HDR in the player settings stays on auto, always. Do not change it regardless of what the disc says. Only turn DV on or off depending on the disc. If after a couple of weeks you find that most of the time (like me) the discs are DV just leave it on and only turn DV off if you need too.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

so, most of my discs say HDR only. one i looked at says Dolby Vision HDR...what is that and what settings do i do with that? for that i assume keep HDR as auto and DV goes on? and what about streaming 4K movies, what do you do then? and what if a disc like (Se7en) doesn't say at all? and then what if it just says HDR10 or DV HDR10? thanks for all.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

Over in your post earlier in the last purchased:

https://forum.dvdtalk.com/hd-talk/57...l#post14695259

I can count easily 20-25+ of those have DV without even looking them up. The total is probably quite a bit higher.

It took me 10 seconds to look up on the other site that Se7en is HDR10 (no DV). I know you dismissed it as cumbersome but looking them up on the other site is the fastest way to find out.

If the disc or other site says DV turn it on in the player. If it only says HDR/HDR10/HDR10+ then turn DV off in the player.

The player has no bearing on streaming content. Your TV should automatically pick up and play the best format including DV.

Video
Codec: HEVC / H.265 (55.63 Mbps)
Resolution: Native 4K (2160p)
HDR: Dolby Vision, HDR10

what settings do you do with that? this is for the Tron (original) disc.

Technically you have a choice. You can watch it in either Dolby Vision or HDR10. My personal preference is always DV given the option. For Tron, if you turn DV on you'll get the DV version. If you turn it off you'll get the HDR10 version.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

Don't go by what's printed on the back cover of a release. Sometimes they leave off the Dolby Vision tag. The other site has a stickied thread "List of UHDs that contain Dolby Vision" but I don't think it's been updated lately.

There are a handful of SDR UHD’s. The Dollars Trilogy from Kino for example. I think Criterion’s Night Of The Living Dead also doesn’t have it.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

So, I’m watching The Greatest Showman (amazing a/v for sure) and I saw on the other site. It said HDR10. In that case I shut DV off, correct? What happens if it’s on when not supposed to be?

Basically your player/display in that scenario "upscales" the HDR to fake Dolby Vision. May skew colors a bit in the tone mapping. Not ideal but not a massive deal, either.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

And why do authored 3D Blu-ray’s play beautifully in 2D on my player? That’s strange no? I just tried it out bc my player had some 3D options which I didn’t understand. But I popped one in and it liked so good, but it’s a 3D only disc. Does that make sense?

What Phantom said, but also I notice blown out whites. I can usually tell when there are white credits on a black background. The white has a lot of “noise” for lack of a better word.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

How come Sony didn't get it right in the first place (having to manually turn DV on/off)? My speculations are that they have old tech engineers.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

And what about this 3D thing? How could it be downscaled to 2D and play fine?

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

It's the other way around. The 3D is an extension of the 2D data. The 2D stuff is still there.

The Sony players are all old and I don't think they were originally designed to work with Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision compatibility was added via firmware updates and I believe having it be a manual option was the best they could do.

I said this before, but it would be nice if one of these companies would design a new model of player that fixed all of the little problems with the older models now that the tech is fully matured.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.

I’m getting really fed up with this Sony player. Yesterday it freaked out during the Thing & the Shining and today it’s the Taking Of Pelham 123. All UHD’s of course and all smudge and scratch free.

Unless you have something plugged into the digital out jack in the back, it is irrelevant to you. It supplies the audio signal to a non HDMI receiver.

I think my order is a couple days away. According to Shop app, it was last seen in San Bernardino, CA. Conversely, I have some movies in my Amazon cart that could show up in a few hours.
