Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

I forgot how amazing the Final Destination films are. The disaster porn of the over the top catastrophe, the formula breaking unusal plot/asversary, and the careful detailed sequencing of the victims is all... (chef's kiss). Somehow they even managed to connect it to the first FD film for continuity. The visual and auditory cues during the averted carastrophe and corresponding to each death feel cinematic even if there is a bit of over obvious spoon feeding. I remember thinking the premonition plot is hammy and far out but the execution makes it work.

The Final Destination series is probably my favorite horror franchise. It's creative, campy, and actually gets under my skin with a few of the setpieces. It even builds lore in a way that doesn't feel hamfisted, like later Elm Street or Halloween entries.

Yooo the lottery winner that "became rich" won $250 thousand, I'm dying. Take me back to 2003.

when someone says "Final Destination", you immediately think of the log truck. That's pretty cool that your initial thought is the sequel not the original.

and to this day I won't drive behind one of those motherfuckers because of this movie.

I hadn't seen Final Destination 2 and enjoyed it; it does a nice job of building characters amid the destruction, and all the payoffs work.. I went on to watch The Final Destination, to finish out the series, which is not quite as successful, to say the least.

Probably one of the best opening scenes in horror movie history is the huge highway crash from this film. Extremely realistic, tense and unrelenting from start to finish. The best of the franchise.
9/10

Yes, this is THE scene I always think about whenever I'm driving near a logging truck.

I sat down last yaar, and watched all these movies. I think this is my favorite one. That logging truck scene is killer and the events are the most captivating and intriguing.

I love the opening too. I'm a big fan of disaster movies, so this series is always enjoyable. Final Destination 5 has my favorite big disaster sequence--it involves a huge bridge collapse.
This is a rewatch for me. It's a solid movie - 4/5 stars. FD 3 & 4 get a little repetitive with the "how do we stop death" thing (it never works). But #1, #2 and #5 are all great. IMHO.
My review:
Pretty fun and slick horror movie. A group of people survive a horrible pile-up on the freeway when one girl has a vision/premonition and blocks the on-ramp. Soon they begin to die by crazy means. The girl goes to see the only survivor of the first movie (the airline disaster survivors who all died strangely), who has been living in an asylum. They try to come up with a plan to stop Death. Spoiler: it never works.

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

Nice to see all the love for the FD movies. I thought I was the only one.

FD movies are like Saw movies to me. They have some of the most creative and fun(?) kills but what FD has over Saw is they are not overly gory or repulsive like some of the Saw kills. These movies, to me, are more rewatchable than the Saw franchise. I just find the saw movies too gross and disgusting to watch many times over. But both the Saw and FD movies tie into each other pretty well. Much better than many more well-known franchises...and you know who I am talking about.

I haven't seen this one in a while and I don't know if it was because I was high as a kite and pretty well drunk too, but I got kinda bored with this one in the last third. I still enjoyed it, and the log truck scene still holds up. But overall, I came away a little more disappointed than I remember previously.

My rating: *** out of *****

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

I just rewatched the first 2 movies in the series. Haven't seen them since they were new ... damn, that's 20+ years now The movies just flew by (really appreciate a tight ~90 minute running time). Maybe the formula got old in later installments, but for now there's just so much tension (in both the opening accidents and the build up to each death).

Did you see how the guy lived? $1000 is probably "life changing" money for that loser

I don't know if it began with this movie, but I absolutely won't drive anywhere near those logging trucks. Or trucks carrying all those long pipes. I'm sure the cargo is more secure than it looks. But do I trust it enough to drive behind them? No way!

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

Watched this with my daughter last night. I hadn't seen it in many years. She had only seen the first one, so it was new to her. I felt pretty much the same about it as I saw it when it was new. The opening with the logging truck is still great. The creative kills are great, with the barb wire fence being a standout.

Still, I felt more connected to the characters in the first film than I do in this one. It may just be the quality of the actors or it may be the fact that the concept was newer, but if I had to watch just one of them, I would still choose the original. My daughter expressed similar thoughts without me prompting her. We also don't get how killing the main girl and bringing her back to life was somehow "Introducing new life" which would mean that they (possibly) beat death. Wouldn't that just be another way of cheating death, and right back on the list she goes? In any case, it's still a fun ride, and we had a good time watching it.

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

This was on AMC last night, coincidentally enough. It's pretty interesting which deaths they cut out. The highway crash is more or less left intact, including the cop's head being Gallagher'd by the log. But they went to commercial when the fire escape hits the first dude's eye. They cut to the mom when the kid gets pancaked, but synced the audio of that on top of her reaction. I remembered the mom's death in the elevator being gorier, but can't remember for certain. TV went out in the hotel shortly after that, but man that highway crash is easily one of the best sequences ever put in horror.

Ended up binging all (?) five of the FD films. Despite them being so samesy, enjoy them all. If this was still the days of only cable these would be the type of films that I’d always stop on when clicking channels. Not great, just fun mindless entertainment.

Did the same and man the last few were hard to watch. I love the kills and they have some iconic scenes, but the acting is just bad. Def got in my head about the whole what if and time. I can def watch the kills over and over again, but cannot actual watch the movies.

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

I wanted to wait to comment on this until I went through the whole series. I watched the first two earlier in the month and then did 3-5 today. I like the series. It's like a slasher film without an actual slasher. I personally think any complaints about acting or characterization when it comes to this series is silly. It's just about watching pretty people die in creatively gruesome ways. Is there some bad acting? Sure. But the actors are not exactly being asked to do too much either. If they're lucky, they're either given a broad enough stereotype or a creative enough death to be memorable. It's just filler between the kills.

I was surprised to learn I hadn't seen 3 before. If forced to rank the series, I would probably put the first or second at the top. If you asked me which I have the most fun with and rewatch the most, it would definitely be 4 or 5 because they're both in 3D, and these films are made for 3D. I know some really don't like 3D, but these films are great examples of what that extra dimension can do when used right.

But getting back to 2, the opening is certainly iconic. I think even some people who haven't seen the film get nervous when driving in certain situations because of this one.

Re: "Final Destination 2" Reviews/Discussion - 2023 Horror Challenge

You got me curious, so I looked up how I rated them on the IMDB and I ranked them all 6 out of 10. So, I have no idea what order I would put them in.
