FOTR: Bought the EE only.
TTT: Theatrical only.

[blasphemy_to_some] I'm not a huge fan of the LOTR series. I like 'em, and I'll probably watch it more than a couple times, but don't really care to have ALL the extras. [/blasphemy_to_some]

Bought both versions of the first 2 and will do the same with the last.

I tried starting the EE a bit ago but I know I can't stay up much longer. I'll start fresh in the morning.

Can anyone tell me if the Gollum book/DVD extra is worth the almost double price of the gift set. I bought the gift set for FOTR because of the National Geographic DVD and free pass to TTT, but I'm not sure this gift set is worth the extra price...anyone have a review of the Gollum DVD's content and running time?

I'm wondering the same thing, Spooky. I actually have the extra money to buy the gift set (unlike last time around) but I'm not sure the extra content is worth it. Hopefully someone will post some pics/impressions of the stuff that comes in the gift set.

Mine arrived yesterday and, I have to say that the extra Gollum stuff looks great. I haven't had a chance to watch the DVD yet, but there is a book included that has some absolutely beautiful concept sketchs, drawing, and pictures from the Gollum development (as well as some interviews, etc. with the people involved). The statue is good, but I think would have been more of a draw if it had been functional (like with the bookends in the last one). The disc and the booklet come in a kind of "book" that matches the look & feel of the "books" that the movie come in. If I get a chance to take some pictures and/or look at the disc, I'll let you know more.

Bottom line, though . . . I'm very happy that I got it . . .

namja: I think the EEs are worth it for the movies alone. The extras are just a fantastic bonus

Do the extra 45 minutes make that big a difference?

repost:

Pictures of my "Gollum/Smeagol"

A couple of thoughts:

-All Gollum's are NOT created equal. Looking over a few of them at BestBuy, it was quickly apparent that some looked nicer than others. Some looked dull/flat due to less of the 'highlight' skin color that brings out a lot of the textures in the sculpt. Others had a strange 'plastic' look to them. I spent about 5 minutes picking out the best looking one (they had tons). If yours is coming in via an online retailer then it's a crapshoot.

-The statue does in fact (in my eyes) look much better in person than those promo images of it. Those stills left the impression that it would be smooth and glossy like porcelin and it is not.

-I'm pleased with the statue, although it's not quite on par with the regular Sideshow line (see: Balrog). Still, I can not foresee forking out $80 for the companion angry Gollum statue when the DVD + statue only cost me $50.

I haven't popped in the Gollum DVD yet, so I can't speak on that. But my gut feeling is, if you don't particularly like/want the gollum statue, the gift set is probably not up your alley.

I originally posted (i think on the first page of this thread) that I was going to buy the Gift Set version, but after looking at it in Best Buy I decided against it and just got the EE version.

I think the sculpture is not done well, and it was not worth the extra $30 IMO. The coloring is way off from all the ones I have seen and the figure has this 'unfinished' look to it I thought. Maybe it is the material used to cast it, or the original sculpture, either way IMO not worth the cost.

Yeah, those statues looked kinda crummy this time.

I may go back and get the FOTR gift set though.
