I like documentaries as long as they add something to movie and aren't just comprised of clips and other fluff.

He rips into Armageddon quite a bit on the Criterion DVD.

"These guys are the best oil drillers in the world, eh? How do they know? What, is there a test or something?"

He's a funny guy.

Not the only ones I check out, but the ones I like the best.

A well-made documentary and trailers/TV ads are the most rewarding for what they are, usually. Commentaries are cool, but I'll only listen if it's a favorite movie, the commentator is someone I care about, or it's a film that's interesting/complex enough to get some further details.

The lamest are usually the aforementioned DVD-ROM and 'storyboards.'

I think it depends on the film. For foreign films I tend to really like having an audio commentary available, especially if the commentary includes cultural footnotes that I, as an American, may have missed in the film.

But since commentaries can be hit and miss, otherwise I lean toward deleted scenes and trailers.

Documentaries on classic films can be good, but most docs on new releases are fluff pieces not worth the disc space they eat up.

But of course what matters most to me is a good transfer in OAR.

A commentary is usually a big selling point for me.

Can't really add to what's already been said...but one feature that does tend to pop up on various SE's that i quite like are directors 'short films'.

A few that come to mind:

1941 (John Williams)

L.A. Confidential (Jerry Goldsmith)

Titus (Elliot Goldenthal)

North By Northwest (Bernard Herrman)

for a list (including titles that include a composer's commentary)
