High school yearbooks are that much now? I got one for each year in high school, and I think they ranged from 20-30 bucks....of course, you could pay extra and get a plastic cover or name inscription...
At the risk of this thread being hijacked by "How much did YOUR yearbook cost?" type stuff, I paid something like $40 or $50 for my Jr. high ones, which were black and white except for a page or two which were color, and I paid well over $100 for my high school one, which was fully color and had lots and lots of pages in it. (Well, my parents paid, but you get my point.) I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was somewhere between 100 and 150.

Plus $5 (if memory serves, maybe it was $10) for the name inscription.

I don't mind the way the disks are stored--they're easy to get out, you don't have to worry about them getting stuck on the hubs and having to worry about getting them out,
That's a good point, actually. I personally find the annoyance of flipping through all the pages, and slipping them out, etc., to be not worth it, but not that you bring up the hub thing, I see how it at least *could* be worth keeping them in there.

I don't think it matters when you went to high school whether it was in the 80s, 90s or even now. That's what's so great about the show, aside from a few things here and there, everything's very relatable. One of the show's best traits and the only other show I can recall doing this that well was the Wonder Years.

Call me crazy, but I think some of this talk about the storage situation with the 8-disc set could be settled if a casing or something similar to what the 6-disc has, was offered to those who ordered the 8-disc set. Obviously they'd probably cost something, but as long as the price was reasonable, I wouldn't mind paying for them. Just an idea.

Why don't you guys just get blank dvd cases? You can get like 100 on ebay for $20.00. Real cheap and some store two DVD's per case.

I agree, but I found that the music/fashions/etc. were even more dead on since it was the same time I was in high school.

Actually, flipping through the yearbook hardly bothers me at all. Compared to other TV sets, where you have to pull it out of it's slipcase, unfold many flaps, while holding it all together and prying the discs out... the yearbook is a walk in the park.

I agree. I have no problem taking a disk out of the little plastic liner thing. Unlike, say, the Simpsons or Mary Tyler Moore sets. Plus, if the plastic bits of those sets break, you're out of luck, the whole case is 'ruined.'

And Al Padrino is right; while certainly the setting makes it feel more accurate to children of the 80's, I'm pretty sure high schools from almost any decade have had your bullies, your freaks, your geeks, your slackers, etc. They may have been called different things, and the things that make them outcast may be diferent, the social roles have probably always existed.

MasterCXtreme 04-02-04 05:52 PM

Yeah, I was thinking of The Simpsons specifically when I said it. I love The Simpsons but I find myself watching it less than the easier-to-get-to discs.

Anyways, I'm slowly working my way through this set. Watching episode, then with commentaries. I really enjoyed the "In Character" commentary on Tests & Brests. The actors do a really good job staying in character.

Al Padrino 04-02-04 07:27 PM

Out of curiosity, how long did it take for most of you guys to get yours? I'm aware that a lot of you pre-ordered it, but on average, how long should someone expect to wait?

jrsl76 04-02-04 07:30 PM

I know that everyone probably has this by now, but after a 4 day ordeal trying to get it from UPS, it is now in my hands. All I can say is that it is awesome, probably the single best packaging for a dvd set that I have seen. I don't usually like gimmicky oversized packages, but this is really wonderful and a lot of love obviously went into it. For anyone hesitating, I say go for it. You won't regret it.

I ordered mine Monday, shipped Tuesday, received it yesterday. Apart from it being packed solely in a padded envelope, [did arrive fine] I have absolutely no complaints about the processing/delivery speed.
I chose the free 'Rush' shipping, and I believe it shipped from somewhere in the Southeast; I'm in NC, so it didn't have to travel that far.

LBCrazyFool 04-02-04 07:57 PM

Ordered last week, shipped on Monday and got the set yesterday. I believe it shipped from GA, although I am not too sure.

I am curious as to how long it will take them to sell all 25,000. Any predictions?

Al Padrino 04-02-04 08:41 PM

How'd everyone have their's shipped? Rush or Standard? I broke down, ate my words, and ordered the Yearbook edition but forgot to change the method from Standard to Rush. Was hoping to have it by next weekend when my friend comes home from college since the two of us loved the show and watched it every week when it was still on. Oh well.

Mine was shipped Rush but it was defaulted at that, I didn't have to change it.

I ordered via standard (because it's easier for me to get USPS shipments than UPS shipments). I got it 2 days after shipping (GA to MA).

I've been going through the set this weekend... I can't stress enough how fantastic this set is. I have somewhere around 1000-1500 DVDs. I think this is possibly the best set I own. Fantastic show, highly rewatchable, and more extras than I'll can even handle at the moment. Kudos to everyone involved in putting this together. It's worth every penny.

THX7966 04-04-04 04:30 PM

I ordered mine way back in January when they first went on sale. I hadn't received it yet, so I checked my order status on the web site and it had been cancelled because of a problem with my CC. Nice of them to e-mail me and let me know. Now I have to re-order; if they run out before I get mine I will be very unhappy.

Same thing happened to me but they did send me an email.

Incidently, Judd has said on the freaksandgeeks.com website that if your order is cancelled for this reason and they were to run out, just email him and he'll be sure you get one. But chances are, you'll be fine ordering one right now.

To be fair to them, quite a few E-mail providers automatically filter out their mail as spam. I know there's a message on the website about how to set it up not to do that, but it hasn't worked for me, so it's quite possible that the problem was on your end (albeit not your specific mistake).

At any rate, I'm quite sure the aren't sold out yet.

1000-1500?? That's quite a large range!

I can't speak for him but he might be differentiating between titles & actual dvds. With multi disc sets (Quadrilogies, tv season sets, etc...) you could have in the neighborhood of 1,000 titles & close to 1,500 actual discs. Just a thought as to the possibility.

Alvis 04-04-04 09:07 PM

How "limited" is the le? I'd like to get it but I need to wait 'cause I don't have the cash right now.

Buford T Pusser 04-04-04 09:11 PM

I believe I read there will be 25,000.

Excellent review! I forwarded it to a few friends that are on the fence about their purchase.

Maybe I'll print out a copy to keep with the yearbook to validate its importance. ;)

I stopped counting around 850 or so, and that was a looooong time ago. ;) I used to be pretty anal about keeping track of the collection, and then I suddenly just stopped.

I'm actually afraid to do a count, and find that it is actually 2156 or something. ;) But, I'm moving to a new house soon, and that means unpacking, reorganizing, (maybe a tiny bit of weeding) and a perfect time to do a count.

Anyway, my point was just that I own a ton of titles and have seen all of the great ones. This set really leaves all others in the dust.

Alvis 04-05-04 07:45 AM

My wife has given me permission to purchase this. :) Actually, we discuss all large expenditures of money and I rely on her to keep me from going overboard. I was going to wait until Christmas for this, but I'm now afraid to wait that long. Excited about getting it, but $120, whew. Oh well, if it became necessary I probably could sell it for at least what I paid for it.

Brent L 04-05-04 07:45 PM

I sure hope that some of the auctions that I'm seeing on eBay right now for this set aren't any of you.

I'd be very disappointed in you!
