2 Godzilla dvds to be released in US!

Looks like they're going to do it right this time too.

Godzilla vs. Megaguiras &
Godzilla Mothra King Ghidora (GMK)

Tentatively scheduled for 2/04, but it could be delayed if GMK gets a theatrical release. Both movies would be on separate discs (none of this double feature crap), widescreen with both the Japanese and English dubbed versions. Hallelujah!

Go to Henshin online for the skinny.

I've got the HK R3 versions of the Godzilla flicks, since it didnt look like Toho was ever going to budge on the "No R1 release" policy. Looks like I was wrong.

I'll probably go for the double dip, if they're anamorphic (the R3 discs are not) and they have some kind of extras on 'em (the R3 are pretty bare bones).

Ditto, what El-Kabong said.

But I've been hearing about a possible GMK theatrical release since for summer 2002, so I'm still sceptical. Still, I saw the film theatrically in Japan in Dec 2001 and own the HK DVD, so: if Toho wants to finally treat stateside fans right with a proper R1 release, I'll give them my money, but if they continue to screw western Goji fans around like they always have in the past, well, I'll always find a way around that.

EDIT: Fixed dates, because when I orginally typed this, I was living 10 years in the past.

Personally I'll believeit when I see it. I remember how they backed out of including the Japanese track at the last minute with G2000.

Still, I'm hopeful.

Nice, Toho is only hurting themselves by withholding these from R1

Sure will... but what's wrong with the "double feature crap"? I have G vs SpaceGodzilla / G vs Destroyah and it's pretty damn good. (Bare-bones, but I'll take all the Godzilla I can get.)

I'd be surprised if we saw GMK or GXM in the theaters here. G2K just about crashed and burned at the box office as hard as they come. I guess in the modern age of loud, mindless effects laden action films, a mindless action film about a man in a rubber monster suit just wont fly with american audiances.

I'd buy them if I didn't already have the Hong Kong discs.

You said it when you said, "I'll take what I can get." This is filmdom's longest running franchise, it (and its fans) deserves better.

What I would want to see is each movie in its true aspect ratio, with both Japanese and English dubbed tracks (5.1 of course) and supplemental materials like a captioned commentary track, trailers, behind the scenes, etc.

Can you imagine how slick a box set with Godzilla 1985 to Godzilla vs. Destroyah with maybe an additional disc packed with supplements would be?

Since I'm ranting now, wouldn't it be cool if Criterion got the rights to Gojira and released it (both Gojira and GKOTM) to commemorate his 50th b-day?

Oh, you make me long for the last days of Laserdisc. Criterion indeed was planning on a special edition of the Godzilla movies on LD. They'd even managed to work out some kind of deal with Toho somehow - unedited, undubbed, the whole nine yards!

And then the LD market imploded, taking with it the dreams of the Super Duper Godzilla set and leaving us with the el-crappo sony discs. Alas, I weep for what could have been. . . .

already got the Hong Kong disks. Oh well...

I'd get them if they WERE the "double feature crap". What's wrong with getting two movies for the price of one?

I too remember the original language track that was supposed to be on G2K. I pre-ordered it, and was disappointed when it was pulled. I'd buy this in a minute!

This is good news! I sprang for all of the Heisei godzilla films in R2 @ $60+ each. They are all anamorphic but without English subs. I'm definately buying these once and IF they materialize. Like the rest of the posters, I'll beleive it when I see it.

Sorry about that, I meant 2001 and 2002, of course. I was sleepy when I typed that and somehow my brain found itself 10 years in the past. I've fixed my post.

I already have the HK discs too. no reason to double dip. What i would really like is for someone to release the rest of the older Godzilla films as well as "Mothra" "War of the Gargantua" ect ect

This past August I saw both GMK and GXM at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. It was nice seeing Godzilla up on the big screen again. I hope GMK can get a limited run.

Its a sad day indeed.

If this DVD release is true then i will be happy beyond belief.

I will say one thing about the Godzilla 2000 DVD, i loved the commentary track on it.

Absolutely. Michael Schlesinger seems to be a real fan of these films and I found his insider view of the editing and release of this film in the US fascinating.

At first I was interested in getting the HK discs, but I decided against it. Japanese DVDs would be great, if only they were more readily available. I see them on eBay sometimes but the price is ridiculous. Also, some of the Japanese discs have no English subtitles?

As for getting Mothra '61 or War of the Gargantuas, I see those on eBay, most likely someone's home made creations, but they're out there.

I would definitely pick up a box set if it were available. I already have a majority of the Godzilla films, but some are on VHS (gasp!, and some were actually taped off TV). If a comprehensive set were done right I believe there would be plenty of takers.

As for a possible release of GMK in theaters, I would highly doubt it. Sci-Fi Channel ran both Megaguirus and GMK less than a month ago during a Godzilla/Mothra marathon. Wouldn't make sense to do a theatrical release after a television debut.
