i am in us have region 1 sony player. i want the tartan 2 disc region 0 version..is there somewhere i can get it now? is that something someone can help me with? or send me the link? i opened some sites using the links, but get confused because some have Region 0 and Pal in description..aren't those a contradiction in formats? how can it be both?
and maybe post a pic of the one i need..

PAL and NTSC are broadcast standards for different parts of the world... way before DVD was even invented.

The regions (R1, R2...etc) were divided up for marketing purposes for DVDs. They apply to the type of player you have. Any player can play R0.

So, you can have a R2 PAL or R2 NTSC DVD.... R0 PAL or R0 NTSC DVD.

Hope this isn't too confusing....

thats the version I have. its a 2 disc and the transfer looks pretty good, my only gripe really with that version is that all the extras are not even dubbed in english, so at times it feels like the extras disc is just a waste.

Great, great info! I'll definitely be using what I've gleaned here, in addition to the links provided, for my BR purchase....

Its a bootleg
Official releases:

Common Bootlegs:

Go get the StarMax version from aznfilms or yesasia

edit: Yes it looks like the official Tartan UK release but that one is OOP and retailed for $30. How many OOP dvds do you know of that are half their retail price? (and thats not getting into the PAL/NTSC thing)

No, the subs are not bad at all. I have and put in just to make sure it works. If you heard/read/know nothing about the subs in the first place I don't think you would ever notice, except that it is in bold type. I can't verify the authentic nature of the actual words being spoken because I haven't seen any other versions, but if you haven't either then who cares.

Other than that the set is very much top grade. The packaging is on par if not better than anything in the states. The DTS sounds great and the movie is visually stunning as well. Of course I haven't gone through all the material, but I am sure it doesn't go down hill in terms of quality from the opening minutes.
Really great package and I am really glad I got it after shopping around.

Hey scott1598, I see you picked up the set. Sorry I didn't reply to directly to your question but you got the version I would've recommended.

Other than the VCD, it's the only version I've watched so I couldn't give you any more information than what others have said. I'm glad you're happy with the set

The complaints about the subs are for the new scenes, they were done by someone else and it shows apparently.

I'm pretty happy with the R0 tin, but there's some weird ghosting on the image, I think because of the PAL->NTSC conversion :/ It's a pretty solid set overall, though.

The subs on the Korean 2-Disc are pretty blurry. And as duz pointed out, the subs in the new scenes ain't perfect. Mistuko has a new name and one of Noriko's lines at the end of the film doesn't make sense.

I'll stick with my Region 3 from Universe until it gets a release with extra's that are either subbed or in English.

One scene in particular. On my Tartan disc (Chapter 2) Kitano says "Because of folks like Kuninobu here, this country...Is absoultely no good anymore. So the bigwigs got together and passed this law:"

But on my Starmax disc (Chapter 6) , the subs freeze for a moment during "this country's absolutley" and what appears onscreen after that is this:

"od anymore so the bigwigs got together and and passed th"

Nothing as bad as that occurs elsewhere.

Oh, and for some reason, the Starmax disc is missing a few subtitles towards the end of the movie.

(Spoilers, just in case)

Spoiler:
Boys #2 Iijima, #12 Yutaka, #19 Mimura, Dead.
4 to go

it appears to be the tartan uk ntsc 5.1 version, and is not a boot.

That's the right one? The Tartan NTSC 5.1 version? I hope so... just ordered it from Xploited!

My understanding is that this Tartan disc contains the original cut with the best subs and decent transfer, possibly the best transfer with the exception of the Starmax which has the newly-shot/added scenes (and different ending?). I inquired among a group of rabid BR fans, who recommended the Tartan NTSC/5.1 disc, and suggested that I not see the so-called "director's cut", at least until I'd seen the original. And, more than that, they were all seriously unimpressed by the added scenes (and different ending?) available on the Starmax disc (and others), and suggested it's a lesser film as a result.

Based on Rypro 525's suggestion (thanks Rypro) I got the Tartan version from amazon.co.uk as well for $29 and some change.

Here's the exact link:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000068LB5/

Picture, sound and subs are fantastic. Menus are understandable. I have no complaints.

I assumed it would take at least two weeks for the disc to arrive considering it was an import, but it got to my house within 5 days from the order date.

BTW, you don't need to register a new account for the .co.uk site; Your regular amazon.com account will be recognized: at least it was for me.
