Any reviews for the extra discs?
I love the show, but don't know whether it is worth it. I'm not really interested in the yearbook, but am curious about what is on the two extra discs. |

I was doing some math, and purely mathematically speaking, this seems like a very good deal:
120 bucks [assuming no tax] for 18 'hour long' episodes. Due to commercials, they're probably actually about 44-48 minutes. Call it 45. 18x45=810 minutes. 13.5 hours. 120 dollars/13.5 hours = 60/6.25 = 30/3.125 = 15/1.56. So that's roughly equivalent to a movie DVD, which can be found in general around 15 bucks, for 1.5-2 hours of film. Very competitive [although this same comparison nets a greater benefit with some other tv series sets, like MTM or the Outer Limits]. And that doesn't even count the roughly 1,092 hours of extras, which aren't limited to just director commentaries like many releases. Nor the estimated value of the included yearbook. And, of course, the very concept of supporting a very good show, creators who listened to the fans, and worked their tails off to give the fans what they wanted--and then some. |

For an extra $70+ you are getting just the book and the two extra discs. I'm trying, but I can't justify paying that. |
That's very true. Anything more than 40-50 bucks for a complete season of a tv show, really takes some hard thinking for me. And 120 is definitely a decent chunk of change--at least with regular MSRP, you can always find someplace [DDD] who has got a good markdown. I justified it with the 'limited edition' feature--if there are only 25000 copies made, then I should be able to at least resell recoup some of my cost after watching everything. Plus, I like the yearbook thing, something tangible. I know the LE is for the 'hardcore fan', and certainly Judd Paul et al should be rewarded for their hard work, but I don't they'd mind if they sell millions of copies of the regular set : ).

For me, this is my favorite television series of all time, and with the original music intact, I'd be willing to pay $120 -- heck, much more than that -- for the episodes alone, even if there were no extras, inventive packaging, etc. I don't have any qualms about paying the full price just because this is a series that means a lot to me.

Reactions from people who've already received the 8-disc yearbook edition are posted on the bulletin board of the show's official website:

Oh yeah, you are right. Tax, not shipping.

Since I sent them an e-mail inquiring about my order, they sent me a personal reply stating that it's shipping tomorrow. woohoo!
BTW, Does anybody know if the 28-page booklet that comes with the regular set is also included with the collector's edition? Or is this material incorporated into the "yearbook"? |

Or is this material incorporated into the "yearbook"? One very nice part of the retail edition which isn't replicated in the deluxe edition is the inner packaging. The inner sleeve of the retail set features 5x7-1/2-inch close-up portraits of the primary cast members: Linda Cardellini and John Daley on the outside panels, then a portrait of one of the other freaks or geeks on the panel facing each of the six DVDs as you flip through the case. These same photos are included in the yearbook, but only at 1-1/2x2 inches, a la yearbook portraits. The enlargements are very striking and classy. |
Anyone who has this seeing any weird "stuttering effects" during certain scenes? This seems to affect certain players - I have a Sony and I see it occasionally. It's being discussed on the official forums a little bit in the thread by DonMayJr.

Got this in my hands today.... WOO HOO!
It's a very excellent set. I glanced at some of the pictures and watched the director's cut of the pilot. Great stuff. Like other said, it comes in the yellow envelope, but mine was in fine condition. My parents got to it while I was out at the movies, and they thought someone's yearbook was shipped to the wrong house! Anyways, great DVD set, I can't wait to get deeper into this. |
Today it was pouring rain so I asked Mrs. Pusser to keep an eye for the mailman. I was worried that he would either try to bend the envelope to fit the mailbox or would leave it in the rain instead of putting it between the front and screen doors. Several times we've found packages sitting in the rain instead of in the door. -ohbfrank-
So today she spots an 11X14 sized manilla envelope sitting in the rain. It was just as I described so she quickly brought it in. She opens it and it turned out be a birthday present for my daughter. No set yet. :( Maybe Wednesday! |
Originally posted by moviezzz Although, if you work out the math for the same episodes and commentaries to the non-special edition version (around $50 or less), it works out even better. For an extra $70+ you are getting just the book and the two extra discs. I'm trying, but I can't justify paying that. |
How much extra stuff is on the director's cut of the pilot? This DVD is so stacked, I didn't even realize there was a director's cut, and I already watched episode one yesterday.

Ohhhh ok then, then I guess the director's cut is simply the first episode. I thought it was the first episode and then there's another director's cut. Cool.
I thought this scene was originally in the debut of the pilot on NBC though...? |
Got my shipping notice!
 |
Received mine last night. Love the packaging. Watched the first two eps last night and the related deleted scenes. I like how they have some pre- and post-scene action (i.e. "ok set, camera, and action") before some of the scenes. It's fun to see the actors get into character and then do the whole scene.
If anyone hasn't seen this show, and is still considering picking this up, I highly recommend it. Even if you don't grab the Ultra-Yearbook Edition, this set is worth the $40-$50 for the episodes alone. |
