actually musicland is owned by sun capitol now and all 3 companies are now seperated companies...if sam goody goes down media play and suncoast may survive. Sun cap has also shown interest in aquiring Tower Records recently. Sun buys companies all the time to turn them around and after picking up over 30 dying companies they have not shut a single one down.

I pretty much buy everything online now with rare exceptions. I never buy DVD's or CD's in the mall, they are too expensive. I will occasionally buy stuff from Best Buy when they have a good sale but not that often anymore.

One nice thing about my local Borders is that they have a very nice foreign film section but I have only bought one DVD there ever as an impulse buy.

Not really, unless there are great deals. FYE has had some good MIR deals lately, but that's about it. As others have mentioned, they are good for finding rare/OOP stuff.

I have only bought one DVD at the mall from FYE. It was Dead Bang for $5.99. I went back A couple of months later and they raised the price to $12.99.

Fair point, but you can find obscure/non-mainstream stuff on the net for cheaper than at FYE/Sam Goody's etc. 99% of the time.

If you think this is expensive, you should try to shop in Japan...

This is total RIAA BS. A CD costs pennies to manufacture. The average price for a CD is outrageous when compared to the average price of a DVD. I do concede that an e-tailer has less overhead, but if the greedy record companies would agree to take less of a cut from retailers and get the avg price for CDs in the $8 or 9 range, they would see a huge increase in sales. The RIAA is run by a bunch of greedy old fools whose days are numbered.

I never buy my dvd's at the mall. If I go to a store it is usually either WalMart or Newbury Comics. Otherwise, it's Amazon or DDD for me.

Yes, Sun is the new owner. They purchased it for no cash last June. But the companies are not separated, not really. Musicland Group, Inc is still the owner of all 3 remaining stores. And they are still in the same offices, just with different ownership.

I haven't seen anything about a bankruptcy, though.

Amen. And the point of this thread was one B&M compared to another. The biggest gap is often there, not between discount B&Ms and etailers.
