How can anyone complain about this release. (Well, obviously some can) This is one of the most comprehensive sets in DVD history. Not to sound like a cheerleader for Fox, but they rarely disappoint in the dvd department. So what if the the Legacy doc is not included. The Alien disc alone has a 3 HOUR documentary on the film. (When the featurettes are "Play All") We even get a longer cut of Alien3. Even if Fincher didn't participate and it is seen as the weakest of the three, at least FOX put together a cut that might actually be better. And disc 9 houses everything on the LD releases for Alien and Aliens.

I guess some people wll only be happy until every piece of footage, promotional bullshit, everything is included. And with a sample of Alien blood attached to the package (a Best Buy exclusive of course)

For the Best Buy exclusive the box set is like the Evil Dead DVD case but when pressed spits globby liquid at you.

Uh...I actually enjoy Alien 3. It's most definitely not on par with the first 2, but it's nifty in it's own right. I cannot wait to see this.

I agree. The most interesting thing about this set to me is the expanded cut of 3.

So these will be released individually right? I've heard January 6th somewhere. . .is there any truth to this?

Ditto!
This is the main reason I'm picking the new set up.

Has anyone seen the box for the american set yet? not the images they are using now, the proper images of the box, showing the insides and all, as the R2 UK box lookes fine, then I saw the insides and its cheap and nasty looking and just looks crap, I need to see the nice American box, as the artwork is better than the UK box for starters, I hope they dont mess it up.

on "complaints"

first, I think that nobody can really comment on this box set until they get it.. The only review I have read is on thedigitalbits. And while I really really like their site, I doubt they can be really objective since they hyped it up so much in the book they just published.

Personally (and I know I am probably in the minority - usually am : ) ) I have been very disappointed in Fox 5 Star sets. The movie disc has been great (which is why I buy them) but I find the 2nd disc to be essentially a bunch of 5 to 20 minute fluffs, interviews, epk and trailers that - imho- didn't add much to the enjoyment of the film. I am concerned that this could happen in this box set as well.

while there is LOADS of "stuff" on the 2nd disc of each film, I remain cautiously optimistic on how insightful these will be. The 9th disc, in particular, seems like an hour or so of trailers and "production notes". I have nothing against trailers (i enjoy them) but a disc of trailers don't do it for me. Again, there is other "stuff" on the disc so it may be great.. but I will wait for more reviews.

my main comment is that - at least - the Alien Saga disc should have been included. While I haven't seen it, wouldn't it make sense that it has "unique documentary" material otherwise why is it being sold separately today? Perhaps it will be proven redundant by this box set.. but again, we have to wait and see..

I love these films...but at this point am holding off....

just my 2cents..

Of course, with the highly touted "45 hours of previously unseen material", if even as much as 80% of it is "5 to 20 minute fluffs, interviews, epk and trailers", your still looking at 9 hours of the good stuff.

Not bad . . . not bad at all . . .

That 45 hours includes the commentaries, which they use as the running time of the whole film to add to the totals.

Still this looks to be a nice set.

And if you're looking for a 5-Star disc with a good documentary I highly recommend "Cleopatra" which has an excellent feature-length doc on the making of the film.

BAD NEWS big time in my view. ALIENS uses the same print and same sound mix as the old disc. SHIT! I was looking forward so much to a cleaned up version, and especially a better sound experience. CRAP. I am pissed. I may pass on this entirely. And yes, I know it may "be cleaned up a bit" but this still upsets me..
From the Digital Bits:

In terms of image quality, the footage for both versions of the film are presented here in good looking anamorphic widescreen video. It's worth noting that this is the same film transfer that was seen on the previous DVD release (a new transfer wasn't done because Cameron was happy with the existing one). The difference here is that the film isn't competing with other extras for disc space, so the video bitrate is higher and compression is more efficient. I should also tell you that the video was put through additional digital clean-up passes, so you'll notice fewer print artifacts (dust and scratches) than you did on the previous DVD release. Contrast also seems slightly improved, with better overall clarity and shadow definition. You're still going to see moderate grain throughout the film, but that's a product of the original film stock used at the time. So if Aliens doesn't look as good as the first film on the Quadrilogy, it is at least better than the previous version. Again, the new footage blends perfectly with the original material in terms of quality, and the branching is virtually invisible.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix you get here is also the same one that was featured on the previous DVD.

The whole "Alien Saga" thing is strictly for the extra cash it generates. They did sort of the same thing with "Behind The Planet Of The Apes."

I'm being glass-is-half-full on this set. It sounds by the Digital Bits review that the documentaries are newly created, but incorporate older footge as well. Along with multi-angle stuff.

I wonder how the multi-angle features figure into the 45 hours? Do they count each angle?

Looking at the claim of 45 hours of extras, I would imagine that they not only count the multi-angle video each time, but also probably count the alternate cut of the entire film as a "special feature." With and without commentaries.

Whatever. The number of hours is just marketing hype anyway. It's the quality of the extras we care about.

Personally I like the first three films, and would love to see as much about them as possible. Aliens theatrical cut? Ooh, baby. As much as I like the extended cut I'd still like to have the original whenever possible. Seamless branching (which remains to be seen how seemless it is) looks like the way to go.

When more reviews come in we'll have to see. Either way, I'm about 90% certain I'll pick this up.

The existing print of Aliens is fine imo. All they did was clean it up a bit more. Sure a DTS track would have been nice but the fact that were getting a Cameron and cast commentary + new featurettes is worth the price of the box set for me.

Most people agree that the 3rd & 4th film were not as good so I seem them as a complementary bonus more than anything else..

PS. A lot of time and care was put into this set so I have no problem rewarding Fox with my $$$

Cheers!

So after weeks of checking ever day (sometimes multiple times per day ) DDD finally has the Quadrilogy listed on their site. It's under ALIEN QUADRILOGY BOX SET with a price of $73.19 and a release date of 12/03/2003 (but no other details yet). Yea!!! Decent price, too . . .

Not a BAD price, but I'm wondering what the B&M on this set is going to be. Around $70?

I'll just pick up ALIENS on January 26.

My favourite aspect of the film is James Horner's score, which was finally released complete on CD in 2001.

What would have made this new DVD perfect to me, is if they
re-edited the music into the film as it was written, as Cameron was so upset by the music he chopped up every piece and stuck it in the film almost randomly.

At least Horner talks about it in the "Final Countdown" post-production featurette.

Don't get me wrong, I love EVERY aspect of this film, but being a film music fan, I just gravitate toward it.

im glad that dts isn't included on 2 and 3. i wouldn't want bad video quality just to have the dts track. i'm also glad that as a newbie to the quadillogy, that there will be a subtitle noting what is a new scene to the flick. also like that 3 is gonna have a subtitle track to understand the stuff that should have been adr;ed.

Wow . . . I don't often get to post a e-tailer price better than that on DDD, but Amazon is showing $69.99 with free shipping, "releasing" on 12/02/2003.

I like this pricing trend . . . do I hear $59.99 . . . anyone?

there's over 4 and even 5 hours on 2 and 3 even with seamless branching so that would make the video not as good with dts.

I'm looking forward to seeing reviews from some site other than DigitalBits (whose reviews seem overly enthusiastic thus far for this set) to see what's what.

Will the reviews affect my buying this set at ALL? No way. It's mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
