What do you get when you mix Napoleon Dynamite, Eraserhead and the Troma school of filmmaking (acting, dialogue, production, gore, etc.) all together? You get this film.
So, you know when you wonder to yourself, "how the fuck did that film get made or greenlit?" Well, add this one to your list.
I don't really have much to add about it other than it just isn't my thing. I can see it having a decent cult following due to the acting, dialogue delivery, and just plain bizarreness of it all, but this just ain't me. After about 30 minutes, I just wanted it to end.
I will give it marks for being unique with a large amount of WTF scenes with the zany, offbeat dialogue delivery, but it just became tedious and repetitive for me. I can say that I have filled my quotient of seeing uncut oversized old man penis for the rest of my life.
I will say it was fun to see the "African" guy from Grandma's Boy again. I just rewatched that movie last month (my son had never seen it) and it was fun seeing him again. And was also surprised to see Stevie's wife's tits many times, once again. That will also last me a lifetime. I am good.
My rating: * out of ***** (the one star being for sheer wackiness)
ps. I thought it was Klaus Kinski come back to life every time the guy was in the car wash.
pps. "Bullshit Artist!!!!" Yeah, I am stealing that one.

I pretty much hated every second of this. I can’t stand Napoleon Dynamite and Troma films generally aren’t my thing. Like Spiderbite said, this is essentially a mashup of those.

Who is this movie for? It's not funny, it's not scary, and we spend way too much time looking at physically repulsive men in their underwear. Are we sure that John Waters didn't make this under a pseudonym?

I still dont understand The Greasy Strangler and Ive seen it twice now. I think expecting it to be a cheesy gross cartoon helps some; and to it's credit it wears that on it's sleeve in every synopsis and marketing piece. The gritty urban vibe is cool but the humor seems very niche. I feel like even if I 'got it' it might be too repetitive; but I think the repetition is part of the casual humor. The first murders with the grease at the vending machine had a nice dark humor. The Janet and dad subplot is cruel and interesting but trying to take anything seriously here is an exercise in frustration. GS seems artful at times but I just didnt get it.

Am I laughing because it is funny or because it’s so uncomfortable?
I apologize for inflicting this on others.
Is this this year's Ebola Syndrome?
I contemplated watching the commentary after but I just couldn't take it.

Yeah, maybe 1/10 isn’t fair, because not only did I not turn it off, but I watched the commentary too. Uncomfortable is a good one word summary of the film.
I was also thinking Napoleon Dynamite the whole time. I actually like that film though. Still enjoy being tested with stuff I’d never watch on my own, so don’t feel bad Ben, it was an experience.
I occasionally think about going back and making sure I own all our subset films over the years, but then a night like this pushes that thought out.

Ive always said Horror/Comedies and Comedies in general are the toughest genre to pull off successfully. Comedy can be so hit and miss with people. This movie was hit and miss with me as well. I thought the concept was interesting and at times I was amused (internal chuckle), but other times it was not.

I actually did a few times as well.
I was surprised that my wife came in and sat down about 10 minutes in and sat through the entire thing. She summed it up by asking if this was the Napoleon Dynamite director, and said whoever wrote this was on a lot of mushrooms in the process. This was one strange movie, but I have to admit that I bought the blu during one of the Filmrise sales. I think I liked it enough to attempt at some later point to watch the commentary, but not anytime soon.
I thought Ronnie had a really nice head-full of hair. I also wonder if any town could support a disco tour...

There was a lot wrong with this movie, but I still think Boxer's Omen gets my 'Off The Rails' award this year. So far....
I think this movie was a success, as my wife just texted me calling me a bullshit artist!

Congratulations! In all my years of doing the horror challenge, I've never bailed on a movie once I got started. Until now. Maybe I wasn't being fair only giving it 15 minutes. But it seemed those 15 minutes told me what I needed to know

Seriously it's not a good movie... but there is a redemption arch that is puzzling but might be the best part of the movie; the heart it shows in the end as a dark statement on family. If you've only watched the first 15 minutes then you've got the tone; but you really miss out on the bittersweet (and rather greasy) conclusion which feels like 'the point' of the movie.

I could actually see this being an interesting 15 or 20 minute short but an hour and a half of it will make you want to slit your wrists.

Hmm. Not sure what to think about this movie. A friend I used to hang out with was obsessed with this movie for a while. He would keep mentioning having watched it. I think it makes me wonder more about him.
This was definitely different. It felt like an adaptation of an SNL or other sketch show. "You know these wacky characters, and now you can see them in a full motion picture adventure." You can totally see how some of these scenes could be ongoing bits. It makes the movie feel more strange just being dumped in a world like that without a prior introduction.
I wouldn't say I absolutely hated it. I appreciated how surreal it was and that it was doing its own thing. That thing did start feeling really played out, though. I was ready for it to end. Fifteen minutes shorter would have made a huge difference.

Thought I would share some Google info I found:
The grease used in the film was tapioca pudding.
The original cut of the film was about 2 hours and 15 minutes long, but about 45 minutes were edited out.
