I try to avoid lending DVDs out (by being passive aggressive) but in the rare case I do, I have several old keepcases I can stick them in (ok, actually I've never lent one out, but I'm kind of stuck loaning Moulin Rouge, and that's my plan; I also think I'll just lend the movie, rather than both disks).

I never lend out any DVD's, I am way too picky about the condition of my DVD's and back when I used to lend them out people would keep the movie for months and never even watch it.

I would make sure he pays me for the DVD's otherwise I would just tell him to F*** off and not to bother calling me again since anyone who destroys my stuff and does not replace it is not a real friend.

agreed.

the worst is when a friend is like "dude, who cares...the dvd still works...its no big deal" because to them it doesnt matter. well it matters to others. they only think about what they care about and not how others think.

i hate that.

I agree!

I have a simple rule with my DVD collection. I've spent too much time and money on my collection and NONE of them leave my house. No exceptions.

(Of course, when you have a 65" WS TV home theater setup like mine, everybody wants to watch them here anyway...)

Well, you should've given him a copy of the movies instead of the original and tell him to keep it... or whenever they feel like giving it back.

"dude, who cares...the dvd still works...its no big deal"

I've heard that WAY too many times in my life. I've lend out Memento and Se7en to people only to have them come back with coffee mug rings on them. (!!!)

If a keepcase comes back in bad condition, I don't really care, since I got a ton of empty ones to replace it. But it's when I lend out snappers or cardboard cases that I get pissed off, cause the only option is to buy another one if they are ruined.

I don't know how long you've known this friend for, but I would talk to him and see how he feels about paying you back. After all, is a friendship really worth 2 DVD's?

I only lend out to friends that I know take care of their discs.

Oh, and they have to have at least 100 discs in their collection.

"You want to borrow my DVDs? Ok, but only if I can borrow your girlfriend and/or wife."

Actually, I told a guy he could borrow any DVD in my collection at any time he wanted, but only if I could borrow his absolutely gorgeous 1969 Hemi Barracuda for the same period of time.

And he wants to borrow my CC Hard Boiled so badly, I think he'll go for it.

I have nearly 300 DVD's and my wifes sisters always want to borrow one or another, they ask her and she tells them they have to ask me....... oddly they never seem to ask.

The only people I lend to have 3 kids ages 2, 4 and 6, but my DVD's are kept in an out of reach place and I would bet if one got trashed it would be replaced with my asking.

If someone said that, I'd go outside and key their car. "But the car works just fine - it's only a little scratch, after all."

This guy is an a$$hole, he gave the old "the DVD still works, who cares" line. Needless to say he's not my friend anymore. The guy is greedy and inconsiderate of others. I've always tried to be the nicest friend to him, but since he destroyed the covers of two of my favorite SE's I have (Se7en and One Flew Over The Cukoo's Nest) I'll talk to him NO MORE.

I now realize why he didn't give back the cases. He knew he destroyed them and just gave the DVDs back W/O the slipcase to see if I wouldn't notice. Idiots, idiots.

I'm not going to make him pay for it, because I KNOW he will not. I've learned a valuable lesson and also realized who a friend is, and in this case who is not.

To those who use the "Who cares, the DVD still works" line... go up to their bedroom, and in their bed. After you've done the requisite cleaning with the sheets, say "Who cares, the bed still works" and walk out.

Have you tried contacting the studios and asking if they'll send new slipcases?
