You get a FULLSCREEN DVD as a gift. What would you do?

You could find a store with the Widescreen version for rent, rent it and swap your Fullscreen disc with the Widescreen version. Not that I condone that kinda thing, but I don't think the rental store would notice.

I'd just exchange it for the widescreen--plenty of stores don't mind as long as it's not opened.
Why keep it if it's not what I want, and it's not a big hassle to change it for what I do want?
Edit: Oops, just read that other post that it's a previewed. Who gives someone a used gift, unless it's an antique or rare??? Anyway, I guess it's yours...especially since I think Blockbuster only carried the Fullscreen of that particular movie (even though my Blockbuster almost always only carries widescreen, that movies the exception).

HEre's what I would do:
I would draw and quarter the person while sticking bamboo shoots under their fingernails and make them watch reruns of Felicity.
OR, I would accept the gift gladly and be thankful for the gesture.

I'd get rid of it for two reasons:
1. The movie sucks (my opinion, of course).
2. You're not going to get anywhere with her. If she's buying you previously viewed DVDs from BLOCKBUSTER of all places, do you really think she's going to give up the punani?
If she liked you, she would have at least bought you a brand new version.
If for some reason, she ever goes to your house and sees that you no longer have the DVD, tell her the dog ate it.
I can't wait until we get a Best Buy or something here. There aren't any good places to go to buy DVDs. It's a shame. Circuit City is sort of okay, but I've never bought a DVD from there. Wal-Mart sucks. K-Mart sucks. I can't even imagine where people who live out in Kahala and Hawaii Kai go to get their DVDs. If they're smart, they probably buy them all online. I can't believe they're building a Wal-Mart next to Ala Moana....as if traffic isn't bad enough in that area already. It would've been sweet if a Best Buy opened up there instead. Damn, I miss Fry's.

Don't open it. Get over to a store and exchange it for the WS. If they give you any s//t about no slip. Do 1 of 2 things... Get the slip from the girl (she should understand) or find a understanding manager and pleed your case. I've never had a problem and it has happened a few times.

Too tell you the truth, I don't think she even knew that she bought me the widescreen version. Since she also bought it pre-viewed at Blockbuster, she wouldn't even have that choice.

Sell it and get the widescreen. If she had gotten you a shirt that was to small, would she mind if you exchanged it for one that was the right size? No. It's the same situation here, only she got you a movie that was too small.

I was going to post something like this but didn't want to hurt the poor guy's feelings! Harsh, IZ. Harsh.FYI, the new release prices at our local CC are the same as on the mainland, so they match up quite favorably with Best Buy, and sometimes beat them. Costco also often has good prices.
I think the Best Buy is supposed to be built near Pearl Ridge, but I haven't heard anything in a long time, so not sure what the status of that is.
And the local WalMarts often match or beat the local competition on new releases as well.
Of course, if you do Columbia House, the above is all pretty much a moot point.

jarofclay,
I'd go check around some of the local BBs. They may have widescreen copies of Insomnia that are previously viewed, so you still might be able to exchange it. Or you could ask if you could exchange it for a different previously viewed title.
As for the girl, unless you are both pretty young (meaning money might be tight) then this sounds like a token gift, so I don't think she thought of it enough to be upset if you exchange it for something.
But if you like her, you should just ask her out already, and stop worrying about the DVD!

