The 4K newbie thread.
I thought this might be a cool idea for newbies in the 4K UHD realm. And, a place to get some questions and answers. I’m watching my first 4K now and it’s absolutely stunning. The details. You can see pores on faces! Unbelievable!
So, how do I know what to set up with all the new hardware? Is there a newbie guide out there? I must say it’s truly glorious. My first personal experience and it’s wow! |
Re: The 4K newbie thread.
I heard Bang & Olufsen make incredible 4K TVs. ;)

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
Why in my settings would HDR be greyed out so I can’t click on it to use it? Do I want HDR? I suppose so but I can’t click on it in settings menu.
|
Re: The 4K newbie thread.
^ I guess regular cable would have HDR greyed out since it doesn’t emit that signal. I’ll try when I put a 4K Blu-ray in the machine and then go to picture settings and hopefully it’s full functioning.

Settings wise I haven’t tinkered around much. I found some decent presets online for my Sony tv when I got it. There’s also a weird resolution/FPS/hdr problem with Sony TVs and PS5’s that I’m sure the internet can explain better than I can. As I’m sure you’ll discover there are some really great discs out there and a bunch of horrible ones. American Graffiti is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. True Lies has some very questionable parts as does Aliens, but I own them both. Oh and if whites are really blown out and a bit noisy/grainy, it’s because Dolby Vision is turned on when it shouldn’t be. |
Re: The 4K newbie thread.
What site did you go to for settings on player or tv? I haven’t used it but once as the day after I got it I went to my dad’s for Xmas and won’t be able to tinker with it until Tuesday. I really don’t know squat about all the settings and stuff. Haven’t even had time to look at player instructions. When it freezes, what do you do to unfreeze it? And thanks for the reply Todd.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
So just leave it on DV on the player and not worry about HDR? Do I tinker with tv settings at all? Thanks for the assist Mh.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
^ that seems inconvenient checking online and stuff if it’s not on the artwork on back of 4K.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
So do I keep switching from DV to HDR and stuff depending on how the disc is authored?

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
Thanks Mh. Stupid it wouldn’t recognize it automatically, the way my player accepts different sound, DTS/Atmos, etc…

Glad to be rid of it when I switch to a Panasonic this upcoming year. |

Panasonic player or tv?
I have the Sony but it doesn't seem to skip as much as others report. I guess I got lucky. I have briefly thought of getting a Panny 420 but it's around $400. |
Re: The 4K newbie thread.
Why do Sony players have an issue and what usually indicates there is an issue? I just always liked and bought Sony products. I didn’t have an issue when I played Shaun of the Dead. It looked so vivid and sharp with no issues. When I get back home Tuesday, I’ll have a chance to play with it more.

Re: The 4K newbie thread.
Do I have to change any settings on my 3 gaming consoles?
|
Re: The 4K newbie thread.
Panasonic player for sure and I’m considering upgrading to a Panasonic OLED.
Like I mentioned earlier the main issue with the Sony player is the freezing. Sometimes skipping the scene works, but more often than not you need to eject the disc. I have no complaints about the picture quality though. When the player fucks up, you’ll definitely know. Not sure about your other systems, but you might have to tinker with the PS5 to get it to display in 4k HDR. If it’s hooked up, turn it on, switch to that input and press the display button on your tv remote. It should say what resolution it’s in. |
