OK, so who's picked these up and what are your opinions?

I picked up GMK, and although I haven't watched it yet, I flipped through it quick and it looks great! Probably the best picture quality yet for a kaiju movie with original language.

Ford Prefect put up in-depth reviews for both in the "review" section of the forum.

Yeah I've read the reviews for both of these. Sadly (but to DVDTalk's credit), I've only seen one other review of one of these (GMK).

Yes, the discs look really good. The audio is very impressive. I noticed the subtitles are a little different than what I remembered when I had seen GMK in a theater. The commander of the military effort had some funny lines so it was easy to remember them. His reaction to the continuous appearance of new monsters:
Theater: "What is this, monsters on parade?!?"
disc: "What is this, a monster convention?!?"
I remember his advice to the jet fighters also being a little different, and the diss of GINO at the military briefing in the beginning was also a little different. I'm sure there must be other instances.

I'm not complaining, mind you. I love that these DVDs are out and with the level of quality they were given.

I picked both up and I have to say I didn't really like G v Megaguirus. It was ok but more of the same with nothing interesting in the mix. I still like that Godzilla suit(G 2000) the best.

However, Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidrah totally rocked. I mean it was back to the days when TOHO cared about making good G movies. It's Ironic that the guy who made the 3 Gamera movies did this one because I've long said that those three were better than the G movies of the 90's.

Godzilla was M-Effer in this flick! I mean his devastation was real and personal. I think for a long time they didn't really show the aftermath and deaths that occurred from his appearance on the mainland. The girl in the hospital scene was just shocking and brutal. I saw a comment over at amazon where the person said it was "mean spirited". Bullshit. That's exactly the kinda stuff you expect to see when giant monsters rolls through town.

GMKG was also the most emotional G film I’ve seen in years. I really cared for Yuri and her Father. I must admit I teared up at the end. I know people hate that G has become evil and Ghidrah good but when you think about it, it makes sense. G has been remade so often why not remake King Ghidrah. BTW, Ghidrah has long been one of my favorite Kaiju.

Now that I think about it this Godzilla suit is fast becoming one of my favorites. He looks menacing and truly scary. The eyes are incredible.

Bottom line GMkG rocked and I hope the next G films have as much heart and guts.

The picture was good but the sound was fantastic! I mean come on, Godzilla giving the subwoofer a workout is too cool

This one reminded me of a Heisei series movie. It's my least favorite of the "millennium" era. As for the suit, I've grown used to it. To me, it looks the most like a creature that could actually exist.

No argument there. I absolutely love this movie. This is the one I’ll show non-G fans to showcase the genre.

Not sure how that’s ironic, to me it’s expected. Shusuke Kaneko can be thanked for keeping the Godzilla franchise going. Godzilla Millennium (2000) and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus did not do well in Japan so Toho really needed a good showing from GMK. From what I understand it’s the highest grossing Japanese film in Japanese box office history. BTW, Kaneko’s Pyrokinesis (aka Cross Fire) is available from Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock. It’s admittedly influenced from Stephen King’s Fire Starter and is a fun movie if you’re looking for more stuff from this director.

One of the first questions I have to answer when talking about or showing a Godzilla movie to someone is “Is Godzilla good or bad in this movie”. Even when he’s “bad”, he is something that mankind has brought upon itself. I like the “nature’s avenger” analogy that has been used to explain him, though that really isn’t appropriate in the context of GMK.

As for King Ghidorah being a “good guy”, we kind of had a glimpse of that with “Mecha King Ghidorah” in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. If Mechagodzilla (IMO Godzilla’s most formidable foe) can be a good guy, there’s no reason KG can’t. Of course this would have never been an issue if Kaneko had been able to do what he wanted. The three “Guardian Monsters” he wanted to use were Baragon, Angilas and Varan.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla was directed by Masaaki Tezuka, who also directed Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. While it is no GMK, it is a very fun movie and a great improvement over his first G movie. 2003’s Godzilla Mothra Mechagodzilla: Tokyo SOS was also directed by Tezuka and is the only “Millennium Era” G movie (so far) that is a sequel. 2004 is of course Godzilla’s 50th birthday and from what I’ve read they’re looking to get some new blood to direct it. The movie (right now referred to as “The Godzilla”) will apparently feature 10 kaiju!

The picture is almost too good. The high quality transfer kind of exposes the budget limitations Toho works with. And yes, I love the sound! I just wish they’d let Godzilla’s roar be a bit loader in the sound mix.

Looks like Ryuhei Kitamura, of Versus fame, is the heavy favorite to healm G's 50th.
