Hmmm...that brings up another topic. I'm surprised no one's bitching about the 5.1 remix being done for these. The originals weren't, were they? What were the original audio tracks for the films?

Why would anyone want Indiana Jones, an action movie, in anything less than DD 5.1?

Since Spielberg and Lucas have cloute, I think we can assume that a 5.1 is something they'd like. Still, there is enough room for the original track, so it's a shame it's missing.

Because it wasn't originally presented in 5.1.

According to IMDB "Raiders" originally had a six-channel soundtrack as part of its 70 mm release.

I'm a little disappointed that more extras aren't included (especially after reading that list of what's available!). Still, there's no doubt that I will be picking this set up immediately upon release.

So you would rather have John Williams' classic score emanating from a single speaker instead of five speakers?

Huh?

It wasn't originally in mono either. What the hell are you talking about?

Clarification requested: Is the Trilogy coming on October 21 or November 4?

And .... Wasn't Jurassic Park 1 (1993) the very first film shown in Dolby Digital in theaters? (Was it in full 5.1 btw?)

Much obliged for relevant data.

Batman Returns was the first Dolby Digital film.

Jurassic Park was first to use DTS

It was originally scheduled for 11/4 but Nemo scared them all the way back to 10/21.

Thanks, Ohhhhhhhhh........

Ahh, yes, it was DTS for JP1. That's right.
Did this really "blow everyone away" at that time in '93?

Thanks Lisa.

Ah, well, that's different. I wasn't aware of all that. I only skimmed through previous Indiana Jones threads. Yeah, it does suck that all this stuff isn't included. Perhaps there's a reason, perhaps not. But I still think the set isn't so bad.

Well, like I said, I didn't get a chance to watch all three. I remember liking what I saw from when I was a child, but I never got around to watching them when I, er, matured. First, cuz they weren't available in widescreen, and next, cuz I refused to go back to VHS.

I think one of the reasons why they aren't being included them is because studios or producers feel it's special to produce all new documentaries instead of including older ones. Maybe just so they could print "All new feature-length documentary with....." on the back of the set.
I bet you are right, the new docs have footage from the Making Ofs. If I was in charge, the old documentaries would be on and if there was enough material that didn't overlap info new docs or featurettes would be made. If there was not enough new material, I would have new interviews with Spielberg and cast discussing their feelings on the film and any amusing stories they would like to share.

The old documentaries put you as close to being on the set as possible and I still think it is a shame they are not included.

I have no idea what the original sound tracks are for Raiders.

You say this like it's an option for everyone. I was still a teenager when LDs were around. I could barely afford guitar strings, how would I possibly be able to buy a LD player as well as the discs? Heck, it took much begging just to get a Sega Genesis out of my folks back when that came out. Imagine trying to get them to shell out for a LD player. I remember seeing LDs at Suncoast and they looked pretty sweet, but, like I said, the whole thing was out of my price range (namely an allowance). By the time I became a widescreen advocate, LDs were on their way out and OAR was one of the major selling points of DVD. Took a couple years before I got my DVD player, but that's where I am now. Don't forget, some of us are young 'uns. I'm pretty old at a ripe 23.

Also, you look a lot like me. I think people always get us confused.

Cornelius...

Christmas 1992. I got 6 laserdiscs. 3 of which were the Indy trilogy.

I am only 2 years older than you.

You're NOT too young to have had one.

yeah, i can see not being able to get indy LDs when you were younger and they first came out, who did have $ back in them days? But what about a year or two ago? LD players can be had dirt cheap on ebay etc. Im 28 now, and I was in the Marines after high school so I could afford that kinda thing. At any rate, the LDs of indy are definitely the best way to watch them and will be until the dvd set is actually released.

I don't have an LD player because I don't want to buy things that will clutter my house. If there were tons of movies I wanted only on LD, it would be a different story, or if I had a bigger house :P

Age wasn't the issue so much as money. I got my DVD player a couple years ago. When I was 12 (in 1992) or even 14 (in 94), the last thing I would've even considered asking for as a Christmas gift would be a laserdisc player and some laserdiscs to go with it. Hell, I probably didn't even get any Christmas gifts in 1994. Even if laserdisc players were dirt cheap a couple years ago, my budget still couldn't justify spending any amount on a player and the proper software. I collected VHS for awhile, as much in widescreen as possible. Once I made the shift to DVD (ironically, via a Christmas gift), I never went back to "compromising". Yeah, so anyway, money was the issue mostly. But in 1992, like I said, I was 12, so why would I be collecting laserdiscs? I probably wasn't even sure what they were. It was a hassle just to get my parents to buy me VHS tapes. They would've preferred I just tape it off the TV, which we did also.

And to jekbrown, like I said, I made the jump to DVD a couple years ago, so I never saw a reason to pick up a LD player in addition to the DVD player. Sure, there are movies on LD that aren't on DVD, but most of them will make their way to DVD eventually, even if they don't include all the fabulous extras. I can live without that, personally. I also haven't been buying online that much either. I didn't get my first credit card till the end of 2001, I think. And my first checking account till last year. So if it wasn't something I could readily buy in a store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.), chances are, I wouldn't be buying it. Obviously, my options are different now, but money is probably even tighter than it was then. I can afford to buy a couple DVDs a month and maybe a box set or two. But factoring in a LD player and the software, it's not really justified. Especially since I have other stuff outside the world of media/entertainment that needs buying.

Yep...check out those back covers. It's Indy so it's amazing to look at.

Word to the wise: Don't look at that little box in the upper left hand corner. It hurts it's so disappointing.

I hardly ever look at the extras on my DVDs, so the lack of supplements on this set doesn't bother me in the least. I've never seen Raiders or Temple of Doom, so it'll just be nice to watch them for the first time.
