What's proper punishment?

My stupid friend borrowed two of my DVDs the other day, and both were 2 disc special edition DVDs from Warner Bros (1 was from WB, the other from New Line I think), so of course it had the cheap cardboard slipcase. A week later I go to his house to get the movies, and the first thing that made me cringe was the fact that his house was a MESS. Everything was thrown every which way. He handed me the movies and neither of them had the slipcases. He eventually found them and they were all crushed and bent up. I was SOOO pissed. I grabbed the cases and left. What do you guys think is proper punishment for this a$$hole? The DVDs themselves are fine but the cases are ruined. Now it looks ridiculous in my DVD collection because all the other cases are mint and here are two (happens to be 2 great movies , "One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest, and "Seven" Platinum), that look like they are 30 years old.

Make him listen to a Kelly Clarkson album and/or watch a Sly Stallone movie.

Nobody deserves to watch a Stallone movie. I still say burn his house down.

[Dad]Suck it up and learn from the experience[/Dad]

A friend of mine actually bought a bunch of amray cases and when he loans movies out, loans out just the disk in a generic amray. Something to consider.

replacement copies, a severe taunting, and never to be afforded the privilege of borrowing from you again.

You guys are right, I should call him on it. The bastard is not only cheap, but has no regard for anything other than his own. This is the kind of guy who treats your property like crap, and the moment his stuff is in jeopardy is goes nuts. I'm actually going to his place tonight, so I'll call him on it.

bothanspy~

That genetic amaray case idea is a good one. I'll have to do that anytime I let a friend "check out" a movie. Although now I doubt I'll let ANYONE borrow any of my DVDs.

GoldenCJ~

LOL!!! Now there's an excellent punishment. Now I just have to find me a couple horses and some CutCo knives from my kitchen.

Nice two birds with one stone.

I've never had any trouble, thankfully. I guess this is because most of my friends are obsessive/compulsive DVD geeks. However I did lend a girl I was chatting up both my "8 1/2" CC and X-Men 1.5 a couple of weeks ago, and now I'm getting nervous. Buying empty cases just for loaning is a good idea, thanks!

The standing rule that I have is that if the DVD is not in perfect condition when it is returned, they buy a new one. While the burning of a house is a good idea, I still believe it is illegal in most states.

Similar to the generic Amaray case idea ... I use CD cases. With CD cases, you don't have to worry about the DVD sliding around, in case your "friend" breaks the locking ring.

I have received so many DVDs in the mail from online retailers, where the center locking ring was busted, and thus the DVD was all scratched up and unplayable. With a CD case, you don't have to worry about that.

Actually DVD abuse can be taken into consideration for justifiable arson is 34 states. Please check your local laws, folks.

He broke them, so he bought them.

However, here is how you can soften the blow to your friend. Teach him the ways of Columbia House (see the DVD Clubs Forum for more info). Have your friend sign up for a DDKD account (get 2 free, buy 2, get 3 more free) which will average out to $7.11 per DVD if maximized properly. Insist that he use the first two enrollment selections on Cuckoo's Nest-SE and Se7en-platinum (they are both available for enrollment), then he can order whatever he wants for his fulfillments and the last three free titles. As soon as he receives the brand new copies of Cuckoo's Nest and Se7en from CH, he should give them to you, and you give him the copies that he mangled. That is a very fair deal, that will benefit both you and your friend at the same time.

First, you should never let anyone borrow anything of yours unless you're damned sure they'll treat it with the same respect you would.

That being said, you probably should have told him right then and there that this was unacceptable, and told him to buy you replacement DVDs. The messed up ones would be his now: "you break it, you buy it." Since it's been a while since this happened, it's less likely that you're going to get anything out of him now. I'd still tell him how you feel though, and let him know that he can't borrow any more of your stuff.

In one post, you've managed to gravitate to the top of both mcbg1's and Rocky_Stallone's S**t-Lists! Bravo!!

What are you complaining about? It's your fault they got screwed-up. You shouldn't have ever given them to him in the first place.

j/k of course!

What you're describing is exactly why there are only two people who will ever borrow my DVDs. To other people, I'd rather say up front, "Sorry, I don't lend my stuff out", than "You broke, so you bought it!" Why put yourself through the hassle?

PS - For those two people, I do the sdame thing as mentioned above. They get disc only.

Geez, you guys are harsh.

OK, I have no problem with the arson thing or the Braveheart-esque treatment, but c'mon, this is both cruel and unusual.

I don't even use an empty blank DVD case or a CD jewel case, I usually lend DVDs in a paper CD sleeve. But I'll think about "upgrading" to a jewel case for the added protection.

I don't know, when you start messing with genetics ethical problems might rear their heads. I've been saving my DVD's stem cells.

I have one very hard and fast rule - the disc returns to me the exact same way it left the house. Period, end of story. If my friends don't like it, blockbuster is just down the street.

What to do in your case? Get him to buy a replacement copy - from somewhere like Suncoast at full MSRP. Then he gets the old crappy copy and you get the mint virgin copy. Everyone is happy and your friend learns an expensive lesson.

Make him pay for them. If my friends are to borrow a dvd of mine, and it is not back in proper condition. Tough for them. If I can take care of them, so can they. Give me my money.
