I think what Josh means is - 4:3 cubed (4x4=16 & 3x3=9) ... hence 16:9 = 4:3 cubed

Even this explanation doesn't make any sense. If anything 16:9 = 4:3 squared.

Folks have yet to upgraqde all of their existing 4x3 sets for
16:9 (1.85:1) sets.
Of course, 16:9 does not equal 1.85:1. While obviously similar, they are entirely different established ARs. In fact I maintain a Panavision framing leader specifically for 1.85:1 extraction from a 1.78:1 HD frame.

Current common ARs:
1.33:1 TV
1.37:1 35mm theatrical
1.66:1 35mm theatrical
1.78:1 TV
1.85:1 35mm theatrical
2.39:1 35mm theatrical

Isn't squared and cubed the same thing? If not, I was just going for the basic concept.

To milo bloom:
For the love of god, you are a complete stupid a_ss.

What does a mismatch in aspect ratio has to do with price? $4,000 or $40, the undesired effect still exist. I bet you are the type of idiot that enjoys 1/3 of your gas tank leaking every time you fill it up. Your are the type of duffus that tosses away good milk a week before expiration date before ever attempting to see if its expired because such a waste "does not bother you". Well to hell with you. Next time just pour out 1/3 the moment you buy it so that it will not expire

"I just hope you don't refuse to watch any good movies just because they're 1.33 or 2.35."
You put your hopes on what other chose to watch! I pinpointed the source of you stupidity. You work in the film industry!! Even an goldfish brained fool like you should know that the aspect ratio does not have 1 iota of what is determined as a good movie. Most of Blue-Ray and HD DVD disk are being pushed to 2.4:1 regardless of original year or popularity of movie.

Even your name, fake or not, says your brain is the size of a mustard seed. Its the idiots like you that think putting the world film next to something makes it ok. "Ohh snaps, I go shot in the leg. How about I put film next to my wound. Yep that will make it all better."

To the O.P. DarthMarklar:
This type of question is increasing in the forums and righteously so. The lead-lag nature between home DVD viewing to original filming is contributed to many things. Yet, regardless of the many, there will be no synchonization because in the end it is all about the bottom line. To do whatever inconsiderate and disrespectful act is the fuel of big business. Yes, 2.35-2.40:1 tv will and are starting to be produced. As if it mattered because the aspect ration will again change. If in my job, I exhibited just 1/2 the incompetence and apathy like that of the film industry, I would be fired day one or promoted to management. Not just in respect to the deliberate alienation of its money pool but also its continually degraded films.

If you remove "idiot" and "duffus", and the goldfish brain and the mustard seed brain size, you won't get a mod warning.

Wow, I'm not sure what Anothercoilgun was trying to say, but it sounds like he's complaining that the aspect ratio doesn't fit the television screens. Imagine that, it's as if they were making their movies for the theaters rather than televisions.

Anyway, there's a comment about them pushing 2.35:1 on HD DVD/BD. This is not true. What's happening is that due to the young male demographics and heavy influence of game consoles, they're releasing more action, sci-fi, fantasy, and/or comic book movies that tend to be 2.35:1 more often than not. Day and date titles have been from all genres, but when it comes to catalog titles, fewer comedies, dramas, and low budget films (which tend to lean more towards 1.85:1) have been released. This has skewed the number of 2.35:1 titles higher, but it doesn't have anything to do with them pushing the ratio for HDTV.

Wait, grey bars? Aren't they usually, you know, black?

I once changed my sister's boyfriend's widescreen television to display 4x3 material properly. He insisted me to change it back.

*sigh* Oh well, at least I've managed to hammer it into the heads of my parents...too bad the television is too stupid to do it automatically

He wrote that in 2002, when burn-in was a bigger problem. Didn't some models only have grey bars then?
