When a movie is re-issued, do you keep previous one or not?

I've only gotten one DVD movie in two different editions: Princess Bride and Special Edition. Because the SE is in every sense superior to the original release, I just gave the original one away. If the original edition offer something not in the latest edition, then I probably would've kept both versions.

I'll only get rid of the original version if everything from it is ported over to the new version. For example, I kept the original Charlie's Angles DVD when I got the Superbit since the SB didn't have the commentary track, but did have all the other extras.

I'll usually give away or sell the previous disc.   The only time I've broken this rule is with the Universal version of Army of Darkness.   For some strange reason I like it better than the Director's Cut, which is the other version of AOD that I own.

So I decided to try to return it. I've owned it for over a year (probably bought it when it came out) and it played fine before. I take excellent care of my DVDs, so I didn't damage it. My logic is that the studio reimburses the stores for defective merchandise. Maybe I'm wrong?
Anyway, I went to Media Play to exchange it and discovered that there's the new edition and they wouldn't take my old one. So now I'm screwed. So do I have to simply chalk it up as a loss and buy the new one or is there some other recourse?

Depends.
1. If it has extras that don't cross over, I'll keep both. Like the MGM/Criterion "This is Spinal Tap." Both are well worth owning.
2. Different cuts. Generally, I want to keep both cuts of a movie. Like LOTR:FOTR. I feel that both cuts are worth owning. However, I'll do this on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes, I might just want to own the Director's cut or unrated cut for something like "American Pie."
3. Cover art. If I like the old cover art better, I'll keep both. Like "Evil Dead 2." The original release had the skull with eyeballs on the cover -- the original theatrical poster. I like that, so I still have it even though I've bought the Evil Dead SE. If I ever upgrade to the "Swingers" SE, I'll probably keep the old one because I like its cover better.
DVDs I've ditched when I upgraded: True Romance, Interview with the Vampire. Discs I will ditch once I upgrade: Seven, Boogie Nights, Starship Troopers.

Rarely... I kept the CC of Sid & Nancy (duh) for the extras (a rare exception to my extras schmextras rule) but usually watch the MGM version for the anamorphic transfer. Kept the 25th of The Exorcist when TVYNS came out, since it was different cut of the film minus the terrific documentary. Other than that, nothing comes to mind at the moment... Silence of the Lambs, Re-Animator, Unforgiven, Pulp Fiction, FOTR, Das Boot, etc all went to eBay, like most tend to do when a better version is offered.
edit - To address your post, if I liked T2, I would keep the UE for the DTS track.

I've upgraded a lot of DVDs I own...Black Hawk Down, LOTR, T2 (twice), Pulp Fiction, The Rock, and many others. With the first week deals on new releases and the ability to sell these DVDs online, it's not costly at all to upgrade.
The only one I somewhat regret is upgrading to the T2:EE. Can't even view the hi-def version on our brand new, loaded computer...ridiculous. Probably will eBay it and just hold on to the UE.

I keep all my old editions. I think the only movies that I've double dipped in have been Terminator 2 and LOTR, even though with both of those, the sets were completely different.

I haven't upgraded many - just Rushmore and Pulp Fiction - and I gave them both away, as the new version completely replaced the old versions.
If I ever upgrade my Boogie Nights or finally get the Criterion Traffic, I suppose I'd get rid of the old versions by giving them to friends.
I have both versions of LOTR and Apocalypse Now, but they're such different releases that I'd want to have both versions. I prefer the origina AN, but of course the Redux version has the extra footage, so for historical sake I'll hang onto it. Now I hear there's a 3-disc version in the works that has both of the film versions and a disc of extras. If that ever comes out, then I'll give the other two away too.

I'm actually thinking of doing another giveaway. Last couple of times I stuck to the Kevin SMith and Brian Lynch boards, but I might do it here.

I give mine to my brother-in-law. All of you should also. He is a nice guy.
The only title I have both copies of is Silence of the Lambs due to supplementary material on the Criterion not on the MGM.

Upgraded five times that I can recall, and kept these three:
Traffic
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fellowship of the Ring
Traded Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs when I heard rumors about special editions being released.

On a separate note, I am actually considering picking up the old Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan DVD since it has the theatrical cut on it. While I enjoy the 2-disc director’s edition, I think I would like to have the original cut of the film also, as that is the version that I “grew up on.”

I only keep the old version if the features on the old version can't be had on the newer version (e.g. LOTR: FOTR)
Otherwise, I usually try to get rid of the old one (e.g. X-Men & Windtalkers. I've also gotten rid of my There's Something About Mary for the upcoming SE).

It's a case-by-case basis for me. If the previous DVD has a different cut of the film, I've almost always held onto it. The one exception has been Legal Wreckin 2 since the original disc had a non-anamorphic, LD rehash transfer.
If I've upgraded to the new version for an anamorphic transfer and/or a DTS track, I'll ditch the old one. The latest example is Midnight Run.
And then there are those bizarre instances where I've been forced to hang onto the old DVD. When I got The Dead Zone SE, I discovered it was flagged for 16:9 so it won't display properly on anything other than a widescreen set. So I kept the Paramount disc just in case I ever wanna watch it on a regular TV.

Ordinarily no, but in the case of Amadeus, I had to have both of them as the newer version included scenes not in the original film and the older disc had an isolated score.

I agree with Josh-da-man. He nailed it.
I keep mine if there are 'different cuts' of a film, if one is very collectible, if one has different special features that I like (I put them in a double disc amaray), etc etc.
You know you're a DVD junky when you have 2 copies of the same movie on purpose.
