Not on Tubi until 11/1 and also not available on Hoopla (for me at least); but it is free on a couple low budget Roku channels.

While this movie has a few issues, chiefly the bad CGI blood splatter, IMO, it's one of the most faithful adaptations of a Clive Barker short story. Bradley Cooper is excellent as the hapless photographer, and nobody exudes pure menace like Vinnie Jones. I don't understand why he's named Mahogany because he doesn't look like Diana Ross. Sadly, Cooper doesn't know where he's going to: the bowels of New York City where the true City Fathers feed.

I thought this one was all right, but it did feel like a story we've seen played out a number of different times. At the very start of the movie, I wondered whether it would turn out Bradley Cooper was actually the killer all along or he would become the killer.
The bad CGI blood was pretty unforgivable. It was among the worst I've seen. I realize this movie was made when digital blood was just starting to be widely used, but the cartoonish feeling from the blood really took me out of the movie each time it came up.
Jones does cut a very menacing figure. Mahogany as his character name is certainly a choice. Fun to see Cooper in a movie like this before he hit it big, and I found it really surreal seeing Brooke Shields pop up. She has definitely made some interesting choices in roles over the years.

Gorey dark obsession come to life. I like how it also works as a political allegory. "Please step away from the meat." The moody nonsensical no holds barred introduction is the stuff more films should do - here it doesnt shy away from staring into the killer and it's great that whoever does the murdering isnt even a twist. The film suffers a little to manifest the obsession with the camera man, interjecting financial and creative motives at first. As a vegetarian myself his abrupt switch to meat feels like a missed opportunity, these touches end up too matter of fact without existential weight or hunger for something. I do like how it goes down the rabbit hole of crime minded muck for commerce versus the pursuit of pure art and happiness; when rather there is a third rogue element of consuming murder obsession. When Leon gets distracted photographing girlfriend things get juicier; you can feel the painful disconnection, a distracted impotence. Bradley Cooper may be a big shot now but here his performance seems too subdued; Leslie Bibb as his girlfriend really sells a sense of panicked decline where Bradley just seems to be acting more weird (not that explanation is always necessary but the transformation is over embellished early then suddenly he has a meathook). The willingness for gore is excellent, too many films shy away from wet but Clive Barker never disappoints. Vinnie Jones also does not disappoint, commanding presence here. MMT has an interesting story structure, it's like the 'hero's journey' but inverted into villainy with the mentor being usurped - just when it feels like there should be a happy ending rather it's a continuation of the obsession.

If you can get past the horrible cgi blood, this isn’t half bad. Coopers stupidity got a little frustrating, but not enough to ruin anything. Reminds me of Cabin In The Woods in a way.

Vinnie is just so impeccably dressed, and he cuts a mean figure swinging that hammer. I'm surprised he isn't a blood drenched mess throwing that hammer all around as he does. I would hate to see his cleaning bill!
I've never seen this movie before, and I was easily drawn in. It was interesting to see Bradley Cooper slumming it out in The Midnight Meat Train.

A violent, bloody trip into the mind of Clive Barker. A solid horror flick. You don't often get the chance to see Brook Shields and Bradley Cooper in a splatter flick.

This is so good. I saw it years ago and only remembered the gore. I'm not a fan of the gore n this, but the story captures you. I like the investigation/mystery angle and the city folklore that we finally learn about. The ending is perfect.

I had seen this before many years ago but had forgotten anything about it. Watched it with a couple of buddies and it is a fun to talk through kind of movie and not really scary in any way. The gore is pretty well done except for all the mentions of the obviously bad CG blood. You could blame it on it being in 2008 but to this day, filmmakers have not been able to make CG blood look realistic or good. I despise it when CG blood is used. Unless it is for a specific splatter effect, use real fake blood, dammit!
It is interesting seeing so many recognizable faces in such a lower budget horror movie. I thought both Bradley Cooper and the actress playing his girlfriend overdid it a lot of the times. The scene where they are just talking nonsense and screaming over each other was the icing on the cake for that. And lots of characters making stupid decisions all throughout this movie, to the point of "taking me out of the film" type decisions. And why is there a special train going every night to feed these things underground? Why are these things underground? Why are the humans still feeding them? Why do they need a killer to deliver these people? Why not just deliver the train with people right there for the creatures to eat them? Are the police covering up several disappearances a night? How is this not being detected? Why the fuck would you even get on a train that several people seem to go missing off of every night? Why? Why???
Someone mentioned above that this sticks close to Clive Barker's original story and that makes sense. I have read a lot of Barker's stuff over the years (including this story, though I remember nothing about it now) and I have always found Barker's prose to be, while imaginative, largely incoherent, nonsensical, and plodding a lot of the time. He has a lot of interesting ideas but never seems to be able to formulate them into a whole, completely thought-out working story. Shit just happens. I don't need exposition for everything, but stuff has to eventually make some semblance of sense.
Vinnie is great in this, but it is tough to watch him be silent. He has a great accent, and it is missed here.
My rating: *** out of *****
ps. "We don't know where my boyfriend is so let's break into the creepy looking dude's apartment and not go to the police."
"That's a great idea!"

One other thing I forgot, we were watching thinking how nice the subway system looked and all of us had been to NY before and knew it couldn't have been filmed there. We guessed Canada but after looking it up, it appears it was filmed at the Metro Station in LA. Wasn't that when it was pretty new there? That would explain how nice and shiny everything looked.
