I'm waiting to see if they show at my Borders too. I was hoping they'd arrive early. I told the store manager that if they arrived, I was buying one for myself. I felt that Disney's recall negated the street date. He agreed, but they're still not on the way. We'll have to see what happens.

Has there been any word on the reason for the recall?

How do you know they are defective and weren't recalled for another reason (such as copyright)? If you know something, spill the beans!

I also bought the Ed Wood DVD on Half.com from returnwarehouse yesterday, 1/26/04.
An FYI, according to half.com, my status has changed from "awaiting confirmation" to "packaging", this morning.
I have not received a confirmation e-mail as of yet, however.
Hopefully, this is good news for those of us who bought from returnwarehouse.

Besides what slop101 knows about this release (which I don't think is much), there are 3 reasons I can think of that would have pushed back the release date:
1.) Technical (bad discs, etc.)
2.) Legal (copyright, etc.)
3.) Promotional (Big Fish, PotC tie-ins, etc.)
Let's look at each of them:
1.) Technical
I find it rather easy to rule this out because I've seen posts talking about the disc playing just fine. If BV's quality control were to catch the problem, it would have done so before the discs were packaged and shipped. If the error was caught post-QC, they could have let the release slide and let consumers exchange the discs at a later date (a la Back to the Future).
2.) Legal
Well, this was probably the reason for the first release date slide, back in August of 2002, but no official word has been given. If it was the issue back then, it is doubtful (but possible) that another legal issue would tie it up again, especially a year and a half later.
3.) Promotional
This is my pick of the three, but it appears that there can be no "Big Fish" tie-in, because Burton was not nominated. Depp and Murray were nominated, and the winner will be announced Feb. 29th. If this was the case, I wonder if BV would simply send stickers out to the retailers or recall the discs and apply the stickers themselves. The reason I ask is that we've heard of some retailers being told to ship the discs back.
On a related note, my disc from Half.com (returnwarehouse) is now in "packaging!"
No email yet, but it's nice to see the status change!

An addendum to possible resons for the recall:
a) wouldn't a possible tie-in with Oscar® noms have been considered when the 2/3 release date was first set? It's not as if they would have forgotten about the Oscars until last week.
b) Rudolph Grey is on record as not liking some things that were said by a certain pair of siblings on the commentary. But that sort of thing is covered by those pogeybait commentary disclaimers, right? The only time I know of that a commentary with nasty comments about someone resulted in a recalled DVD was Media Blasters 2019: After The Fall of New York .
Also, not to be a bring-down, but the UK R2 disc is a big compromise. It is anamorphic, and has that featurette on transvestism that apparently isn't on the new recalled disc(you're not missing much), but it is a SINGLE LAYER DISC, and it shows. And you haven't heard the worst effects of a PAL speed-up until you've heard Bill Murray's voice on this disc.
