Yes you might be right. The one thing I would mention to is if memory serves me right the 606 uses Audyssey and the 663 doesn't. I like Audyssey but I have never tried what the 663 uses,so I can't give you my opinion on that.
In my personal opinion I think most people would be fine with a current AVR and would only go with pre/pro if you were big(fussy) with music. I just recently added an EMO amp to my 3808,so just take it for what it's worth.

Your 3808 is a beast. It weighs in around 40lbs. It competes with the Yamaha 1900/3900 ($45lbs+) and Onkyo 876 series receivers (50lbs) (higher end of line). The Denon 1909, Yamaha 663/763, and Onkyo 606/706/806 are all competing receivers (lower end of line).

The guts in the higher end are much in the higher end and will be able to drive more speakers. But they are overkill now.

The lower end is fine for what he has but at least the Yamaha allows him to add amps. With your receiver there were many more speakers you could drive effectively than with those lower end.

I have the Pioneer 91txh Had it for about a year. Absolutely kick ass. 99% of my play is home theater, but just that I noticed a distinct improvement over the Yamaha I had been using.
