d@mn, I'm going to miss that false intro! I remember the first time I watched this disc with my brother... I had been hyping how sharp and crisp the transfer was. As the disc started to play, I said, "wtf" and he immediately responded with "you got ripped off dude!"...
... 3 seconds later... silence.

Why would the Elite NOTLD DVD go out of print?
It's not like they can lose the rights to the film, like Criterion. There's really nothing preventing them from keeping the DVD in print.

It basically boils down to this... you can buy it now for a very reasonable price, or wait until the disc simply disappears (there may not be an official OOP press release) and THEN pay a premium on eBay.

I'm confused with all the different editions out there. Is the best one the ME? And is the ME the one with the tombstone pic on the cover? It's better than the 30th Anniversary release, right?

That's really all you need to know. If you want this film, buy the ME. You won't be disappointed.
I can't stress this enough, so I'm going to shout. DO NOT BUY THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION FROM ANCHOR BAY. It is an absolute travesty, with newly-filmed footage shot and acted by hacks brutally inserted into the film. It also includes the bonus of a terrible new score and several scenes cut from the film. It sucks. It is one of the biggest film disappointments I've ever had in my life. I felt dirty having seen it. It sucks.

I received mine yesterday.... WOW! I didn't realize how many more EXTRAS are on this disc than on Elite's first one! If I had to pick just one film out of my collection that is my favorite, it would be "Night of the Living Dead".
This disc ranks right up there with Phantasm as the standard-bearers of how horror DVDs should be done.

Did some searching, and it looks like Elite's NOTLD ME is not going out of print.

I just bought a new sealed one on ebay a couple of days ago. $15.99 + 2.00 shipping. I don't mind paying 17.99 at all. As of a couple of says ago their were quite a few sellers on ebay with it for $15.99 & no bids yet. Either people don't know it's going OOP or they don't care, which is more likely the case.

so now its not going OOP!? Wouldn't that be bad if this was just one big, silly rumor? I have the original elite version, so I may just wait a little bit longer. There are just so many other titles I want, and so upgrading this title is low on my list.

I actually just "started" watching this DVD last week. I've had it for a little while now and just got around to watching it. Kind of off-topic but I have a question...
I'm certainly no film historian so I'm curious as to why this movie was done in B&W. In the late 60's color was mainstream, wasn't it? Maybe this is answered on the DVD somewhere in a commentary or something, I dunno. Was it a budgetary choice? They just couldn't afford color? Or was it a style choice? Am I off my rocker in my assumption about color?
I'm sure someone here knows. Thanks for the info!

Low budget. Night of the Living Dead was a very independent production and at that time black and white stocks and equipment were a whole lot cheaper than color.

Although, people were still using B&W for horror films into the 1960s for stylistic reasons. (Hitchcock's Psycho, some of Mario Bava's films)

Well, it looks like it ISN'T going OOP. That's good news for those who will be looking to buy it in the future. And this false alarm was good for those of us who kept putting it off.

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I never realized how low-budget this movie was. I was actually struck, when watching it, by how good and clean the movie was. It looks far better than most B&W movies I'm used to. Maybe that's because of the great job they did on this particular DVD. It's been so long since I've seen it before that I don't remember what it looked like before on TV or wherever I saw it. It almost seems like you're there.

Hmmm...there's a thought - maybe smart retailers should start rumors about titles going OOP if they aren't selling well?
