Battle Royale - Which DVD version to get?

I really really want this movie - I have only seen it in a less-than-good vcd version.

There is about 50 version of it out there and I cant decide which one.

Can someone please hint me in the right direction?

I have to agree with Jack. The 2 disc UK import from Tartan Video is packed with many excellent extras. It was aimed at an English speaking market, the subtitles are superior to other imports. As for finding a region 0 version of the film, you may want to try Pokerindustries.com. They have a great selection of HK films from various regions.

i'm really sure you're wrong.

that cover u see up there is the korean version which isn't that bad as a DVD however only offers a DTS track and a Dolby 2.0 track. the english subtitles are atrociously hilarious, tho.

The best place to get it is Hkflix.

Here is a great resource when it comes to the Battle Royale dvds. Hope it helps.

That one pictured is the one I have. It may be a bootleg. But trust me. It is perfect. Vid quality it excellent. i think it was anamorphic and 1.85 OAR. Get the one pictured on Ebay for under 15 bucks! Well worth it for one great film.

SPOILER!!!!!!!!

Can someone tell me what he hell happned to that crazy chick and those 2 guys??? It looks like she raped them and disembowled them??? At least it looked like that when the camera pans out.

In the novel she pits them against each other until it was too late for them to realize she way playing them and then kills them both. I don't think it was filmed, though. It's worth reading the novel; it goes into all the students personalities more. If the novel isn't your thing (it is 700 pages long) read the comic book. It is even more explicit and just as good.

BTW, the Tartan 2-disc tin set is not a director's cut. It is a special edition cut: all the added scenes were filmed six months after the theatrical release. It would be only a director's cut if all the elements were filmed with the original production and were deleted for some reason i.e. running time, studio demands etc.

from DVDRewind...

OVERALL : Draw - This is a hard one:

Both the Korean release, and the new DTS Tartan 2-disc release feature a DTS track, the Director's cut and nice extras. Note however the extras for both the Korean release are identical and are both different to the UK extras. You can also check out the original 2-disc set from Tartan which does not include the DTS track but has a nice tin case and some collectible items such as cards, booklet etc.
The Japanese release Also includes a bevy of unique extras, however this version contains no English subtitles whatsoever.

From an English subtitles point of view the original Tartan release has dreadful burnt in, hard to read subtitles and the Universe subtitles although removable have grammatical and spelling errors throughout. However the UK Re-released NTSC 5.1 Version from Tartan and the two 2-disc verisons have removable clear, grammar and spelling error free subtitles. The Korean release also have good subtitles although the Starmax version due to the font used can be a little hard to read at times. The Cream Korean release has a better font, but overall the Tartan 2-disc subtitles seem to be the best and most accurate.

The choice is yours as to which verion to get, fans might consider both the Korean and Uk releases for the extras, whichever one you buy AVOID the original Theatrical Tartan UK Release.

I'd suggest getting the relatively cheap Universe R3 theatrical cut ($10 + shipping at HKFlix (US) or DDDhouse (HK) $4 + shipping ) AND if you can find them at a reasonable price, either the Starmax Korean (NTSC R0?) or Tartan (PAL R0) 2 disc special edition cuts depending on whether your machine does a good job of converting PAL or not. I have both of these SE sets, and the subs are better on the Tartan PAL. The second disc of bonus material is OK, but IIRC, the Starmax version has no English subs whereas the Tartan does. The problem is the Tartan SE has become very difficult to find for a decent price.

In some ways I like the original theatrical cut better than the special edition cut, but for some plot points, the special edition cut clears things up a bit. Hence, the reason for having both! But again, I wouldn't spend a fortune trying to get the Tartan 2 disc just for the special features. There is/was a single disc Tartan PAL SE cut out there that may be worth checking out also.

Bottom line IMHO: Universe R3 theatrical cut + one of the SE cuts (preferably the Tartan R0 PAL). It also looks like Tartan may be re-releasing the 2 disc SE cut at the end of Feb (see Tower UK site), hopefully to coincide with a UK release of BR2 Requiem!

Anyone know whether a Korean version of BR2 with Eng subs is forthcoming??

The subtitles on the director's cut are only bad during the extended scenes, and they are fine for the rest of the film - basically, if the subtiles have bad grammar, they are added scenes.

Looks like AznFilms.com here has all of the versions in stock - Tartan PAL SE 2 disc tin, Starmax NTSC 2 disc set, Universe theatrical cut, and the Tartan single disc SE. YMMV as I've never ordered from them . . .

Is the Starmax out of print? Dammit! I've been holding off on buying it and now I'll be kicking myself if it is.

If AznFilms.com does have it, anyone ever use them before? Are they safe?

For something like this you'd want good subs, and only one that has good subs AND is extended is the UK 2-disc in a tin can.