Remember when we rarely had to worry about P&S dvds?
When we got our dvd player for Christmas 1999,I asked my Dad to pick me up The Road Warrior & Fistful of Dollers trilogy. I did not even think of "Oh,make sure it is the widescreen version!" since I took it for granted, that they were in O.A.R.
Also most dvds then. Included both versions on the same disc. Something pathetic moron studio execs should attempt today to avoid confusion!
Yet since that great Christmas. I have been very careful about asking for dvds for my brither or Christmas which are one week apart from each other. Since my parents don't want to go all out spending on us,they pretty much force me to choose a dvd or two I want(sadly can never ask for the expensive box sets i'd love to own!). So I make sure to choose dvds that I know include O.A.R. only or both versions. If released individually & it's a 'big' title I know they will buy anyway. I make sure to go with them to pick it out
Had to do that last Christmas with Back To The Future. My mom was complaining about how much she was spending(despite not having to!)...& then asked me if I wanted BTF? She planned to get it as a gift for all of us. At first I told her,yse we'd want the set,but can always get it another time just to be nice & not greedy/pushy. Yet she became pushy started yelling "Get the damn thing, you really don't appreciate how much I do for all of you do you" & she basically forced me to go pick the dvd up,despite not being enthused. I made sure to pick out the widescreen version of course
Oh yeah,we were trapped at the dreadful Wal-Mart. The store we were at,was far dirtier than another WM in the city. It was also insanely packed,a complete zoo. Another reason for not being enthused to be their. My mom got pissed at my brother & I for criticizing WM,lol.
Yet every Christmas. We get less & less dvds if that tells you anything. In fact, the BTF set was all we got last year dvdwise!
Yet asking for high priced sets like Queer As Folk Season 1 or 2,any of the Twilight Zone sets or the Dirty Harry collection are off limits because of the over $50 price tag. So I am still stuck without them, but dieing to get them when I can afford to.
Anyway I find going into a store to exchange for a proper aspect ratio dvd weird. Mainly since the clerks around here are so clueless & unhelpful.
So I don't know what I would do in such a situation. Probably just sell it & buy the correct version if I like the film that is....then again,it's 'nice' to hold onto something someone gives you. So I guess getting the correct version would be the best thing to do. Can always sell it off after a year, when it's not a 'present gift' anymore
Oh I have had this happen with VHS though years ago. Someone picked up a cheap $4 copy of Die Hard 2 at WalGreens. I already owned the WS vhs of Die Hard 1 & 2. So I told them I already had the film & they took it back. I may have been an 'insenstive' kid back then since I was So honest, lol. Once my aunt bought me a film I had never heard of before(also found in a cheap bin at WG). I think James Spader was in it. Some 80's crime thriller that looked direct to video. I looked at it stumped with a "What the hell is this?" look on my face. Aunt then got upset, took it away from me & returned it. Granted I was only 13 at the time.
Also I have the WS vhs of Apollo 13,but one of our relatives bought the P&S vhs(another cheap bin buy at WG or something) for my little brother. He kept the tape for awhile without opening it. Then sold it for the same price at a garage sale. I don't think anyone bought it yet though, lol.
Yet so far, with dvd, have not had the P&S problem for the time being.

I'm just glad she gave me a gift at all. And I'm working on it. We haven't been friends that long yet, so I don't want to rush things.

As for the initial poster, I doubt Blockbuster will let you exchange it. I suggest you thank her for the gift, watch it with her, then watch a Widescreen DVD (her choice) then make her breakfast in the morning.

I'll keep that info in mind, though, in case I have a temporary lapse of sanity and decide to buy a DVD from a local store here.

Unlike so many other posters, I say her buying a PVD instead of a new one is a GOOD sign. Without context, it doesn't say either way if she wants to have your babies. But, if a long-term hookup is in your future, then the one thing better than a hot chick is a frugal hot chick -- easy on the eyes and easy on the wallet.

But, if she gets upgraded to girlfriend status, then that could all change. And, I know some others may not find her as hot as I do, but my feelings are all that matters right?
I think she's the cutest thing. And, yes, I'm 30. But that doesn't mean I have to get desperate. The one thing I learned from "Some Kind Of Wonderful" is that I'd rather be alone for the right reasons than with someone for the wrong reasons.
Back to topic: I'm deciding that I will keep the DVD for now. I have already watched the movie once and hope to get through the commentary as well. And, like someone else said, I'm glad she's a frugal woman.

You should've, in a snooty voice said, "Hello? The remake with Mork and the guy from Scent in a Woman? In fullscreen? Skjoldbjærg creates a new benchmark for post-Bergman Scandinavian cinema and you get me this??"
Or, accept it.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
By reading these responses I suppose it makes sense now how so many have substituted a DVD collection instead of having a girlfriend in their lives.
It's a gift. It's a symbol. If a pretty girl gives you a gift and you like her you should keep it. Of COURSE you should keep it. If you really like the film you can always pick up a WS copy on the sly later, just like you would if you were buying it for yourself.
You also need to invite her over to watch it ASAP, if you haven't already. Why would she give you a movie? She's saying that she wants you to ask her to watch it with you.
If you like this girl, don't risk hurting her feelings and damaging your relationship with her (even if only in a minor way) over a $14.99 DVD.
Let us know what you decide, and how it turns out.
All the best. Courage, friend.
