Just a quick question to the board, as I've been out of circulation for a while and need some advice about this dvd.

I have a chance right now to buy this dvd for $150. I know for a fact it is authentic. It does NOT have the "white ring" though, and was wondering if this is still a good deal for this dvd. It's in excellent condition except for a tiny abrasion on the disc itself, which does not affect the play.

Just want to know if I should jump on this deal? It sounds good to me, but just wanted some back up advice. Thank you.

$150 is too much for any DVD..

If it means alot to you to own that disc, then, yes, I would say $150 is a good deal. Here's why -- at the prodding of my wife to start purging some dvds that I never watch, I started following Ebay on this disc. I tracked several auctions last week and they all ended at around $230. So, I decided to put mine up for auction since I never get the urge to watch that one and with 4 days left on the auction, it is already up to $190.

I guess that kind of gives you a reasonable "going-rate" of approx. $220. This is just from what I have seen in the past week. Hope that helps.

Pass on that deal. Use your $150 and go buy 10 - 15 dvds that you will enjoy watching.

Ok, people are bringing me to my senses here. You're right, $150 is a little ridiculous for a movie I may watch once or twice. I suppose I could always sell it off after awhile, but by then someone else may have the rights to it and distribute it, and say goodbye to getting my money back on that deal. I think I will pass. The Killer is widely avaiable in other version, Region 1 and Region 0.

The Killer from HKL is supposed to be one of the best versions out.

Fox Lorber also has has a region 1 (although its OOP now) that I find perfectly fine (although I haven't seen the HKL or the CC version).

It depends on the seller. If a retailer/second hand seller, I wouldn't accept a "tiny abrasion". It hurts your eventual resale value(since the logic for buying in this thread is your buying price($150) vs the current market value($220 or so). The single most important component has a defect, even cosmetically, then you know why the price is so low if it's infact a retailer selling it. If they are willing to sell for 150, they'll probably sell for 100. As great a film as it is, I can't imagine the demand is THAT HIGH so that if you don't jump on it it will go. The retailer probably paid 75 bucks at most for it(unless it's been in stock since it's release), so 100 bucks is still a reasonable price for a "defective" product.

If it's a friend/acquaintence, and you really just must have the film, borrow the movie and burn it on DVD(take or pay to have this done if you don't have the gear). Even if you gotta cough up 20 bucks for this, you're still making out better if you are interested in the art and not the investment.

Get the Fox Lorber version, in my opinion no movie is worth that much, especially when it's avaialble on DVD through some other companies.

Good choice. For $150 you could buy a region-free player, get the Hong Kong Legends disc and still have money left over.

I remember I traded a copy of spinal tap criterion I bought for 30 bucks for this disc, got the re-release of spinal tap later on. didn't like a double sided criterion anyways. Best trade I ever did. I love this disc/movie. And the menu is too cool.

I have the Universe R0 version that cost me like $5 and it is good enough for the time being.

Ok people. I'm going to take the majority's advice and search for another distributor for this movie. Afterall, i really just want it for the movie itself, not to re-sell it. If I did get the Criterion though, which was off of a second-hand seller, I probably would only watch it a couple of times anyway, and then probably try to sell it just because i know it's worth a few bucks, and some people are willing to pay for it. $150 doesn't come easy to me, and I think I would have regretted it in the long run anyway?

I have a multi-region player that can convert pal to ntsc, so I'm sure I'll find something out there, no matter what format it's in, that's ten times cheaper than the Criterion oe? I collect Criterion's, but I'm not a completist or anything of them. I have a few oop's, but I think this one, as well as Salo, I could do without paying the big bucks. I think Salo is another that's available in a Region 2 Pal format, if memory serves me? That's one movie I've heard so much about, that I'd love to get. I'm also a big fan and collector of Euro-Cult movies, so I don't think there would be anything in it that would shock me that much? But I heard it is a shocking film? But that's another topic.

I was thinking the same thing.

If you have a multi-region player that can do PAL, problem solved. Just get the HKL R2 Killer and BFI R2 Salo. And you will still have a bunch of money left over.

CRITERION DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN IT IS THE BEST.

My Armageddon, The Killer, and The Long Good Friday are all region two anamorphic.

Nothing against Criterion - they do the best possible job (for when they're doing it) 99% of the time. For the three I mentioned there has to be fifty Criterions that outmatch foreign counterparts.

I will definetly try to seek those R2 Pal dvd's out of The Killer & Salo this weekend. Thanks for the advice people> :-)
