sellers can afford to do this because in the most cases, they buy shipments of thousand units from distributors at a cheaper price, not to mention even lowering it more to use them as loss leaders. A trick to get you in the doors in hopes that you also buy something else that they might slightly charge more then another store. All ways to make you buy.

Places like Best Buy can charge less for CD's and DVD's because they make so much money on other things they sell, such as car stereos and appliances. Tower Records and Sam Goody sell only media...media that gains them little to no margin.

I go to the Disney store quite often. Their prices are not worse than anywhere else.

I frequent Best Buy, Media Play, and Borders. Occasionally I'll stop in CC, but not too much anymore....

Every once in awhile I'll go into the FYE around here simply because they have some OOP titles (since they're so expensive in the first place nobody's buying them). Other than that, I steer clear.

Last time I went to the mall, I walked into Suncoast just to laugh at the manager, then show him the price of the same DVD online on my PDA for much cheaper, free ship and no tax. That was 6 months ago and that store is now closed down.

The only thing I need at the mall is clothes, and that's only once or twice a month maybe. I can go to other places for cheaper clothes.

the store The Wherehouse is in the mall near my house, so I only go there to check out their used DVDs. Suncoast I only go in to browse, I've probably only bought things from there once or twice, once during that 2 for 30 sale.

Unless it's something like Ed Wood, I never will buy anything from the mall except for clothing. Too damned expensive for me. Why waste my money at FYE when I can save a heap at Best Buy, Target or Circuit City.

I tend to buy new releases at Suncoast. They're usually pretty close to the price of the same disc at Best Buy or Circuit City, and at Suncoast (unlike Bets Buy or Circuit City) I get decent customer service. I'll pay more than MSRP before I give any more money to Best Buy.

I could never understand why these retail stores at the mall charge so much. Even when they have new releases "on sale," it is still more than what would be charged on-line or in chains like Best Buy, et. al. The only explanation I ever hear for the extra high prices is that they have problems with shoplifters. If outlets like Tower or Sam Goody expects to be in business much longer, they ought to be more competitive.

The only time I'd buy at the mall if it had some incentive (like those rebates Fye offers from time-to-time or those 20% off coupons for Borders) or if there was something OOP that would be prohibitively more expensive on Ebay.

It's mall psychology. Presumably, the belief is that young people are going to be hanging out there and will occasionally shop there, and they're the types of consumers who won't really be bothered to shop around for the best price. So they'll buy the new Beyonce CD for $16.99, instead of going to Best Buy and getting it for $11.99.

The only times I've bought anything at Suncoast, is either cheap Hammers from their discount shelves, and I also got "Vampire Hunter D" there for $9.99 the day after Christmas.

I'll generally only browse in Suncoast, and seldom actually buy anything.

I wonder the same thing about people who buy all their DVDs in stores like BB, CC, and Costco instead of shopping for the best price from an etailer or CH. "Are they just unaware that many titles can be had for considerably less online or are they just too lazy to shop online?"

I wonder the same thing about people who get frustrated because some particular DVD hasn't been released in R1, went OOP, or is not OAR, when a perfectly good version is available in another region. "Are they unaware of the benefits of region free DVD players or are they just too lazy to bother?"

Places in the mall are also good for more obscure titles that Best Buy may not have, but of course ordering online is still the easiest.

Now a place in the mall I do like buying DVDs from is stores like EB games or Gamestop. Almost every videogame store has a selection of used DVDs and you can find the occasional gem amongst the 200 copies of Godzilla 98 and The Dentist.

I have friends that work at FYE so I can usually get an employee discount, but most of the time that's no cheaper than the first week at Circuit City.

Disney Store is the only place in the mall that is worth a trip for DVDs (if you are into the free extras when you pre purchase).

Only thing worth getting at Suncoast/Sam Goody for me is the reduced action figures. I think the only dvd I've bought there has been a King of the Cage 4 dvd set for 10 bucks.

In smaller towns like mine, where you don't have a circuit city or best buy around. You have the option of Sam Goody or Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart isn't going to carry many titles, so they're forced into the other, unless you travel an hour and a half to a much bigger city.

Man, I don't think I've EVER purchased a DVD at the mall. Mainly because the prices are so sky high. It really is amazing how places like Suncoast and others stay in business with that high rent and tough competition by other retailers like Walmart, BB, etc.

I always buy my DVDs online, BB, Target or Walmart.

Edit: grammar correction

Well, I just bought the Ed Wood SE DVD at a Sam Goody's yesterday. So, I'm not too upset that I had to pay $29.99 for it.

I have spent quite a bit at Suncoast, but that is for two reasons:

A. I collect anime with LE items (pencil boards, etc.) that doesn't have separate UPCs, and Suncoast usually has what I am looking for, while Best Buy often doesn't, and I don't want to risk missing it by ordering online.

B. I joined their rewards program (basically $5 for every hundred dollars) and with double & triple point days, bonus points, etc., I get at least $10-15 dollars back on every hundred spent.

Many times, their anime is on sale during the first week of release, so I don't always pay full retail.

FYE in the mall was selling Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for $5.99 --- as well as some other horror movies at that price around Halloween time. Occasionally, they can surprise you.

Newer releases are just insanely priced. One would have to be just as insane as the price itself to pay $29.99 or $34.99. One exception being Ed Wood, of course.
