In the actual movie, Simba sounds like a young boy, when he sings he sounds like Michael Jackson, a few octives higher or something.

And for the new song its like they said "ah screw, lets just have Shania Twain" sing it
If I remember correctly (and I am too lazy to check), the speaking voice was the 2nd oldest kid from Home Improvement and the singing voice was the kid that played MJ in the Jackson 5 TV movie. :-)

Just some useless info for ya. :-)

I think that the singing voice of Simba was female (I personally can't imagine Johnathan Taylor Thomas singing)

Eww. Those new crocs (and the birds coming out of their mouths) look terrible. Too bad since I always liked the croc bit.

I still haven't picked this disc up (didn't have time yesterday) and was going to force myself into giving the new song a shot (I thought the song added to Beauty and the Beast was terrible) but, after all the bad comments here, I don't think I'll even bother.
Okay . . . I am trying very hard to hold back a possibly undeserving rant . . . deep breaths . . . whewwwwww . . .

Okay . . . better . . . three questions:

1) Do you own another version of the movie? VHS? LD? Other?

2) Are you saying that you are not planning on buying it at all based on the reviews or just not rushing out to get it?

3 Do you like the movie?

Well, I would have to say that I usually am not a big opponent of "revisionist filmmaking" (even Star Wars). However, I didn't care AT ALL for the Morning Report song. It seemed that it messed up pacing and seemed horribly out of place. However, as for the animation changes, I wouldn't have noticed if no one told me.

talemyn,

Thanks for the pix. The new eyes look better, but I wouldn't have cared if they had left the original eyes in there.

As for the changes, people are entitled to their opinions, but I'm shocked that some would actually not buy one of their favorite movies just because of a minor change like croc eyes. I don't think the addition of a new song is even a good enough reason to skip buying a favorite movie. After all, you can choose not to listen to it. The alternative is to continue watching the movie on an inferior format like laserdisc or VHS. I for one am tired of that.

I guess I might as well chime in with my disappointment with the Morning Report song. I agree with everyone else who said it seemed out of place, and was ultimately pointless. The original scene played so much better.

As far as the crocodiles and birds and such, I wasn't bothered at all by the changes. I probably wouldn't have even noticed if people weren't making such a fuss over it.

Overall, I'm very happy with this DVD release. I will, however, only watch the theatrical version from now on. I really didn't like that song.

You read my mind on this one (but I didn't want to go off RocShemp until I made sure that I had understood what he was saying correctly). This is the at least the second of the MANY Lion King threads in which I have seen people imply that they were not going to upgrade to the DVD because of two minor animation changes (the other one being the removal of the letters "S E X" or "S F X" from the cloud of dust). I just don't see how those two tiny details outweigh the improvements in the quality of the presentation.

Bitching and moaning about trivialities is the bread and butter of Internet message boards/forums... especially for hardcore DVD Geeks.

Removal of letters? What are you talking about? Didn't you guys see this? :

I hardly think that's a tiny detail...

Obviously the actor who did Simba's singing voice (Jason Weaver) has grown past the cub stage and had to be replaced for the new song.

Why spend money on something so minor as the crocs? Does any one have insight on this? Or was it the bleeding hearts of soccor mom's saying the croc had too many scary teeth?

I don't know about that. He did play The Phantom on Broadway.

1. I own the VHS and have the DVD preordered but haven't had the time to go pick it up. (My classes have eaten up my free time.)

2. I'm getting it. I just think I wont watch the version with the new song since everyone says it sucks. (I hate the song added to Beauty and the Beast so I simply select "theatrical version" everytime I watch the DVD.) I was planning to give the new song a shot but I think I may just ignore it altogether.

3. It's one of my favourite Disney movies (though Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast share the crown as my all time Disney faves.)

how very true, just watched the first ten minutes of the movie last night and from the very beginning the sound is dramatically enhanced. The surrounds are more prominent and the introduction scene with Mufasa, Simba and Scar add a slight echo sound to the voices in the cave - very effective. I do miss my subwoofer though, my current soundsystem and room configurement can't accomodate a large subwoofer

Just get the laserdisc CAV box set version of film, and you can get an unmolested version of THE LION KING, with far superior bonus features.
the amount of prelimanary sketches and artwork is stunning and sorely lacking on the DVD.

The DVD is awesome, but I only have two small complaints:

1. The Disney Enchanced Sound should have been the Default Audio
2. The morning added nothing to the movie and could have been left out

Phew . . . . . . I'm glad I asked first . . . I almost uneedingly jumped on a soap box.

I've seen a lot of people indicating that they were not going to upgrade from their VHS copy because of the minor changes in animation (crocs and SEX/SFX dust). Glad to see that you have more sense than that.

how do you get rid of that damn song? I went to the enhanced theater mix on the menu, and then it went to the special edition version.
this song is that bad, it really REALLY feels out of place and doesn't really belong. i like how the theater version works since its that scene just no singing.
also anyone notice a little bit of video noise/jaggies in chapter 7. Its mainly in the background in the dark sky. Everything else is fine. why did they leave in a wierd stiff animal early on in the song (its right before we see simba with the leaves around him, )but change the crocs

Some more useless info.

In the Disney Channel music video feature on disc one, one of the "stars," Taj Mowry(sp?) was on the WB sitcom "Smart Guy," where his brother was played by Jason Weaver, the original singing voice of Simba!

I also agree the new song is unnecassary and the kid they got for Simba's singing voice sounds way too girly.

I don't really care for the crocs. Hell, I probably never would've noticed.

I was expecting the SFX/SEX thing gone.
